What $396 at Costco looks like (plus what I almost bought but didn’t)

I don’t know about you, but I love seeing what other people buy at Costco Australia. So here’s a peek into our latest haul. We planned to spend $300, but… well, Costco had other plans. Here’s what we came home with, what we almost bought, and how we actually use the things we stock up on.

I got lots of insider tips from the FMS community on Facebook, if you’re not already over there chatting with us – join us!

A few things to know about how we shop Costco Australia

  • We visit 4–5 times a year and stock up on what we know we’ll use.
  • Despite appearances, we’re not huge eaters.
  • Most dinners are steak and salad, with the occasional fries or smashed potatoes.
  • I don’t buy raw chicken from Costco. Every time I have, it’s been off. I’m weird about chicken to begin with, so I’d rather not risk it.
  • I do love the BBQ chickens though. If I’m organised enough to shred the meat and make a curry the same day, they’re a great buy.
  • I don’t buy fruit and veg here. The portions are just too big for us and I hate wasting food. I stick to Woolies or the farmers market for that.

Garlic and Chive Cream Cheese Rolls ($11.99)
I usually steer clear of the bakery section, but I’m making lots of soups at the moment and thought these would be perfect alongside. I’ll bag them into portions, freeze them, and reheat in the air fryer. Never tried them before!

Prawn Tempura Tacos ($34.64)
This is our easy dinner when we do a Costco shop. We love them. The kit lasts us two nights and feels like a bit of a treat.

Garlic Butter Prawns ($24.99)
This was an impulse buy. The prawns aren’t Aussie, which gave me pause, but we’ll see how they taste.

1kg Grass-Fed Salted Butter ($9.99)
Everyone raves about this butter, so it was definitely a must-buy this time.

Harvest Fields Granola ($14.99)
Shane’s go-to brekky for work. He has it with Greek yoghurt and it keeps him going.

Maggi Rich Gravy Mix ($12.99)
A staple. Enough said.

Australian Beef Flank ($43.38)
Shane will cut this up and portion it into steaks for easy dinners. We usually share 1–2 steaks between the four of us.

2kg Beef Mince Portions ($18.99)
These come individually wrapped and are great for easy dinners. Think spag bol, chow mein, tacos, etc.

Soup Dumplings ($16.99)
Lulu loves these. Actually, we all do. Easy lunch or dinner.

Pork Belly ($23.03)
We’ll cut this into two, or into smaller pork belly bites and freeze them.

Kewpie Mayo ($10.99)
I swear my kids drink this stuff.

Spinach and Three Cheese Ravioli, 2-pack ($11.99)
This is our quick dinner. One pack feeds three of us (Lulu makes her own – she’s not big on cheese). I usually make a lemon butter sauce. They freeze well.

Tomato Sauce ($7.99)
Standard.

Beef Rump Cap ($60.60)
We cut this into steaks, vacuum seal, and freeze. Most of our dinners are protein and salad.

American Cheese Slices ($24.99)
Look away. Ain’t nothing healthy about this. But it’s joy.

Porcini Mushroom Sauce ($14.99)
Mushrooms are my VERY MOST favourite food. I’m hoping this will be perfect with steak. Will report back.

Spanakopita Dip ($7.99)
No idea what to expect. A bunch of you said it was good. I’ll have it for lunches with little picky plates of goodies.

Chicken Enchiladas ($18.98)
Shane will portion and freeze these for night shifts.

Listerine, 3-pack ($25.99)
Fresh breath, baby.

And what we didn’t buy…

Whipped Fetta – Only skipped because I still have some at home from Rebel. We love it with lamb wraps.

Queso Fresco – I was thinking Mexican corn salad but the use-by date was too close. Next time.

Churros Party Pack – Locally made and looked great, but I resisted.

Toum Garlic Sauce – So many of you recommended it, but that tub is massive. Would we use it all?

Island Way Sorbet – Love these so much. Still have some in the freezer though.

Croquette Party Pack – Who doesn’t love a croquette? Just needed a party to justify them.

Mary’s Gone Crackers – I regret not getting these. Has anyone tried them?

Beef Stroganoff – Looked good but could it beat my homemade version?

Lamb Pack – Loved the look of it, but it was out of our budget this trip.

Pad Thai Frozen Meals – Might be perfect for Shane’s night shifts. Anyone tried them?

Cinnamon Scrolls with Cream Cheese Icing – So many people had these in their trolleys. But we resisted.

Also, this is how we pack our groceries for the drive home:

  • A big esky with ice packs
  • A boot organiser (this one’s from Amazon but I think Kmart has them too)
  • The organiser velcros to the boot so things don’t slide around

Costco really is a bit of a trap, but if we stick to what we know and love, it’s worth it for the quality and price.

What’s your go-to Costco buy? And what always tempts you even if you don’t need it?
