Creating a big girl room for my biggest girl

After having Luella, Lacey just seemed to grow up quickly. I guess at six years of age it’s probably time to stop sleeping in a toddler bed! It was all my doing, and none of hers of course. My decorating style probably isn’t a style at all, instead I like to have things around our home that make us smile. Things that just make us happy. These things are often a little bit quirky and fun {read: weird} but that’s the way we like it.

First up was the bed. We put away the sweet toddler bed for Luella, and assembled the big girl bed. This one is from Incy Interiors, from their Spindle range. You can choose any colour you like, which was too hard for me because I want the bed to stay with Lacey until she’s in her teens so I decided to go with white. That way she can add colour with her quilts, and other bits and bobs.

I don’t know if it’s a grown-up thing, because at 34 I’m kinda getting there… but I’ve realised that I’m better off buying better quality things when I can that will last the years. I deliberated over this heart shelf for a long time, but I’d fallen so deeply in love with it… I had to have it. If Lacey gets bored with it, I’ll move it into my office, or Luella’s room, or my bedroom. Basically it can go anywhere. I love it.

Lacey takes after her mother and loves to collect small trinkets, so the shelves make the perfect home to those.

The one thing Lacey really, really wanted was a big girl desk to do her homework on. The biggest challenge was finding one small enough that it didn’t take up the whole room. I spotted a little dressing table and mirror set at Home Art for $50 and quickly snapped it up {minus the mirror}. It’s the perfect size for her, and fits easily into the corner of her room.

This is the door that Trixie the tooth fairy uses to collect all the teeth that Lacey has been losing lately. THREE! She’s lost three. I hope she slows right down now, otherwise I’ll be pureeing all her food again.

And now we’re done. We’ve slowly collected and made her room into a big girl room that she loves spending time in. I love peeking in and seeing how beautiful it is. It’s my favourite room in our house. x

  1. This is such a fun, happy room. So much personality and you definitely have an eye for design. I hope Lacey adds her own touches as the years go on, too.

    • I should have showed the other wall. She kindly decorated it in stickers… so she’s already starting. Plus we did all the other decorating together. 🙂

  2. It’s beautiful. My kids got to choose Most of their bedroom items & then they can move things around they way they like it.
It’s important to them to be able to show their own style.
To make it their own Haven.

  3. I love the heart cushion and I think I need a letter and ice-cream light! I have an obsession with collecting funky little bits and bobs for bubs room now too. I’ve just started collecting sonny angels (it could be dangerous).

  4. Looks lovely – grown up but not too grown up. Where did you get those little preserved bugs from that are sitting in the heart shelf? We have some great botany and entomology prints and I’d love to find a few bibs and bobs like that to go with them.

  5. What a gorgeous room! I love decorating my little girl’s room – mostly because my hubby has no interest and she’s been too young to make many demands so I’ve been largely free to do as I like 😀
Glad you went for the heart shelf, it’s fabulous.

  6. Gorgeous. I love the pineapples. I am obsessed with pineapples at the moment. Just put some prints up in my Little Mister’s big boy room we’re decorating! 🙂

  7. The heart shelves. Pretty sure I have to have them! I am planning on moving the girls in to a room together once Zee starts sleeping longer at night, so that I can turn the bigger room in to a play room for them. I know I am gonna need to do some re-decorating so that Punky identifies the room that is currently Zee’s as hers as well, and knows that her room is now for sharing. It’s gonna be an interesting transition, but I figure getting some new things just for them room, and letting her choose a few things herself will help with the transition!

  8. Glorious! My little girl is 15 months old and we are gearing up to move house. Planning a room for a little girl who is very quickly leaving baby-hood behind is very exciting. Tell me, were the pineapple decals a total nightmare to attach in a neat manner? They are wonderful.
