I’d never been to Adelaide before. Never. And I was excited about visiting. I realised, as I flew out of Brisbane, that I’ve flown up and down the East Coast so many times, but never departed across the middle part of Australia {well, not the middle, but not the coast… you know what I mean?}. Anyways, I want to tell you what happened at the airport, because believe me, you will not believe what happened.
I’ve flown so much in the past few months, that I’ve gained myself lounge access. I actually didn’t know I had until a man pointed it out to me, and I had an awkward conversation at the lounge desk asking if I was allowed in, which I was. Yeehaw. So I was sitting eating my free toast and drinking my free wine when I looked up and saw FALSE TEETH on the ground. Not just one random tooth, but a whole set of teeth, shiny and glistening… laying on the carpet.
How someone just misplaces their teeth, I’ll never know. But a lady just strolled up, PICKED THEM UP {with her bare hands, no less} and handed them into reception. One minute later an announcement came over, “If you’ve misplaced your dental kit, please see the front desk.”
In the twenty minutes I was there no one went up to claim them. Is that not the most hilarious and slightly odd thing you’ve ever heard?
Eventually I arrived in Adelaide and at my hotel, which I’d randomly picked on the Internet. How awesome that it was situated straight across from the Haighs chocolate shop? Fate, I tell you. Somehow I ended up picking up $80 worth of chocolate that I didn’t really need, but yum. Sorry hips.
The reason for my trip was to host another of our mama + kid photography workshops. We’ve done them in Sydney, the Gold Coast and Melbourne… and Adelaide was having it’s turn. We headed up into the hills to Patch Kitchen and Garden.
Adelaide, I need to make mention of your beautiful tree-lined streets and lack of hilly land. I’m very impressed. So clean and pretty. I need to see more. Please.
Everyone arrived, and we sat down to a quick welcome from Kristie from Olympus, and a quick lesson from Rachel of Sesame Ellis… and then it was time to play.
It was towards the end of the workshop that one of the kids approached me to tell me something rather important. “You know,” she started, “before today I didn’t really get photography. My mum always has a camera and wants to take photos of me, and I used to just get frustrated and annoyed, but now I get it. After playing with the cameras today, I’m so excited too. I love taking photos. I feel so inspired and excited. I can see why my mum loves it so much.”
I wanted to cry. It was as if I could see a new passion being born inside her right in front of me.
I’ve had an update since, and she’s still excited about photography, snapping away and having fun. Isn’t that the best thing ever?
I feel like a few of the kids, particularly those in the 8-11 year old bracket have really started something beautiful within them. I love it.
Here are some photos from the mums and kids who attended:
Thanks to everyone who attended, it was so lovely to meet everyone. So lovely. And thanks to Adelaide for showing off with some pretty amazing weather.
Perth, you’re up next. Stay tuned for a post tomorrow with your chance to attend one of our lunches!
Have you been to Adelaide? Did you love it as much as I did?
I’m an ambassador for Olympus. You can read about our relationship here.
I hope you come back real soon X
I have a picture in my head of some toothless person wandering around Adelaide having to drink their meals through a straw…
..Hi Chantelle… What a great workshop you all had… I love passing on skills and ideas to other people… it’s the best part of art and craft….
The false teeth incident is quite weird..
I love Adelaide.. xxx
Have a great day … Hugs… Barb xxx
so glad you enjoyed our beautiful city, I was a wee bit bummed that my son and I didn’t get a spot at the workshop but dems the breaks!! Great choice of hotel, Haighs are simply the best! Next time you come to Adelaide you should venture a little further south to explore the fleurieu peninsula, its divine 🙂
Oh yay, I’m so glad you had a rad time in Adelaide! Next time, we totally need to hang out and I’ll show you a few more cool spots. x
I think you didn’t only instill a fresh passion in that child, but you also made a totally new connection between a mother and her kid. That precious moment we suddenly understand why our parents do certain things. For me that came when my mother insisted that, instead of doing voluntary work with elderly people, I would come with her to visit her mother each week and have a chat with her and go from there… while she did some household jobs in her mother’s home, preparing food, collect laundry, I had no other job than talk with my gran. And I did. It’s thanks to my mother I finally understood what a wonderful woman my grandmother was and why my mother thought it was so important to spend time with her. In the next ten years, I’ve had the chance to hear her stories, to feel her love, and made her into more than someone I just took for granted as a teenager. She passed away a few years ago, right after my son was born, but I’m so thankful I got to understand the importance of family and grandparents, thanks to my mother.
I think your workshop did the same: make some children really understand their parents, a little shift in perspective and whether they will go on with it or not, it’s something they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
I LOVE how inspiring you are. So beautiful to see a passion for photography awakened in someone who previously didn’t get it! Thank you for making that happen. 🙂
Adelaide is just gorgeous! I used to go there a lot for work and loved to explore all the great bars and restaurants…so much great food! As for Haighs, if you didn’t try the champagne truffles you MUST add it to your to-do list…they are life changing!!!
So happy to hear you enjoyed rads. My uni town. Many happy memories and I absolutely love visiting. So many amazing places and restaurants… and of course Haighs!
We had such a great day, thanks for all the inspiration!!! 🙂
