Shop the supermarket: Budget-friendly beauty buys

Brought to you by Coles.Shop the supermarket: Budget-friendly beauty buys

I’m not the sort of person that likes to hang out in the beauty department, or spend hours searching for the perfect foundation, or spend a gazillion dollars on a face cream. I love beauty and beauty products, but like everything I do… I like to do it quick and painlessly.

It’s how I roll.

Coles is having a big beauty sale in supermarkets around Australia in April. As you do you next grocery shop look for all the yellow tickets in the beauty aisle. You’ll see 50% off, 30% off, and more. There are different specials each week so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. I snuck out, filled my basket with budget-friendly beauty products and took them home to test them out {some of these you will find on sale during the month}.

ONE: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream
If you’ve not yet tried a BB Cream, I can highly recommend trying it. This one is an 8-in-1 cream that acts as a light foundation and concealor in one. Highlighting the good bits, and hiding the bits you don’t want people to notice {that serious lack of sleep last night!}. This one is 30% off this month at Coles.

TWO: Coles 4-in-1 Cleansing Wipes
I confess that when I don’t have cleansing wipes, I do use baby wipes {those things are magic} but these are much gentler on the face. They remove the make-up and grime from the day before you head to bed.

THREE: Neutorgena Hydro Boost with SPF 15
I don’t like anything heavy on my face {in terms of product, or elephants} so this gel is perfecto. It’s light, yet nourishing and has a SPF too. Sun protection for the win. Buy two from this range to save a pretty penny.

FOUR: Lucas Paw Paw Ointment

Every handbag has one of these in it, right? It’s perfect for keeping lips lovely, baby bottoms rash-free and ideal for cracks and sores that happen along that way. For under $3 it’s the perfect all-rounder {and on special this week until 14th of April}.

FIVE: Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencil {in Fuschia Desire}
I love this colour. If you’re not feeling quite in the mood to wear a full lip colour, you can go with a light coat and top with the Lucas Paw Paw Ointment to make it into more of a gloss.

SIX: Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara
I’ve been using this mascara for a while now, so I was happy to pick up another for 50% off {with this week’s special until 14th of April}. I know mascara is mascara {and I have a few running at the same time} but this one is good for every day wear. If you want thicker, darker lashes… apply a few coats.

SEVEN: Nude By Nature Nude Oil
Get on the oil train! No seriously, jump aboard. I’ve been using Rose Hip Oil for a while now, but this one has a cocktail of oils and natural good stuff. Put it on before bed {and then apply a night cream if you like}. It’s also 50% off this week only.

EIGHT: Vaseline Intensive Care Fragrance Free Spray Moisturiser
This one was for Hubby, who loves ANYTHING in an aerosol can. I swear if steak came in one, he’d probably whole-heartedly embrace it. It’s light, and nourishing and doesn’t feel like you’ve just covered your body in moisturiser {when you actually have}. Another that you can grab for half price this week.

These are a little bit more fancy-type beauty products, which I’d use for special occassions {parties, night’s out, you know the deal… when they actually happen, it’s good to be prepared!}.

ONE: Maybelline Express Remover
Ok, this isn’t really for a night out, but it’s so fancy {cool} that I had to share. The first time I tried this little magical stuff in a bottle, I rejoiced. It’s the shizzle. OK, it’s just nail polish remover but for someone {like me} who can never, ever find a cotton ball when I need it… this is a saviour. You just put your finger into the bottle, and your nail polish comes off in one go. Brilliant! {It’ll be on special in the coming weeks}. I haven’t quite yet worked out how to get it off my feet, so let me know if you know a way.

TWO: CoverGirl Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation

This gets my tick of approval because it’s not too heavy {my pet hate} but has a nice coverage. You can even mix it with a BB Cream if you want a lighter foundation, but a nice coverage.

THREE: Maybelline Master Hilight Blush & Bronzer
It’s pretty much two products in one. If you’re new to the bronzer game, watch this clip for how to apply it for a sun-kissed look. It’s my Bronzer Bible, pretty much.

FOUR: CoverGirl BombShell Eyeshadow
A light and luminous eyeshadow that’s easy to apply, because I’m one of those people who hasn’t {and probably won’t} mastered the art of eyeshadow application.

FIVE: TRESemme Fresh and Clean Dry Shampoo
You know those days when you should probably wash your hair, but you really can’t be bothered… this is for those days. You spray on your hair {around the scalp area} and it makes your hair fresher and clean-feeling. Every beauty cabinet needs this. It feels like your cheating… a little.

What’s your favourite budget-friendly beauty product?

P.S. Don’t forget these specials are only on during April, so check out the beauty aisle each week to see the specials.

  1. I have never tried BB Cream, but I feel I really should, given how much (little) sleep I’m getting these days. Thanks for this wonderful list. I’ll definitely check these out!

  2. I prefer Lumene`s cc cream to any bb 🙂 . And i love paw paw ointment! My sis brought some with her when she visited home(country) and I`ve been hooked ever since! Now she sends me fresh supplies when needed 😀

      • Yes! I love MaxFactor’s CC (colour correcting) cream over BB creams as I find it a much better match for my fair complexion and it both blends and builds much better than a BB. Admittedly, I’ve only tried one brand of BB cream (Garnier) but the colour, blend and overall appearance were so naff that it’s turned me off the BBs for a while.

I’m definitely with you on the Maybelline colour drama pencils, @fatmumslim – I’m loving ‘Fab Orange’ for that perfect hue between a red and an orange (I have trouble pulling off any red with too much pink in it) that I’ve had trouble getting anywhere else. It applies like a dream, has great staying power and looks incredible with a little gloss or a touch of similar coloured lippie on top for a sort of ombre effect. As a horrendously messy nail polisher, I can tell I’m going to have to try the Maybelline Express Remover. I’m guessing dunking your toes in hasn’t proven effective? [LOL].
I confess, I don’t actually keep my Lucas Paw Paw in my handbag — it lives at my bedside, ready to tackle the slightest sign of ouchy lip corners. I also swear by Fauldings Lanolin cream for painful, dry, crusty nose skin [around the nostrils] that occurs with excessive nose-blowing during cold season. Sweet relief!

The supermarket aisle is usually my go-to for facewipes (I like the ‘Simple’ brand, which are often well-priced as a two-pack), and I love, love LOVE scoring clearance ticketed lippies – especially those in the Rimmel and Maybelline families (Bit of a lipstick fiend, here!). I can also vouch for V05’s new hair product range – their Dry Shampoo and Texturising Spray are both great value and come in pretty pink cans. The texturiser is excellent for when I want to give my straightened hair a tousled/edgy look 😀

Thanks for sharing your excellent finds with us, @fatmumslim! And sorry ladies, for accidentally writing an essay. So many good products to share!

  3. p.s ignore me!! Sorry!! Didn’t read properly and just noticed the bit at the top. Great tips, may try the BB cream. X

  4. Thank You Chantelle x
I am off to get the BB Cream for my holiday OS. Will be trying the Maybelline Master Hilight Blush & Bronzer and Bombshell Gold Goddess Eyeshadow – I am a big fan of easy eyeshadow. Oh and I need a new mascara – alwasy love to shake it up a little 🙂

Can I give you a hint – don’t waste your money on makeup remover and wipes. Grab a Purely Pink Pack from ENJO this month ($1 goes to the McGrath Foundation) and you will never need a remover, cleanser or toner again – just water.
    xx

  5. I need some cheering up, so I’m going to head to Coles in my lunchbreak and pick up a Maybelline Color Drama Lip Pencil – because a new lipstick ALWAYS works! Also, how good is the Maybelline Express Remover?! I too haven’t worked out how to use it on my toes (I was tempted to bring it into work and pop it under my desk to try, but… too stinky). x
