A collaboration between Steggles and Fat Mum Slim.FREE printable conversation cards | Chicken tacos recipeHow are your school holidays going?

Ours are noisy, chaotic and fun. And messy! I imagine that homes all around Australia are experiencing the same kind of chaos. Lacey got an old school game of UNO so we’ve been spending nights playing cards before bedtime, and I love watching Lacey try to be strategic. She wins against us, a lot.

One of the things that I love about school holidays, is that we don’t have the routine of school time. Bed times can be stretched a little further, family time together is maximised and everyone seems happier. Do you agree?

As well as the new card routine we’ve added to our nights, another little tradition we have as a family, and it’s one we’ve been doing for a while now, is asking each other, “What’s your favourite thing today?” It’s all about reflecting and gratitude. I love this, and I love that it’s so ingrained in the girls, especially Lulu because she’s been doing it before she was 2 years old.

These holidays I wanted to mix it up a little, and add more to the dinner time conversation… so I made a printable {oh you know how I love a printable!}. I’ve created a whole heap of sweet conversation starters that you can bring out at dinner time, and start the conversation with your family.

Try it out. Turn off the TV and get chatting. I know it can seem odd at first, but before long the conversation is flowing, the kids are laughing and you’re creating awesome memories. It’s good stuff.

We had a play while eating the girls’ favourite dinner; tacos. This time I made soft chicken tacos. These are so so yummy. And you can make them more adult by adding in a beautiful avocado guacamole with coriander and some chilli, or eat them just as the recipe below suggests.

1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
350g cooked chicken {we used leftovers from a Steggles roast chicken}

125g can corn kernels, drained and rinsed
1 teaspoon Mexican chilli powder
12 small soft wraps
1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
1/2 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup low-fat grated tasty cheese

METHOD
♥ Spray a frying pan with cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook for 2 minutes until softened. Add chicken, canned tomatoes, beans, corn, and chilli powder and cook through until chicken is warm {around 5 minutes}. Reduce to low heat and continue to cook for 10 minutes.
♥ Heat soft wraps in the microwave or oven, as the pack suggests.
♥ Serve up the chicken mixture onto the wraps, and add salad as you please.

Steggles is all about quality, including encouraging family time together. They know how stressful our lives can be, and want to make life easier and more fun for us, so that we can make more time for quality family time. Like hanging out over dinner and chatting. The good stuff.

They’re also running a competition, asking you guys to share a photo of your own family school holiday quality time to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtags #stegglerfor and #qualitytime. I have 10 Hoyts family passes up for grabs for 10 winners so that you can sit back and relax as a family and enjoy a movie over the school holidays. Head over to Instagram or Twitter and share a photo today.

So, I’ve shared that I love chatting about things that have happened over the day and playing UNO with my girls. How do you like to spend your quality family time? What do you guys get up to?

  1. Once a week we have ‘picnic night’ and take the children somewhere different, park or beach, take the frisbee and balls and play and walk. I pack a picnic dinner and we have a great time sharing. The kids love it and can’t wait to see where we take them next. In winter it is movie night as it is too cold and dark to be outside.

  2. I love uno too!! I often declare it ‘board game day’ and we literally play everything in the games cupboard. Winters are loooong in canberra and this passes the day super fast when it’s too cold to play outside.

  3. To be honest we feel like we are a struggling in this area, the girls are off to prep and we have been trying to make the mist of our time before the big shift to school routine happens. So we go for a hike ride after dinner, or choose a Disney movie and all watch together or another favourite is just getting in the back yard and having a game of cricke. And this week we had our first to free night in ages. I going to use the printable fore sure nothing like a happy family
