Before my very first trip to Bali, I was terrified of getting Bali Belly. I’d heard all the horror stories – people spending days hugging the toilet instead of enjoying their holiday – and I honestly thought it would ruin the whole trip.
But now? I’ve been to Bali more times than I can count on both hands, and I don’t stress anymore. I’ve found a rhythm that works for me and my family – a few easy habits we follow without going overboard. It’s made all the difference.
So if you’re off to Bali and want to feel confident (and not queasy!), this guide is for you.
What is Bali Belly?
“Bali Belly” is the nickname for traveller’s diarrhoea that some people get when visiting Bali. It’s most often caused by bacteria from contaminated food or water — and can really throw a spanner in your holiday plans. 😬
What are the symptoms
The symptoms can hit quickly and usually include:
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Diarrhoea (often watery)
- Bloating and gas
- Fever and chills
- Fatigue and dehydration
Basically, your stomach decides it wants to ruin your day.
Is Bali Belly contagious?
Short answer: yes, it can be. Bali Belly is usually caused by bacteria or viruses, and it can spread through poor hygiene (like not washing hands properly). So if someone gets it in your travel group, be extra careful with hygiene – lots of hand washing, no sharing drinks, that kind of thing.
How long does it last?
It really depends. For most people, it passes within 24 to 72 hours. If it lingers longer or symptoms are really intense, it’s worth seeing a local doctor (which, I promise, is easier than it sounds – more on that below!).
How I actually avoid Bali Belly (and still enjoy my trip) 💛
Let’s be real – I’m not packing Dettol spray and eating only toast for two weeks. I still want to enjoy my trip, eat the delicious food, and not overthink every bite. These are the little things I do that keep me well without the stress.

✨ Antibacterial wipes
These live in my bag at all times. I get mine from Aldi for about $1.20. My mum got me onto them – she always has some in her handbag. Perfect for wiping hands before eating or giving a quick clean to a table.

✨ Hand sanitiser
Before meals, after shopping, post-GoJek ride… it takes two seconds. It’s a habit now, and it honestly saves so much drama. I love the Mask brand, because I like the spray and the scents (so good!).

✨ Probiotics before and during the trip
I start about two weeks before we fly and keep taking them daily while we’re away. I usually buy mine – this Life Space Broad Spectrum – from Chemist Warehouse. Next time, I’m trying SB Floractiv, which my doctor recommended for extra gut support.
✨ Avoid tap water
Don’t drink it and don’t brush your teeth with it. Most resorts and villas offer filtered drinking water, so you’re covered. That said… I’ve accidentally used tap water to brush my teeth and was totally fine – but it’s still better to avoid it where you can.
✨ Don’t stress about ice
If your drink has ice with a hole through the middle, it’s likely government-supplied and filtered. It’s considered safe – and I’ve never had an issue.
✨ Use a straw for cans
I always use a straw when drinking from cans, just in case. You never know how long they’ve been sitting around or how they were stored.
✨ Be picky with salads and meat
I skip raw fruit and salads from local warungs or markets (unless I really trust the place). Same goes for meat – I usually order vegetarian at smaller places and save the meat dishes for well-known cafes and resorts.
✨ Skip the street food (personal preference!)
Some people love it. I don’t risk it. I’d rather eat at a clean café than test my gut on a roadside satay stick. 😂
But what if you do get Bali Belly?
Yep, it’s happened to me (and every member of my family). It’s not fun… but it’s not the end of the world either.
We always call Dr Ari – he’s amazing and usually turns up at the villa within the hour. He gives you a needle (you barely feel it), some meds, and within 12 hours you’re usually feeling so much better. It’s even redeemable with travel insurance.

Bali Belly is definitely a thing – but it doesn’t have to ruin your holiday. With a few mindful habits and a relaxed mindset, you can explore, eat, and enjoy your trip without worrying too much. 🌴
