I’m a dreamer.

You may say I’m a dreamer.
But I’m not the only one.

I’ve shared before that I sometimes live with my head in the clouds. I think anything is possible. I believe one day I’ll win lotto. Even on days I haven’t bought a ticket.

On Monday afternoon I walked up the road to the newsagent with Hubby and Lacey to grab some groceries and check some old tickets I had. That’s my favourite time for dreaming. “Imagine if we won even just $50,000,” and then I start rattling off what I’ll do with the money and how much easier our lives will be.

The tickets went through and we won $52.10. Just a few zeros short of a big win. Last night there was a big draw of $50 million so I spent a little of the money and bought another ticket. And then I started dreaming again.

Chatting to my mum about lotto she shared a story about a guy from her work. He’d helped a customer who came into the store, and in return she bought him a ticket. What do you know? He won $200,000. Do you know what he did? He gave the lady who bought it for him half of it. Kind sod, I’m not sure I could. Family, charity – yes. Lady I served at work – no.

Last night on Facebook I started a conversation about lotto {it’s on my mind this week!} and I asked what people would do if they won. Lots of people said that they’d keep it a secret and wouldn’t tell a soul. I’d like to do the same, but I can be a blabbermouth at the best of times. If I win, and don’t tell anyone, you’ll soon be able to tell when I start cruising around in a stretch hummer {downfall: so hard to reverse park} and wearing Prada to the supermarket.

If you won the big bucks, would you tell anyone? Would you share it?

  1. I buy a ticket whenever I need permission to dream. Like during the last few weeks of pregnancy or waiting for a difficult patch in life to pass. I've never one more than a few dollars – but I love that it opens the door to my dreams. It really is a ticket to dream.

  2. What wouldn't I do. Probably would try to keep it on the down low, but I know I would fail miserably. I would do the usual stuff, you know help out needy people, give to my family. Then I would probably travel the world with my little family, pack them up and see the world a little more. ooooh and have houses in all my favourite places. Our usually residence would have an amazing library. BUT I don't buy lotto tickets. So I guess I will have to wait to work to richdom or hope some “kind sod” passes some on.

  3. I don't play the lotto but if I did and won the jackpot I'd share it out in my family – I'd tell my parents where the money came from but I don't think I could tell my grandparents not out of spite or to be mean or anything like that but because I know that they don't condone betting of any form. I'd try and share a share of the money with them but put it towards a holiday or something where they wouldn't know the share I'd put towards it or where the money came from or something like that – I'm not lying am I?

I'd help my brother get on the housing ladder – he's looking at saving money towards a deposit but it's harder than it looks with the economy being so far down the drain at the moment. I have a mortgage and could do with paying some of that off too but I think helping my brother would be a higher priority in a strange way (especially as we think he might be about to propose to his girlfriend)

  4. We've had these conversations at work over the past couple of weeks. The $30 million last week. The $50 million last night. And now it's jackpotted again to $70 million! Our little syndicate got expanded when that happened, in our dreams we didn't want to leave our workmates behind, LOL! I hope that whoever wins it, it goes to more than one person. For me, if I won, I'd probably try to keep it pretty quiet. I have modest dreams, so I think it would probably be possible. I do dream of paying of the mortgage and being comfortable financially… maybe next week, LOL!

  5. It's nice to dream about these things. In every dream I start with paying back my study loan… that would be really nice. If I would have money left I would think about what next. Maybe a new car, sharing some money with friends who could use it and a nice holiday? I don't think I would move right away and spend it all… 🙂 I like my flat and my life as it is.

  6. I would definitely share it. I would tell but not the amount. People can be judgemental and I wouldn't want people determining whether they thought my generosity was nice or stingy. If they didn't have the full figure to compare it to they would have to accept grateful. No one needs to know if you won enough to pay off your mortgage or enough to buy a small island.

  7. I make plans all the time about what I will use the money for when I win a large amount – generally via a scratchie.
    Not that I buy them.
I would like to pay off some bills / loans, finish off our kitchen renovations, be more generous with friends and family (around-the-world plane tickets for my parents!)

  8. I'm sure I would tell some people, but not everyone. I'd repay my debt, I'd give quite a amount to my mother and to my father so that they wouldn't have to worry about old-age pension.
I would do some random acts of kindness, like, big ones.
Then I would put the money in the bank and live off the interest, thus increasing my life standard. I would live off organic food and only wear clothes that were produced under humane conditions.
I certainly would travel more and go to all the workshops and conferences I fancy 🙂
Maybe I would support small shops I like – you know, those small ones with an old lady inside who has worked their all her life, but now barely can live from the proceeds.
And with all this, I would of course include my boyfriend. He always has been there for me, and if I have the opportunity, I will always support him.

  9. Nice post. I´ve never won more than like 5 euros or so. Congrats on that! 🙂 I agree that I would not share. Winning a large amount of money can bring unwanted “friends” as well and I would like to avoid that.

I would share with friends and people I know. I would pay their loans or stuff like that; I´d do something that´ll make their life easier.

  10. No, only my partner and parents. I think people may expect something from you and if they dont get it, it can ruin relationships. I joke with my partner all the time he needs to go halves in the ticket with me otherwise he wont get half 🙂

  11. I'm also a dreamer who believes we will win one day. Sadly, I think we share this characteristic with many, so I don't think the principles of positive thought will help us here.

I believe here in Canada the winners are announced, so I'm not sure keeping it a secret is an option. Seems like it would be a very hard secret to keep!

I plan on sharing my winnings with family and friends 😉

  12. My husband and father-in-law buy lotto tickets every week and are constantly talking about what they would do with their winnings. Just last night my husband said , “If I could just win 2 million that would be enough. I'm not asking for much.” Needless to say we are still waiting, but dreaming in the process.

  13. I have to pull myself out of a 'winning tatts' daydream as it can go on for hours! And I always feel a little sad coming back to reality…but it's still worth it for the dream.

  14. I would try my hardest to keep my mouth shut just until I get my hands on the money and I would go buy some new things for my family that I know they need or want and give it to them at the same time telling them I won the friggin' lottery! Haha! I'd give both of our families some money then pay off our credit cards & loans and go on vacation then save/invest the rest!

  15. Yes I would tell only my family and best friend, I would give money to charity's.

I would rebuild the house, go on a vacation. YAY I love dreaming

  16. I always say that I'm destined to win the lottery some day. I hope it's not too selfish of me to say that I hope that destiny manifests itself while I'm still young enough to enjoy it!

DH always says that he wouldn't tell a soul, because he knows all the types that would come out of the woodwork looking for a share, and he fears I wouldn't be able to say no. Unfortunately, the state we live in requires winners to be identified, so I guess we'd just have to look at changing our number, or letting him do all the answering!

But, I certainly would share–with my family and dear friends, of course, but also with some organizations I feel are doing worthwhile work. I'd pay off some bills, maybe build the perfect house, and then I'd travel. Oh, the places I would go! (And, btw, Australia would be first on the list, as I've wanted to visit there since I was a little girl.)

  17. I've wrote a list which I keep in purse how much I'd give to each family member and charities.
If I won it I wouldn't tell the media.
    xo

  18. Hubby and I have discussed this in detail (Just in case!!!). We would give each of our siblings and parents a chunk each and then try to keep it on the down low. I can just imagine the 'friends' that would appear with their hands out!

  19. Someone I know won 700,000 & hasn't shared it w/ their family at all. I know that I'd pay off debts. Put aside for the kids. Put some where I can't touch it. Definitely buy a house b/c I'm renting. Buy a trainer that'll kick my ass in shape. Go to Italy. Idk the rest.

  20. I would buy a house first then with what is left share with family. They would understand my dream is to have my own place & plus I am the one that played lotto not them.

I do know that if my dad wins he'll pay his debit & then buy a home for him & my mum, one for my sister & one for me. Thats if he wins mega big.

  21. Keeping it a secret means you don't have all the leeches come out of the woodwork expecting a handout. It also means you keep it from you partner in case what, you want to seperate or divorce.

Basically you don't want the attention, and if you have kids, they could be kidnapped for the money. So you have to weigh up a variety of things.

I personally don't. I'd move to Queensland, buy a place on the S and G Coasts and maybe even one in Brisbane, set up a bricks and mortar jewellery store, buy a place in Sydney and Melbourne, travel overseas for a year or two, big spending spree on clothes, accessories stuff….I could go on.

  22. Many many moons ago my parents won a bit of money in a second chance draw through the Scratchies. Gold Lotto asked at the time if they minded having their details published and they kindly but firmly said hell to the no.

They kept their winnings nice and quiet and ended up paying a chunk off their mortgage, with minimal requests from family and friends asking for hand outs 🙂

  23. I have never played but I still think about it occasionally! I'd definitely give some of it to something worthwhile. (What goes around comes around and all that!) Maybe dividing into 3rds would be best: save, give, and spend.

  24. I too am a dreamer. I love to dream about winning Lotto.
If I won- I would pay of all off my families debts (my fiancee and I and my parents), buy a new car (suv) for my family and a new access friendly car for my dad (my mum has MS and needs a wheel chair to go out). Then if I have enough left I would buy a big (HUGE) block of land and build a lovely house and granny flat on it so that me and my family can live the life we want and my parents can live with us so that I can help my dad out with mum.
Then of course there is clothes for teenager, toddler, hubby, and me.

  25. I don't think that I would tell anyone. I probably pay off the rest of my college for the upcoming years, make sure my parents and grandparents are good, get a few designer items and save the rest. Oh and take a much needed vacation! 😀

  26. I thought I was the only dreamer – now I know I have fellow online friends who do. While driving home from fetching dd from school, I was dreaming of having $50,000. I am also hoping god will hear me out and present me with that money. Now, will I tell anyone? My hubby, off course. I will save a portion of it and the rest pay off my debts.

  27. I'd hazard a guess and say if you won the big one, and were cruising around in a stretch hummer, you wouldn't be the one parking it! 🙂 My husband and I have had lengthy conversations about what we'd do with lotto winnings of $30M or more. Immediate family instantly get $1M each. That's $8M. A new house, plus about 5 investment properties (minimum), 2 new cars, a beach house, set up a foundation to disperse money to childrens hospitals/other charities annually…rest in a high yield savings account. And every time I get absolutely devastated that we haven't won. but…someone has to, why not us?

  28. I often dream of the BIG win too Chantelle! But hardly ever buy a ticket – only on the really big ones – and even then only sometimes! However, I still dream away with all the things we could with that money. Cassie xx

  29. oh that reminds me of one of my favourite movies “It Could Happen To You”. It's a cheesy movie but based on a true story and if you haven't seen it you totally should. I love it.
anyway – if I won lotto I would like to keep it a secret but I don't know if I could. I mean I'm on twitter for a start so, I would probably blurt it out pretty quickly while popping the cork on whatever bubbly I could grab.
