So we’re going to shake things up a little with Photo A Day, here it is…

For a little while now I’ve been feeling like I wanted to shake Photo A Day up a little. I was thinking that it would be fun to give it a bit of a nip and tuck, and change the way it works a little {if only for a year}.

And so I had a little fun, dreamed a little and made it happen. It’s happening!

What are the changes?

Well, Photo A Day is going weekly. In the past the lists have always been monthly, and that’s been fun. But for some people it was too much of a commitment. So I thought about how I could make it easier, and weekly came to mind. So weekly it is. I am more excited about this than I probably should be.

Like we’ve done this year, we’ve also got very talented designers and artists and creative folk designing the lists. I kicked off with designing the first list, because I wanted to have a play… but after the first week you’re going to see some really fun, stunning and eye-catching designs. This year we had 12 designers, this year we’ll have a WHOPPING fifty-two.

I’ve got a handful of other great things planned for the year ahead, but I might keep a few secrets and reveal them in the New Year.

If you have an iPhone and iPad, the App will have a few little changes to adapt to the weekly list, plus some other cool things so as soon as the update is available, update it {unfortunately the approval process is taking longer than usual, but it should be ready any moment now}, or if you don’t yet have the App you can download it here.

How does it all work?

Photo A Day is still very much the same. You’ll check out the list, take a daily photo and share it. You can see below for more details on how to play along on Instagram and Facebook.

I’ll reveal a new list each Sunday in the Little Moments App, or each Monday on my blog here. If you want the new list sent to your inbox each Monday, just sign up here and you’ll get the list via email first thing Monday mornings. The list will generally run from Monday to Sunday {the first one is a short one because the first day of the year didn’t fall on a Monday}.

And here’s my creation for the first week of 2015…

January Photo A Day Challenge | Week One | 2015

Here’s all the juicy and necessary details on how to play

How to play on Instagram

+ check out the photo a day list for the daily prompt
+ use your phone or camera to take a photo using the prompt as inspiration
+ upload the photo to Instagram, add a caption {you could mention the day and the prompt in the caption}, add the hashtag #FMSphotoaday and then publish.

+ check out the #fmsphotoaday hashtag to see all the other photos. Like them. Comment on them. Be part of the community.

+ Each day a Fab Four is picked from the photos shared on Instagram for the challenge. It’s four photos that have captured my attention from each prompt. Check my feed {@fatmumslim} to see the photos.

How to play on Facebook

+ check out the photo a day list for the daily prompt
+ use your phone or camera to take a photo using the prompt as inspiration
+ upload the photo to Facebook – you can either share on your personal page, on your business page {if you have one} or in our Facebook Photo A Day group {you’ll be added within 12 hours of requesting}, add a caption {you could mention the day and the prompt in the caption} and then publish.

+ check out the photos shared in the group, or among your friends. Comment, like and be part of the photo-taking community.

+ Each day a Fab Four is picked from the photos shared in our Facebook group for the challenge by our lovely admin team. It’s four photos that have captured my attention from each prompt. The photos are made into a collage, shared and pinned to the top of the group.

How to remember what the prompts are

+ If you’re a lucky iPhone or iPad owner, you can use the Little Moments App to remind you of what the prompts are, as well as make your photos a bit fancy. You can grab the App here.
+ For all devices and PC, we upload the prompts which you can download automatically into your phone or PC calendar. For Smartphones & Mac Calendar, click here. For HTML for web viewing, click here.
+ You can also print out the list, save it as your screensaver or save it to your camera roll. Whatever works for you.

And that’s it. Jump on board and play along with us. I hope you love the new changes. Let’s get creative together. x

7 reasons to play Photo A Day

  1. great idea … i always get a couple of weeks into a month and fade off hopefully this will keep me on board. any word on the little moments app being released to android anytime soon???

      • I would really love it if you got it on Android, then I could be able to participate in Photo-a-Day (I can’t have a Facebook or IG, and I don’t have an Apple device).

        • I think you’d still need to have instagram or facebook to participate. The app helps you to edit photos and remember the prompts, but you need FB or insta to share your photos 🙂

      • Well I am a little confused.. Do I do it on Face Book, or instagram? I am reading how to do it! I suppose I can do both right? I am thinking I will post on Face Book, because I am going to share on my own wall as well. I just started using instagram, and still learning that one too. I just got out of Bed Rock as my 15 year old says… I mostly take pictures with my beloved trusty Canon Camera! And upload on the laptop. I am looking forward to this. I love looking at everyones pictures. And I am enjoying your site and Blog. I am from Wisconsin USA btw.

  2. Loving this Chantelle! I have struggled to complete a month so hoping the weekly thing will keep me on track. Hope you are having a superb time over the festive season with your fam. Wishing you everything your heart desires in 2015 xo

  3. This is so exciting! I know it’s really no different that just breaking down the monthly prompts into weeks but somehow it seems much more manageable..? I think I’ll print off your prompts too! xx

  4. Sounds good. I signed up on fb. Maybe you could design an app for android phones. I would rather use the app bc im on mine all the time, but im an android yser.

  5. I live in Nebraska, my parents live in Florida (both in the US) and the Photo-a-Day helps keep us all connected. My mom loves to see what my two kids and I are up to and this lets her feel like she is involved in our lives. We already share our photos at the end of the week as we email them to each other on Fridays. Thank you for helping keep families closer together although (lots of) miles away. Have a “awesometastic” 2015. That’s my word for the year!

  6. It is time to play! I’ll be joining in, and starting my own Instagram this week…seriously. I’ve waited this long.

  7. I love the idea – I have only managed one full month, then keep jumping in and out. I’ll definitely manage weekly challenges sounds amazing. Thanks for keeping us inspired, all the best for 2015 Chantelle xx

  8. Aww I love this idea Chantelle!! I’ve always struggled with the month long commitment, only finishing maybe 3 times (and I’ve been playing along since the almost beginning, when the hashtag still had the month in front of photoaday!). I’m also looking forward to seeing 51 designers lend their special touch to the photo a day list. I’ve discovered so many cool designers and people through your lists!

  9. Oh. Apparently I’m one of the few not overly excited about the change. But I’ll still give it a try! However, getting the new list on Sunday/Monday seems such a short notice, especially if we go skiing or camping and may not have the best access to the net. Chantelle, please please, do you think you could possibly move announcing the weekly list to – at least – Saturday?
Thanks, (slightly embarrassed, because aware of how much work you already set ahead of you) Anna

  10. I was one of those with commitment issues with the monthly prompts… I’m LOVING this set up and can’t wait to tackle it in 2015! Whoop whoop!!!

  11. Love it! I want to try photo-a-day challenge for sooo long, but whole month always was so overwhelming ;D but week is perfect 😀 Now I feel like I can totally do that 😀

  12. I did my first challenge back in September, I wanted to join it again, but a whole months was too much for me. So…THANK YOU for going weekly 🙂

  13. How exciting!!! I have been doing this since 2012 and love this change! I got a Nikon D5200 and just got a new lens that I can’t wait to start the year with! I love the idea’s of the summer challenge as well as learning how to photograph. That’s the best part of 2015, learning and growing! 😀

  14. Oooh, this is exciting! I’ve wanted to do a photo a day challenge for a while now but have never found the time, so glad I discovered you blog! Looking forward to sharing my pics!

  15. Would have loved to of downloaded the app, but it requires iOS 7 or higher and I only have an iphone 3 so I need it to be 6 or under! :(.
Can you create a simpler version for us that have older phones, please? Thanks!
P.S… I love the weekly list idea!

    • Unfortunately we couldn’t justify the tens of thousands of developmental costs. I hope you get to upgrade soon. So glad to hear you love the weekly idea. 🙂

  16. Hi! I would to have a go at photography for a long time. I thought it could be a good resolution for the new year. A think photo a day is a good idea to improve my creativity and that’s how I found your blog. I can’t wait for this new experience.

  17. I was religious with your monthly prompts! I took some time away from electronics but I am back and can’t wait to see each weeks prompts! Already joined the FB group and downloaded the app! Happy New Year!

  18. Trying to sign up for the list to be emailed each week but it just keeps telling me that I’ve tried to use that email address too many times – first time I tried it. Could you please manually add me to your list? Love the idea of it going weekly, so much less daunting for people like me 🙂

  19. I’m another one who doesn’t like this change. Some of your prompts in the past have had us going on crazy adventures just to get that perfect photo to suit the prompt and that has been one of the things I have loved about this challenge. One of my favourites was planning a dolphin cruise on a day where the prompt was “landscape” – we (my kids play along too) took photos of the shoreline as we traveled down the river and got some really interesting shots. We had been on the cruise before and had only snapped photos of the few dolphins we saw and crazy shots of each other – never before had we considered taking photos of the place we had just left behind! We’ll still have crazy adventures, but I’ve always enjoyed looking at the month ahead and thinking “wow, we could go to xxx and get some great shots for that prompt!”

    • Thanks so much for your feedback. We’ll see how we go for the first month, and then we could always reveal the prompts a month in advance via the downloads.

Let me just settle into the New Year and the new format first. Thanks for your patience. x

      • Thanks for seeing that comment for what it was, Chantel – just feedback! I definitely didn’t mean for it to sound negative and I forgot to mention how much I appreciate the effort that you put into all of this. I love the prompts, they certainly get me thinking and taking more photos and experiencing new things. I’ll still play along no matter how you decide to do it!

        • That’s OK. I read it as negative and was slightly offended, but I’m learning to be thick-skinned. I can’t please everyone, and I’d have to be crazy to try.

Call me crazy though, cos I do try.

Ha! Have a good first week and hopefully being spontaneous is fun for you too in the meantime. x

  20. That’s great news to me so thank you, Chantelle! I never ‘officially’ joined but still played along posting a week’s worth of pictures on my blog every now and then. The weekly schedule works a lot better because yes, a whole month can admittedly feel like too much of a commitment to me. I missed the first day but will make a note to take a picture of something yellow tomorrow.

  21. I think I’m gonna like the change. The monthly list was quite a lot and weekly is easier for me to keep the discipline to take a picture. Last year I found this website and the idea to try this really made me happy, so in January 2014 I decided to just try a 365 days photo project (never thought I would stick to it till the end) but every month I looked forward to a new list and I finished the whole year!
Last year was a bit difficult for me. I didn’t really know my place in this world and almost lost all fun in life.
When I discovered this, suddenly I became so exhited! I’ve had so much fun taking the pictures that I’m just gonna keep doing this. It’s also very relaxing to do, just think about you and your camera and nothing else. So thank you for having the amazing idea to start something like this, because I like the surprise of the next challenge every time there’s a new list and it has made me a lot more happy to have a purpose and something to look forward to.
I love this project and in 2015 I’m gonna keep following your lists and taking pictures. Something yellow tomorrow 😉 Happy new year!
