Perth, we’re coming for you!

I know the photography workshops that I’ve been hosting aren’t about me, and are more about the mums and kids that we’ve been hosting. I know it absolutely doesn’t matter that Perth is at the top of my travel bucketlist, and that’s more important that the kids and parents have the time of their lives… but it is OK that I’m moderately {super!} thrilled to be making my way to Perth next month, right?

Because I’m very, very excited.

I’m excited about seeing the sun set over the water. I’ve seen it in other countries, but I want to see it happen here in Australia. There will be photos.

So I scoured, and searched, and found the perfect spot for our Perth Olympus Passing The Passion On Photography Workshop, and the perfect place? It’s the newly opened The Shorehouse in Cottesloe.

The Shorehouse

So if you’re in the Perth area and you like photography, and you have a child that you’d love to share the passion of photography with, I’d love for you to join us.

Here’s a little bit about how it works: We have 30 seats at our table; 15 mamas and 15 kids. Rachel from Sesame Ellis teaches us a little bit about photography, Olympus supplies the cameras, I supply the toys and goodies, and we head out and take lots of lovely photos. You get to have one-on-one time with your child, to eat yummy food, meet new friends and be creative. One lucky child will go home with a camera to keep!

When: Saturday November 14th

Time: 12 noon til 3pm

Where: The Shorehouse, Cottesloe

If you want to attend, simply leave a comment below answering the following question: What’s your favourite thing to do with your child/ren? Why?

Competition closes November 4th at 12noon. Winners will need to make their way to the lunch themselves. Winners will be notified by email.

I’m an ambassador for Olympus. You can read about our relationship here.

  1. My favourite thing to do with my children is just to simply get out of the house and explore what’s around us in this beautiful state we now call home. My son has dyspraxia (which is a neurological disorder in which messages from the brain are not interpreted by the body correctly resulting in difficulty with speech, movement and/or coordination.) and most of the time he just wants to be at home where it’s familiar and with his toys so I like to get him out as much as possible and trying new things.

  2. My favourite thing to do is play board games with my son. Encourage his strategic thinking whilst laughing and having fun.

  3. Similar to Kim…. I love to explore with my kids. It’s the simple things. Parks. Beaches. Bushland. Camping. Gardens. Anything! And with the warmer weather coming…. I love this time of year in Perth!
Unfortunately I don’t seem to be taking as many pictures lately, but I’m really keen to change that as I feel my kidlets are just getting bigger before my eyes 🙂

  4. Very strangely for me, I actually love kicking the footy with my son. I’ve never been able to kick a footy straight until my son taught me last year. I love that little proud look on his face when he watches me do it 🙂

  5. Given the choice, my 4yo always suggests we go to Hillarys Boat Harbour. It is close to home and with plenty of places to eat and play it is our favourite place to hang out, explore, take photos, eat, play, swim, feel the sand beneath our toes and of course watch those perfect sunsets. My husband and I first met there and we even got married there. It holds special meaning for our family so we always oblige our daughter’s request to go there…although for her I think it is more about the ice cream!!

  6. We love exploring our backyard. My son will stay out there all day long if I’d let him. It’s like a whole new world out there each new day. When we’re inside I love reading him books- his facial expressions are absolutely priceless ?

  7. Hi Chantelle, I would love to attend a workshop and learn more about my newly acquired Olympus camera, however I don’t have any little ones. Will you be doing a/any workshops in Perth that might suit me? Cheers Bec

  8. Oh my gosh, I’ve been dying for this news…. It would be such an honore to meet you and other like minded mums and their kiddies. My favorite thing to do with the kids is be creative in all its different forms. Kids choice of what they want from baking a cake to drawing with side walk chalk on the pavement. I love it because being creative is a personal thing and its never wrong, it’s expressive and its all yours. Your free to create and use your imagination 🙂

  9. We’re so spoilt in WA with endless amazing beaches, parks and playgrounds which I love to explore with my kids. One of my favorite things to do though, is to have the odd day where we have no plans whatsoever and just stay home. Getting dressed is optional. Toys absolutely everywhere is a certainty. But whether we’re baking a cake together, digging in the the vegetable garden or making a ‘toy city’, it’s in these unremarkable times I have these moments with my kids that I know I’ll always remember.

  10. My favourite thing to do with my eleven yr old daughter is scrapbooking and crafting!! We have developed such a close relationship through spending time together doing something we both absolutely love. She is such a good memory keeper of her life at this age and only recently told me how much she wants to learn how to take great photos to add to her scrapbooks 🙂 She would LOVE to be chosen to participate in this workshop with me!!!

  11. My children are all quite creatively minded so my favourite things to do with them are anything that is arty or crafty 🙂

  12. Hi Chantelle,
It would be totally awesome to come to this event. I love my Olympus camera and learning how to use it. I gave Gracie my old camera recently and its interesting watching her take photo’s and set things up. What is my favourite thing to do with my children… we just came back from a mini family holiday. We have done it a few times now, we just head off and stay in different towns in the south west. No fixed plans and just relax and have fun together. Gracie loves staying in different places and discovering new things. Banjo had his first experience and from all the sleeping he did, I think he enjoyed it too!

  13. If you asked my children, they’d tell you their favourite thing to do with me was going to playcentres. They love playcentres, with their contagious diseases and pee-soaked ballpits. I don’t share their enthusiasm, on account of the contagious diseases and pee-soaked ballpits. I love hanging out at the beach with my kids, using an empty coffee cup as a bucket and a thong as a spade (I always – ALWAYS – forget the real bucket and spade. And the suncream.) I love watching them jump the waves, and get soaked, and dig holes, and cover their siblings in sand. (I don’t love cleaning the car afterwards, but what can you do?)

  14. As simple as it may sound I love playing outdoors with my daughter, whether it’s playing on the swings at the playground or building sandcastles at the beach. I like to get down to play with her at her level and try to see the world from her perspective. The joy I see in her eyes and hear in her laughter when we are playing makes everyday a good day ??

  15. My favorite thing to do with my first boy is an activity that combines both our hobbies, photography for me and playing for him. The absolute best place for this would be going to the beach and running away from the waves that hit the shore. I always take a little time to snap my first son in his element but most of rest playing with him.
Second boy is only three months at the moment, but he gets to join in a little too when he is in the ring sling.

  16. Well after the last 10 days of bliss here in Queensland, I gotta say my fave thing to do with Ollie is go on holiday! See new things, seek out new adventures, and take each day as it comes. If I could do that everyday, it would be awesome! Back home, we love to cook together {pizza and cake generally}, read together and are out a lot living and loving our city. Ollie’s at an age now where he is interested in learning pretty much everything so teaching him is a joy. I also like to take him to coloured walls and shoot him against them, coz mumma’s gotta have her fun right!?

  17. Favourite things…living in the moment, trying to see things like they do. Laughing, especially at ‘farty bums’! Making memories, even with the little things. Acting like a kid. Morning tea (baby)cino’s on the floor with squishy marshmallows and milk froth moustaches. Hearing my son start sentences with “When I was 3…”…which was only about 6 months ago. Getting excited when the postman comes. And waving hello to the garbage truck man, in our PJs. Reading a ‘Spot’ book to my daughter for the 50000th time. Watching a movie for the 50000th time but acting like it was the first time we’d ever seen it. Taking a photo of the snail on our driveway and the 4yo dude & 2yo lady baby checking to see if I took a good one…I could go on and on but coming to this event would be beyond cool!

  18. Firstly can I say that I’m sooooo excited that you are coming to Perth Chantelle! My daughter and I love to go to the park, beach and cafés, and she loves to help me cook. I’ve always got my phone ready to capture those sweet moments ( I have a DSLR but I need to practise with it more). Isla is at an age now where she’s really into learning so her eyes are always wide open, and she’s always asking ” what’s that” , ” why?” etc etc . It’s a real joy watching her grow and it reminds me everyday what a privilege it is to be a mama ( even on those hard days).

  20. Our most favorite thing to do is head out looking for anything, honestly anything to take photo’s of! My daughter has had her own camera for a few years now and absolutely loves taking pictures of pretty much anything but in particular nature and our dog Daisy! We always have a great time scouting for places to take photos and I know she would just love to learn how to improve her blossoming photography skills!

  21. Love going to the beach with my two daughters. They are at that age where it’s all about building sand castles and chasing waves. Loving the sunshine life in Perth at the moment. It’s going to be a fun filled Summer xo
(Can I bring my two daughters with me, one is 4 and the other is 3. The 3 year old will happily sit on my lap).

  22. I love to get them out and about on an outdoors adventure because they love to explore (particularly in nature because after winter we are sick of being indoors most of the time).

  23. My favourite thing to do with my 8 & 6 year olds is just to be In The Moment. Whether it’s playing a game, cuddles on the couch, walking to school, or folding laundry together, if I’m Present, these mundane things are our favourite times together. And, I bet you if I asked them for their favourite thing to do with their mummy, they’d say the same thing.

  24. My favourite thing to do with my girls is see them have fun and explore the beautiful Rottnest, Parker Point, where I spent my childhood, playing, swimming, driving boats, making castles and feeding the Quokkas. It’s my most favourite place in the world!! Thanks for the opportunity! x

  25. Hi Chantelle, I love to adventure with my kids. We enjoy experiencing new things together and learning about all the weird and wonderful opportunities to have fun! I love to surprise the kids and always love to laugh. Would love to come meet you and have photo adventures!

  26. My daughter and I love to travel together. We like to eat local foods, see the sights, relax by pools and shop together, capturing all the highlights by taking plenty of photos!

  27. Oh cool. My youngest and I just love to go to the beach together, when we can, not that we can so much these days, since we’ve moved away not closer. 😉

  28. My favourite thing is just be be in our backyard or to grab a takeaway coffee and head to the park with my little girl. I love that she’s helping to to see how amazing the world is all over again through her eyes. We collect leaves, or get right down and look at the flowers. We spot butterflies. She has sharp little eyes! I love watching the fascination on her face as she follows a butterfly or bee with her eyes, gently examines a flower, a blade of grass, a stone. Just being there in those little moments, I treasure each one. <3

  29. What an exciting opportunity! My favourite thing to do with my kids is go exploring and to “put ourselves in the way of beauty”. This is both soul restoring and of course a great opportunity to take photos! (We also love going out for ice-cream, playing Pass the Pigs and planning our next adventure….)

  30. How exciting that you’re coming to Perth, Chantelle! Your Photo-a-day-challenge actually led me to Instagram many years ago and it’s been so much fun! I’ve always enjoyed doing arts and craft with my kids and baking because let’s face it, it’s just so much fun and at the end you have something unique to hang up or to gift and something yummy to eat! 😉 I’d like to bring my middle daughter who just turned 10 because she always asks to take ‘a’ photo on my phone of something and then later I discover 10/20 different shots of the same thing, hahaha! It would be so cool to see what she would do with a real camera and it’d be so nice to hang out with just her!

  31. My favourite thing to do with my daughter, is just BE. It doesn’t really matter what we are doing, as long as we are together. It has been just the two of us since she was born, and we have had to work extremely hard on our relationship as there have been many challenges along the way. But im comfortable in the knowledge that just being in her presence makes me a better person x

  32. My favourite thing to do with my daughter is sitting down for breakfast. She’s two and a half so it’s the best time when we’re at eye level during the day and it’s just the two of us. The conversations are getting pretty detailed and her attempts to make me laugh are hilarious.

  33. Hi Chantelle! My all time favourite thing to do with my kids is cook! Food is a big part of our lives – from growing it in the garden, to making good choices at the supermarket, to finding a recipe, actually cooking it and then the best bit- eating it with the family around the dining table. Having them involved on a daily basis in the kitchen means that they know so much about preparing food, are always keen to help out and try new things. My little (and not so little) sous chefs take the chore out of cooking for me and I hope they always enjoy cooking and creating with me in the kitchen as much as I love having their company.

  34. Cool! Cannot believe you’re coming to our beautiful Perth! My favourite thing to do with my kids is spend one on one time with them. It makes them feel special plus I can actually listen to them without the interuption’s of 2 other kids 🙂 . Winning this prize would be a perfect date with my 8 year old girl. She is the proud owner of our old camera, whilst I am still trying to get my head around using our Olympus E-M5.

  35. My favourite thing to do with my eldest daughter is cooking – we both love it (Tilly especially when it’s chocolate cake), she learns and I get to admire how much she is growing and changing. I have a digital Slr but have never gotten the hang of it and would love to be able to capture these precious memories better. Thanks for the opportunity.

  36. My favourite thing to do with my 3 boys (5,3 & 1) is to travel. The boys cant wait to get on a plane or pack in to the car to go on another adventure, where they can click away on their tablets to photograph absolutely anything and everything. They don’t like crowds so the usual things like stage shows, the royal show etc are not really their thing. The freedom of travel certainly has them hooked from such a young age and we adults cant complain either 😉

  37. So excited you are coming to Perth! My favourite thing to do with my kids is to read out loud to them before bed time. My mum used to do the same with me & my siblings. I put on the character voices and chat to them about what is going on in the book. Plus I get to read all my childhood classics with them.

  38. My favourite thing to do with Mia (nearly 6y) is getting creative. She is so in love with art and photography and is always taking photos of things she’s created. Last time we went to the zoo she took 75% of the photos because I wasn’t allowed the camera! She loves to draw and paint and we often do this together with her 3.5yr old sister on the weekends. Mia would absolutely LOVE this workshop, she wants to be an artist and photographer when she grows up she has informed me 🙂

  39. I really love taking my two bike riding. We have some gorgeous lakes nearby with bike paths going all the way round, so it’s relaxing and fun for all of us. My youngest is only five, so we all travel at his pace! You’ll love Perth, we moved here a couple of years ago and fell in love ?

  40. My favorite thing to do with my boys is seeing them grow and develop and learn and experience the world. My 3yo and I spend so much time having new experiences together, and although he loves taking his own “shelfies”, I’d actually love to bring my 13yo stepson to the workshop. He’s such a creative human and we have always loved making stop motion films of his toys. He used to get me to take Lego characters to work and document their day with me. I would love to reignite that passion and creativity with him, especially now it’s getting harder to relate to a teenage boy!

  41. My son absolutely loves animals so we have a family annual pass to the local wildlife park and are there at least once a fortnight. He is on first name basis with one of the keepers now who let’s him touch the sleeping wombat or hold a snake. His second fav thing to do is to grab my phone and take photos of EVERYTHING. I have hundreds of photos of nothing in particular but can’t bring myself to delete them. I hope his love of animals and photos combines and stays with him for life!

  42. There’s nothing I love more than doing ‘nothing’ with my Boys. It seems that these times are more memorable than the paid outings. It’s the sitting in the dirt and creating a secret land, or talking about ‘treasures’ we find on walks. I love seeing the World through their eye’s as it always seems a much happier place.

  43. My favourite thing to do with my daughter is to let her direct our play/activities. We don’t often have time to let her take the reins but when we do I am always amazed at her creativity and imagination. A great way to learn about what she is interested in and has learnt about recently.

  44. Our favourite thing to do in our busy lives is to find a little quiet time to have a cuddle and a HUG. Sometimes the stillness is filled with so much 🙂

  45. My favourite thing to do with the my boys is look at old photos. We have such a huge family, showing all the photos let’s them realise how many there is to still meet, and get to know loved ones that are now in heaven and we miss very much. It’s something I adored doing with my grandparents so it’s something I treasure doing with them. —- so excited you’re coming to Perth!!! I cannot thank you enough for the Olympus recommendation. My new camera is AMAZING!!! ?

  46. my favourite thing to do with my 2 girls is anything that makes them happy. whatever it is im sure to take lots of pics! they are only this young once, & i never want to forget a single moment. their toes, the way their hair fell, their laughter, it all needs to be captured, as it will never return again!? u can check on out on insta @thelittlebugs

  47. Our favourite thing to do together is to have impromptu dance parties. Whenever the need takes us, we crank the music and get our groove on. What a great way to connect and also a wee bit of exercise!

  48. My two daughters and I LOVE geocaching together. The compass leads us to some of the most picturesque cache sites in the world. With 2.8 billion geocaches stashed worldwide the world really is your oyster!

  49. My favourite thing to do is just simply to hang out with my daughter, whether it be taking the dog for a walk to the park, a walk to the beach and a play in the water, shopping, watching movies or getting together with friends and their kids, just spending time together laughing and having fun is wonderful.

  50. Funny you should ask…. We did it this weekend! It was just the two of us this weekend and it was a ” her choice ” weekend. Of course she choose our favourite thing and all you need is a rug. We grab a rug a lay down outside and look up . However , where you lay is important. It’s got to be where you can see the sky and a tree and you just be.. You know when the sky touches the leaves? Where green meets blue? That’s our favourite bit. Who said blue and green should never be seen? We lay and we talk. We talk about school , about friends. We talk about nature and we talk about the universe. About science and miracle. And sometimes we say nothing at all…..

  51. My favourite thing.. that’s a toughy. I know their favourite thing is me getting down and playing My Little Pony, or colouring in with them, or drawing with them or pushing them on the swing amongst a million other things. To be honest, I love doing EVERYTHING with them because I know there will come a time when they don’t want to involve me as much as they do now (this will make me die a little inside, ok, A LOT) but it’s a way off yet thank goodness. So spending a day with Lily (the oldest) taking photos and hanging out would be just amazing for us both! I’d do it with Grace (the youngest) next year… your coming next year too right? 🙂

  52. My favourite thing to do with my kids is cook and bake! I just love having them in the kitchen and getting them excited about cooking! It’s something I rarely was able to do with my mum, and so I cherish it so much with my children. Sometimes, the mess is a little overwhelming, but I know we are making amazing memories and I really want them to remember how we enjoyed that time together!
PS I’m so excited you’re coming to Perth!! x

  53. We live for water! Mostly the beach where the sun sets over the water 😉 but also pools, water slides, baths, any form of water and my children are in 🙂

  54. Oh Chantelle – I would love to meet you, just to chat let alone everything else you are offering, but I dont have a child, nor one I could borrow – lol. My 4 are 18 through 25.
You have chosen a wonderful place in our beautiful city. Perth will always be mt home no matter where in the world we are – but we do need to be more proactive for the future of the city. Longer trading hours and daylight savings are just a couple that spring to mind – but there will always be the great divide amongst Perth’s inhabitants.
If you are doing anything other than this particular get together, please let me know xx
    Kathy Cooper

  55. Wow this is really exciting!! My favourite thing is watching them explore and learn!! I love it when their faces light up with understanding…. or their looks of concentration when trying to figure something out!! At the moment we also LOVE our books… so snuggling on the couch with the kids for story time is something we enjoy more than once a day!! it won’t last forever….

  56. This would be an amazing opportunity and to meet you too Chantelle!!! I have a love of photography and would love to pass on that love to my son also. He already asks to use my phone to take pictures of all his favourite things around the house. My favourite thing to do with him (at his request) is to just sit together and snuggle on the couch! With me working full time and him having to go to before and after school care life is a little bit hectic and we don’t get to spend much time together and it’s the little things like this that make me feel loved.

  57. My 6 year old daughter Ruby
and I love to lie on our backs and watch the clouds roll by and chat about our day 🙂 lovely girl time together in a house full of boys x

  58. My favourite thing to do with my children (3yr old and 1yr old boys) is simply enjoy them – their cuddles and kisses, listening to their little voices and having adorable conversations. My most recent favourite thing is participating in a role play coffee shop. Buying and sipping at pretend take away cappuccinos.
I always pack our ‘point and shoot’ camera in the nappy bag ready for happy snaps wherever we are and use our digital SLR (mostly on auto) on occasion to capture life’s little moments, then I turn the photos into lasting memories in digital photo books.
We LOVE snuggling up looking back at these books that I have spent hours making.
My eldest son, Jack, would get a real thrill learning how to put Mummy in the photos as I’m generally the one behind the camera.

  59. Play at the beach. It’s the simplicity of it, no tv, no distractions, no expense, 100% concentration on my family. It’s fun at its simplest, it’s most natural, and it’s absolutely beautiful. Absolutely. Beautiful. Our girls have just begun sailing lessons too and it has very quickly become my favourite. To see the genuine huge smiles, the pride, and the satisfaction of these gorgeous young ladies (8 and 10 yrs) learning to control a small boat all on their own is as bewildering (to me!) as it is satisfying. Their confidence is blooming and I would love some help capturing it on camera. I can only imagine the images they could collect from their positions out at sea too!

  60. This is is so awesome, what a terrific idea and experience for the kidlets. My favourite thing to to with my daughters is to go out collecting and foraging for leaves, sticks, stones, flowers, gum nuts etc at the park or just walking around the hood. I steer them towards the more aesthetically pleasing objects such as a pretty flower or beautifully coloured leaf but they always gravitate towards the leaves that are beaten up, or an old elastic band they find on the ground. And that’s totally cool. We like to examine all of our finds and work out where they’ve come from, I usually take pictures of the best ones in little arrangements and the girls help me style their own version which is super sweet.

  61. My daughters favourite thing to do is be outside and play. To encourage this we have started to venture out to different places around Perth and just explore and be out side together, our favourite places are of course the beach, Lesmurdie Falls (a waterfall and hike trail just outside of the city) and love discovering new places all of the time. Best of all these activities are practically FREE and encourages us to be out side and enjoy quality time together and creating memories (with lots of photos of course!)

  62. My favourite thing to do with my children is to play in the garden, planting seeds, watching them grow and looking at all the bugs we find along the way. It’s such an adventure and they learn so much about world.

  63. Having 3 ninjas ( 3 boys ) our house revolves around sport, particularly soccer ⚽️ weather it’s training, grass hopper soccer, Outdoor Sunday league in winter, indoor Friday night in summer or just all the kids (and adults ) in the street playing an impromptu game on our front lawn. You can bet there is a soccer ball and strip involved. But my favourite thing to do with ( my 2 big ninjas) is take them to the Perth Glory Home games to cheer on our team and get some autographs and photos with their heros after the game. I love to see how passionate they are becoming about the game and I love to see them dream big of one day stepping out into NIB stadium in purple ?

  64. By far, my most favourite thing to do with my daughter, is to run in the rain.

The nervous giggle she has, when continually checking that it is, actually ok…. before her explosion of laughter as she bursts from the house into the weather. Is the most heart moving thing ever… and always, draws me into the laughter-filled craziness too!

  65. It’s kinda hard to pick just one thing! We love going to the beach and doing a spot of wave jumping. This tends to end in everyone getting drenched, including mummy so I’ve finally learnt to keep a change of clothes on hand for ALL of us! Somehow we just always seem to gravitate towards the water.
My absolute favourite part of the day with my oldest girl though, is when she tells me about her dreams. It’s something we’ve done since she was little and she will still seek me out to tell me what adventures the last night brought to her.

  66. My favourite thing to do with my kids is to just get outside and enjoy the sunshine. We are trying to adopt a more active lifestyle so the kids now do Little Athletics, it is so much fun. We try to do Parkrun on a Saturday morning, and we recently did The Color Run, the kids had the best time, so did we!
We also love watching movies with the kids, we are making our way through the Jurassic Park films at the moment, colouring together is fun and also doing photo of the day, I love Miss 6’s perspective.

  67. Having 3 kids is a total juggle to play with at the appropriate levels. So my ideal moment is when I have the rare opportunity to spend 1 on 1 time with them to do whatever they choose. Be it shopping, playing nail salons, playing in the pool. I don’t get the opportunity often to not have all 3 together so it would be such a relaxing dream to be able to spend time together with my middle danger, 12yrs, to both learn together how to use our cameras and lunch together!!
