A Little Kindness Goes A Long Way

I was walking down the aisle at the supermarket last weekend, and I passed by an elderly lady in a wheelchair checking out the stationery section. I said to her, “Let me know if you need anything from up high. I’m happy to grab it.” We both smiled at each other warmly.

And then I stood at the magazines and read them, because sometimes when you’re child-free you’ve got to soak that stuff up. The lady didn’t need my help. The post-it notes she wanted were within reach. She stopped to chat though, about life, her life. “I hate to be a burden on people,” she said, “so I’m glad that you offered. It was so nice to know you cared enough to stop. I feel bad that I never have anything to offer in return though.”

“You do though,” I assured her, “You stopping to chat to me has made my day better, thank you.”

There’s not a lot I think is more important than putting more kindness into the world. I don’t know why it’s such a thing for me, but I just think it’s so easy to do. The story above isn’t remarkable or earth-shattering, but I share it so that it shows how easy it can be. It’s simple to see opportunities for kindness and embrace them.

This week the challenge is to do a random act of kindness. Can you spread more joy around the world by giving a little more kindness this week? What’s the Make Life Good Challenge?
