The Unsung Heroes

Brought to you by Steggles.

I have shared a whole heap of stuff on this blog, so it’s not often I can share something you might not already know. Maybe today is that day. Here it is; my family is a little bit football mad. Including me.

The other night we went out to dinner  at an old Italian restaurant in Sydney, and they had the TV playing in the corner with the footy on. I was caught watching it more than once. I even got a bit rowdy, and had to pull myself together. The reason I got rowdy though is because my cousin plays first grade and was playing, and that’s reason enough to yell at the TV while having an Italian dinner, right? Right. ?

Starting Lulu young!

So, my cousin plays, my husband used to play a lot, my other cousins both played representative and first grade back in their hey-day, and my younger cousin, Jack, is being scouted at present to play once he’s old enough, and already represents New South Wales in his age group. He’s really amazing, and I love watching him grow and thrive.

Football is in my family. I know everyone has their own favourite team, but for my little family it’s the Roosters all the way {Hubby is so obsessed that his Instagram name is about the Roosters!}. When we lived in Sydney we’d go and watch the game with Lacey, and back before we had kids it was something we did together and loved. Our kids each have jerseys, and I have two jerseys in my cupboard too. Hubby has every piece of Roosters gear you could probably find, because FAN.

Lacey collects footy cards, and can spot a Roosters player from afar, even after a long flight!

Coming from a family that has dedicated lots of their life to the game, I’ve seen the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. I am constantly in awe of the hard work Jack’s mum Julie puts in. She’s the taxi every week, the support crew, the chef, the personal assistant, she’s everything. His dad is the assistant coach, too. I praise them often because not only is Jack a great sportsperson, he’s also an awesome human being {who knew teenage boys were so awesome with kids and babies. He loves our little people}. He’s destined for really great things.

There are mums every Saturday who dedicate their early mornings to their kids and their sports. They’re cutting oranges, washing jerseys, giving up their own sleep-ins, and being everything to their kids. It’s beautiful dedication and love, and so inspiring too. The mums behind the scenes are the unsung heroes of the sport, they really are. They’re the true legends of the game.

On July 21st, when the Sydney Roosters ran out onto the pitch for their game against the Newcastle Knights, each player wore a very special jersey.
On that night, where the Steggles logo usually proudly sits, each Roosters jersey featured the name of the woman who has played the most significant role in that player’s life.
Some players chose to honour their mother, some their grandmother, and others their wife or partner.

To recognise and reward the crucial roles these women have played, and continue to play, in shaping the lives of these young athletes, join us in celebrating the true legends of the game: the women in league.

Who would you have on your jersey? Who is your unsung hero?

Mine would have to be my own mum, because she’s the best person in the world. She’s everything. So supportive, even now that I’m an adult. She’s is the most caring, beautiful, loving person you’ll ever encounter. Ever.

Steggles is giving away 10 custom jerseys to ten lucky people. All you have to do is answer that question: Who would you have on your jersey, and why? The competition closes REALLY soon, so jump over and enter here.

  1. We my dear are mortal enemies! It is going to be back to back Sharkies I tell you! My cousins used to play for the Sharks and Mat Rogers shared a house with me for a while … Footy is in my blood. I have a mixed marriage though hubby is a Dragons Fan!!

  2. When I first came to Australia and met my long lost family, they were all mad chook fans so I became one too. I used to love going to watch them play although I’ve swapped codes and Aussie Rules is my favourite, I always cheer for my chooks. My mum would be my unsung hero, she’s always been my confidante, my best friend and believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Plus she brought me up single handedly and if I say so myself, she did a bang up job 🙂
