French Onion Meatballs

Just like mum used to make, but with a twist. These mini French Onion meatballs have a tasty addition of French Onion soup mix, which brings up the flavour and makes them a great snack, or dinner idea.

French Onion Meatballs

I made these last night, and Lulu had some friends over doing a movie project. Each year they have to make a movie for school, write the script, film it and then edit it, and present it for the whole school to vote. This year they’re working on a kidnapping story – and it involves a Grandpa mask. I’m leaving them to it!

While they were making their movie, I whipped up these mini French Onion meatballs, with the intention of having them for dinner, along with a few salads we had in the fridge. Shane was on night shift, so easy dinners are our go-to on nights like that. I made the meatballs ahead of time (mostly so I could grab the good light, and photograph them for the blog!) and popped them on the bench for a moment.

The kids smelled them, came out from editing and asked it they could have some. I said of course, and next minute the plate was empty. So we had to pivot our dinner plans! 😜

They’re just that good. I’m going to make them again today, and double the recipe!

Ingredients for French Onion Meatballs

How to make French Onion Meatballs

STEP ONE: In a large bowl, combine the mince, onion, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, French Onion soup mix, and egg. Mix well to combine. I find it’s best to use your hands here, but if that grosses you out, you can use a spatula.

All the ingredients combined

STEP TWO: Roll the mixture into heaped tablespoon sized balls, and roll each in plain flour to coat, and shake off excess. Arrange on a plate or tray, and chill for 10 minutes in the fridge (this just makes them stay together better – but I often skip this step when I’m short on time, and it’s totally fine).

STEP THREE: Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and place oil in the pan. Cook the meatballs for 8-10 minutes, turning to cook all sides.
