Photography Lesson: How to remove objects from photos when you're not a professional

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t know this earlier, because it’s the BEST trick ever. I figured it out after going on a photography trip, and taking the same photos as other people and seeing that their photos turned out 3000% better than mine, and they seemed to be able to make things disappear from their photos. A little Google and I was on to their trickery.

Why would you want to delete things/objects/people from photos? Well, quite simply… a lot of the time they’re a distraction and they take away from what you’re trying to take a photo of. A photographer friend taught me early on to always consider the background in photos. No one needs a tree branch awkwardly sprouting from their head, or a pole getting in the way. My first tip would be to consider things before you snap the photo, but it would be quickly followed by my second tip: do a little editing magic!

Here’s how!

So, check out the below picture. Perfectly fine, I guess. But I didn’t know the people in the photo, so they add no meaning, but I really found the two on the edges of the photo slightly distracting. I wish I could have said, “GET OUT OF MY PHOTO PEEPS!”

Instead I edited them out.

I used the TouchRetouch App {grab it here}.

Choose Object Removal > Brush > Paint the area {try and paint ONLY the thing you want to remove – keep it tight}, and then click GO.

And shazzam…

They’re gone.

Then I edited it, brightened it, add a filter {VSCO, S1}… and it was like those people never existed {in my photo anyway}.

Give it a try and let me know how you go! Good luck. x
