Tell me a good book to read! And do you TV in the bedroom?

large_3955539616

Tomorrow my mum moves in with us for 20 weeks while her house is getting built. So I’m down an office, and up a live-in babysitter. We moved my workspace into our bedroom. Our bedroom is abnormally big. And hey, I ain’t complaining. But coming from a teeny tiny apartment in Bondi and seeing this house for the first time, we were like kids in a candy store. They old owners had a WHOLE lounge setting in the bedroom as well as a bed. So now I’ve got a small desk, my chair and piles of work staring at me.

It meant we had to move the TV out of the bedroom. I know TVs in bedrooms is like a dirty subject. I’ve raised the topic {hesitantly} on Facebook before, and people are quite passionate. It was handy when I had babies who didn’t sleep, but now I have a baby that sleeps {huzzah!}.

But, I’m all for change. So I told Hubby to pack it up and put it away. For six months {maybe forever if we like it} I’m going to be all about having conversations and reading books.

Tell me, what’s the last book you read and how do you rate it? And let me in on your bedroom secret, do you do TV in the bedroom… or not?

  1. No TV in the bedroom. Is never read if I had one in there. The last book I read was the 6th book in the Women’s Murder Club series by James Patterson.

  2. I do have a tv in my bedroom but I mostly read. What do you feel like reading?

    1. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
    2. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore
    3. Vicious by VE Schwab
    4. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
    5. ANY BOOKS BY MELINA MARCHETTA
    6. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
    7. The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
    8. Landline by Rainbow Rowell

I don’t know what you like but here’s some. 🙂

  3. Wow, your bedroom sounds amazing! We have an old little fat backed thing in our bedroom (now with cheapo set top box – keeping with the times haha), which I used to watch when Mr Unprepared worked FIFO. It kept me company because I always wanted to go to bed early instead of sitting alone out in my big cold house. Now he has a job at home, so we rarely use it. I would love to chuck it out completely, but I think Mr Unprepared is not quite ready to say goodbye to it (he comes from a TV family lol).
I like reading biographies/true stories and anything by Jodi Picoult. I’m about to start Mindy Kaling’s book. I’ve been “about to” start it for a really long time, but I’ll get there!

    • Hi Kez and Chantelle, a bit of blatant self promotion but you will never need a TV in the bedroom if you read my book ‘Awakening the lost women’. It’s the first in a 3 part series that sees a reclusive housewife go on a journey of self discovery after starting a blog. She becomes a strong emotionally, financially and sexually adventurous woman who achieves success beyond her wildest dreams. You can check out my blog for details at annabuckley.com
Wrote it after reading FS of G and couldn’t relate to the idea of a 21 year old virgin dependent on a man for all her achievements.

  4. The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden By Jonas Jonasson‎ – this is my current read and it is so quirky and whacky and I love it. So over doom and gloom – I always go to sleep happy and smiling after I’ve a read a chapter or two!

  5. I just recently bought Lauren Conrads Beauty book. I think It’s a must to have it has a lot of info and would be a great reference for quick tips. As of TV in the bedroom we used to but then we realized we never came out of our bedroom we ended up making it a living room a dining room and our bed; when you mix extremely comfy with Sons of Anarchy or American Horror Story there is no return.

  6. I have a tv in my room but we pretty much never use it except last night I did watch ten mins of the block while rocking the baby to sleep.

  7. I would never, EVER allow a TV in the bedroom. It distracts from the purpose of your bedroom (sleeping and *cough* marital relations). Though I haven’t yet figured out why I’ll allow the iPad in bed, but not a TV in the room…..

I’m currently reading the Maze Runner series. I have mixed feelings about it.

  8. I do have a TV in my bedroom but I rarely watch it. It’s more like it’s left over from my console days where I’d play games in my room and leave the television in the lounge for my parents to watch the News and whatever shows that they like. I prefer watching TV in the lounge but I like having the option of another TV set in case I want to watch something different.

The last book that I read was The Retreaters by Sharlene Miller and I thought it was a pretty great read. The rest of the ratings weren’t so high though 😉 What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty was another recent read albeit in audio form and I greatly enjoyed it too. Could you imagine waking up from an accident and missing ten years of your life, including the births of your children? It’s a really heartwarming read.

  9. Before having our son, we wanted EVERYTHING in one room. If we could have cooked in the bedroom, we probably would have. So there was the bed, and a makeshift lounge where we can eat off the coffee table in front of the TV. It was like a married version of college/dorm life I guess?

But now, maybe we’re trying to be more “adult” or maybe we simply grew out of whatever it was, so we have most things in their “proper” place and just the bed and some reading materials in the masters’.

I will recommend Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane.’ Currently reading ‘The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul’ (Deborah Rodriquez) and ‘Fangirl’ (Rainbow Rowell). Heard good things about ‘The Martian’ (Andy Weir) and ‘The Giver’ (Lois Lowry) so I have those next. 🙂

  10. I just finished The Catch by Taylor Stevens. I’d recommend starting with her first book The Informationist. I like reading series in order. No tv in the bedroom. No tv in the lounge room. Our tv is hidden behind closed doors in the rumpus room where the noise doesn’t annoy me and interrupt conversations. 😉

  11. We have a TV in bedroom but that’s because I’m a geek and like to watch ABC news and SBS docos in bed! Good book… Kelly’s Your Best Year Yet and now I’m about to start Clint’s Resevoir Dad, I’ll keep you posted! x

  12. Oh god yes I have a tv in my bedroom. Both of my kids have tvs in their bedrooms too, because bad parenting. But they never watch them, they always come out with us.

I watch my shows on my laptop, at night, propped up on one side, with my earbuds in. It’s my happiest time of day. Currently watching Damages with Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, is AWESOME. I needed a filler show after the heavy of True Detective.

    I still can’t read books.

I’m doing your #fmsphotoaday ….. and I’m realising a lot of things, by committing to do it once a day. I’ll tell you about it sometime, beautiful spunk.

    xxxxxx

  13. We have a tv in our room because when my hubby used to leave for work early in the mornings (when it was still dark and scary outside), it distracted me so I didn’t hear noises in the house. I am a bit of a chicken like that.

I am not reading any books at the moment. I’m new to blogging, so I have spent hours in bed reading lots of blogs, like Fat Mum Slim! When I do read books I usually go for biographies.

  14. We do have a tv in our bedroom and we did use it a lot to watch movies, series etc but since having my son I haven’t looked at the tv once. Only thing that is playing on it now are cartoons in the morning.

  15. I do have a TV with Foxtel in my bedroom but in saying that, I still live at home with my parents. The moment my boyfriend and I get our own space, I don’t want a TV in the bedroom.

  16. Just finished Dominion by C.J. Sansom, before that The truth about the Harry Quebert Affair by Joel Dicker. Both great reads.

  17. We do! But we actually don’t use it much…. because it doesn’t have Foxtel, hahaha. I think it would be different if it did, I’d watch so much more trashy tv!

Last good book I read: Currently reading ‘Orange is the New Black’ after I got ridiculously hooked on the tv show! Give it a whirl, based on a true story and it isn’t a massive book either. The TV show is great, if you ever get the TV back in your bedroom 😉

  18. I grew up with a tv in my bedroom but we don’t have one in ours. My husband is strongly against having a tv in the bedroom. I think I could go either way but I’m kind of glad we don’t have it in there. I don’t think we ever will.
I’m reading the White Queen series by Phillipa Gregory (of Other Boleyn Girl fame). I’ve read three, I’m halfway through a fourth and I’ve got two to go.

  19. We don’t have a TV in the bedroom and I don’t miss it, but in my case it might be a good thing. I always fall asleep on the sofa and it’s just not fun to wake up and move upstairs to continue sleeping. Plus our couches aren’t big enough to cuddle… Apart from that, I think a TV would wake up our son, who is at times a light sleeper. He’s in a different room but our house is rather ‘noisy’.
I like to read magazines in bed, but I would totally recommend any book by Eric Emmanuel Schmitt.

  20. I love having a TV in the bedroom! It doesn’t have to be a passion killer (there’s an off switch people!) As for books, It took me WAY to long to read, but I just finished Bonkers by Jennifer Saunders, Under normal circumstances it’d be an easy read (not with a toddler who’s obsessed with ripping pages out, so i had to read in secret). I’m about to read Ellen Degeneres’ ‘Seriously, I’m Kidding’ so hoping I can read it over the weekend!

  21. Yes I have a TV in my bedroom, but I can’t even remember the last time it was actually on haha! I just finished reading Paper Towns by John Green which is really nice! 🙂

  22. No TV but an iPad with Netflix does the job. Just me, myself and I (binge)watching my favorite series.
There’s a lot of great books… Do you like fantasy? Terry Goodkind’s ‘The Sword of Truth’ series is currently on my nightstand. It’s a series of eleven books so that should keep you going for a while 🙂

  23. We have a TV in the bedroom but rarely watch it. We’ve turned it on maybe three times this year. My favorite recent reads are:
    Sycamore Row by John Grisham
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
    Still Alice by Lisa Genova

I love love LOVE your blog, btw.

  24. A great book to read is “The Gateway Through Which They Came” by Heather Marie. It is available on Nook an Kindle. I would rate this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As for the TV in the bedroom, I do have one but rarely watch it when I go to bed. Enjoy the book!

  25. My daughter is a book worm who highly recommends Sunshine Coast author, Inga Simpsons books
    Mr Wigg and Nest.
Also, The Signature Of All Things
    Eat Pray Love
    The Book Thief

  26. We have only recently put a TV in our room, this was only because we won it and didn’t have anywhere else to put it.
I’m currently reading What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty it is a good story so far, but it’s taking me a while to read.

  27. No TV in our room. Hubby sometimes contemplates it but as he falls alseep in front of the tv in the lounge every night he’s already pefected it the other way round, why mess with that? 😉
I’ve just finished Cross My Heart by James Patterson. If you like mystery/thriller types you should like his books … They can get a bit aqloike at times but I am invested in the characters after reading this series for over a decade 🙂 I also like anything by Tess Gerritsen or Diana Gabaldon. Gabaldon’s series of books has just begun on SOHO as “outlander” Good show 🙂

  28. I’m a major bookworm, last week I read the latest Jack Reacher, Personal by Lee Child (love that series, my favourite book in the series is Die Trying and then the Enemy) and also Kathy Reichs newest, Bones Never Lie (TV series Bones is based loosely on the books/ Kathy’s life- books are different to the TV series). About to read the newest JD Robb, in Death series.

I can go on and on, but will stop there!

  29. I have recently read Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols, and I loved it! Now I’m halfway through Maria Semple’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette. I wrote about my thoughts on other books I’ve recently read here and here.

And by the way, I grew up with NO TV set in the bedroom. More often than not, I spend an all-nighter reading books. 🙂

  30. I had a TV in the bedroom for about 5-6 years and it totally messed up my sleep! Now it is in the living room and I don’t think it is ever going back in. I’m obsessed with Gillian Flynn so I would recommend all 3 of her books. Her debut Sharp Objects was superb!

  31. I have a toddler and not enough alone time to read (unfortunately).

We don’t have a TV in the bedroom as such. But we do have a computer that serves as our media server, so there’s a lot of movies and TV shows and the like on there that we watch while falling asleep. Sometimes we just play some background music with the visualiser going so that there’s white noise to help us sleep.

  32. Highly recommend The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. It’s funny, easy to read, yet smart & thought provoking, and it’s Aussie.

I have a no TV in bedroom rule, mainly because my husband would use it all the time and I like peace & quiet!

My parents have been living with us for 3 weeks now while they build also. It’s been really good, handy for babysitting and sharing a bit of housework. I’m sharing office space too though which means less time for Clever Cookie, but I’ll catch up! X

  33. I have no TV! Neither in my room or in my apartment. It’s been 4 years now since I left TV behind.
It’s no longer in my life. And it’s amazing.
As for books, these are awesome:

Any book by Malcolm Gladwell (specially: The Tipping Point)
Any book by Seth Godin (specially: Tribes)
    Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Manifesto on how to be interesting (AMAZING: about a girl who blogs in college)
You are a brand! By Catherine Kaputa (it’s non-fiction. very recommended for your blog)
Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg (non-fiction as well)

    Enjoy the reading!! xx

  34. I have a tv but I it doesn’t have an cable box hooked up. It is just for the computer hook up and dvds. I have read taste of paradise, farewell to arms, let’s explore diabetes with owls,Fahrenheit 451,the omnivore’s dilemma: a nature history of four meals,Uganda be kidding me,the 20 something guide to getting it together: A step by step plan for surviving your quater life crisis and mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore.

  35. We DON’T have a TV in the bedroom. We’d been together for about 6 years before we moved in together (high school sweethearts waddup!) So I was reading around on websites like Mamamia about relationships and how to keep them in the “happy times” realm. I decided not to have a TV in the bedroom after all of this, and to be honest we don’t ever think about having one in there anyway. We’re on our phones/tablets in the bedroom too so it’s not like we have a strict ‘no screens’ rule or anything!
On books – my favourite ever is The Night Circus. It’s such a gorgeous book, and we recently went to the circus around the corner from our house (it just popped up one day!) and it made me fall in love with the book all over again. I’m starting to read The Goldfinch. Have you read that one?

  36. Last book i read was Sex,Drugs and on the Dole. I rate it a 5 star, he seems to be a 1 hit wounder kind of author, but he hit it well

plus i tv in the bedroom every night before bed, the sound keeps me from thinking to much
