A chocolate dilemma

OK. I am going to start out by saying that it’s more than OK to roll your eyes reading this post. It’s a total chubby girl problem to have, especially with the stories that Eden has recently shared about her travels to Niger, and the starvation being experienced there. I’m rolling my own eyes.

But, we have too much chocolate in our house at this very moment. I’ve never seen so much chocolate. I grew up in a family of four chocolate-loving kids, and we never had any chocolate left after Easter Sunday. Never. And we used to envy the kids that had chocolate left over when school went back two weeks later. Actually, that was just me. I’d see those kids with Easter bunnies in their lunch boxes and I’d be all jealous and stuff.

But this Easter, we have too much. This morning I gathered all the chocolate hanging around and hid it from myself in a huuuge soup pot and placed it up high. There was still some left hanging around so I hid that in a cupboard I don’t use often. If I can’t see it, it’s not there right? Wrong. It’s there.

{Here’s the chocolate hiding in the pot}

I’ve been doing so well on this weight-loss thing, and this chocolate is driving me batty {or fatty}. Does the Easter Bunny do return visits to pick up excess chocolate? Should I toss it out? Or hide it at my Ma’s house for later use?

What would you do? Is there any Easter chocolate still hanging around at your house?

  1. I say hide it at Ma's house for later use. if i had that pot in my house, i would be sneaking little pieces (because when you only have little it doesn't count right?) throughout the day so safer option would be just have a chocolate-free-house.

  2. Better your situation than mine…I so want to Share it with the world but I promised I would not bitch about family on my Blog so I'll share with you… We always have too much chocolate and usually throw the remaining bits out of the freezer when doing the big clean out at Christmas..We always have a easter egg hunt…We always have an Easter Basket…We spent Easter with the in-laws…Long story short – the M-I-L PROMISED me there was heaps and heaps of chocolate…Easter Morning 1 bunny and 3 small eggs each..That's it..2 Billies crying 1 Billie didn't talk all day…AND she said to number 2 Billie – still an avid believer – that the big one got squashed in HER bag…so even more tears – what mum? No Easter Bunny????…The End..Sorry for dumping this on you – but I had to tell someone…

  3. CHUCK IT! I just tossed a bowl of Reeses peanut butter eggs in the trash. Not in the house trash, the big bin outside. If its there I will eat it! Thanks for sharing your weight loss journey.

  4. I had this problem last year and again this year. I have a big family and when everyone gives eggs and chocolate to me and my fiance it means there's A LOT of chocolate for just the two of us, too much!
So last year the fiance would take a bunny a day to work and crack it up in a bowl on the tea/staff room table, everyone else munches and bye bye goes the chocolate. I think I'm going to try that myself this year too.
    Lindt bunny anyone?

  5. I think I suffer the same problem as you (chocolate addict)… Hmm you could try freezing some of it. It doesn't taste all that chocolatey when you nibble on frozen chocolate (well…until it melts, but who has time for that when you want to scoff it down?!) and it's terrible for your teeth (plus it's also an out-of-sight-out-of-mind thing again). If you feel it's a self-control issue then to Ma's it should go!! Hippity-hop! Ha ha ha…

  6. Give it all away. Take it to work, or send it to someone else's work if you don't go into an office. You don't want that in your house driving you crazy. xxx

  7. We've got so much too!!! It's crazy! However, as a chocoholic I can not bring myself to chuck it away lol. So, I'm just being a pig for the next few days/weeks and eating my heart out. I know I'll complain later when my baby fat still sits dormant on me and my skin breaks out badly in pimples….but I'll deal with those emotions then haaa. For now….it's choc-fest here 🙂 {I'm eating a Humpty Dumpty egg as I type this….so there's a chance I'm sugar buzzed & may have a change of heart in this topic tomorrow morning with my sugar hangover LOL!}
Maybe do yourself a deal Chantelle…..chuck some, share some & ENJOY some. xx

  8. No chocolate hanging around at our house – although I'm pretty sure that my kids would gratefully take your excess off your hands!

  9. The last couple of years I have put any excess in the freezer, then used it to make fudge for the Kindy/School fete. It's a win all the way – you don't eat the chocolate, you don't have to buy chocolate and it doesn't go to waste or waist!
If you haven't got a fete to cook for, save it to make fudge (or anything chocolate) for a party or gifts.

  10. Ι usually save it to use later in patisserie.
I then melt it over a cake or break it to little pieces for inside the batter before baking.

  11. Seriously, just throw it out.

I wrote a blog post yesterday about why I chose a sugar free Easter. Watching the video in that post should be enough to get you interested in researching why sugar is soooo bad for you. Essentially it is killing us and our kids – sounds harsh but it's true! 🙁

Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it 🙂

  12. As a college student there was no candy in my apartment this year, so feel free to send it all my way and I'll be more than happy to…um…”dispose” of it for you. 😉

  13. I am sure that there is someone or somewhere that can benefit from some chocolate. Got any “get together” happening soon? Going to a friends' place where you can take it?
As much as I understand your dilemma it seems so bad to just throw perfectly good chocolate in the bin! It's like throwing food away..
And no rolling of eyes here, there are many of us who understand totally your problem.

  14. I would use it to bake it into something. Hubby and daughter both don't eat chocolate in our household which means – oh no – I have no one else to blame but my pregnant self for the chocolate consumption which has occurred over Easter lol

  15. We have the opposite problem in our house!
Our chocolate is missing. We bought a bit to share with our daughter but the box is now empty and it is nowhere to be seen. Miss almost-3 did not eat it all, nor did we. Suspect it got animal-eaten – oops!

  16. I still have two baskets full and a plastic bag brimming with lunch box goodies for the next month! I think I over-did it in the chocolate department just because I knew I wouldn't be eating any…

  17. Sadly i threw it out there that after what the Easter bunny brought me last year this year i wanted chocolate and lots of it but alas the purse strings stretched just far enough to bring a chocolate bunny and a bargain dvd to my son and he had an egg from his grandma and godmother and that was it…I have been having serious withdrawels from chocolate eggs which is silly when you think it's a bar of chocolate with a hollow center. But i am greatful for what Easter brought this year, hurt free and happy 🙂

  18. The same for me! I hid the chocolate although I like it so much when there is something on the living room table. It just looks good. But I know myself and I am as well on that weight-loosing thing at the moment that I need to hide the chocolate. So I did yesterday. Buts its still calling my name … . And I have to work at homeoffice at the moment – not sure if there is some candy left after that week. You know I am counting points and I have at least half of my daily points for chocolate. I mean I am happy that I am still counting points but I know already that my weekly budget will overflow. But happy to know that I am not the only one in the world with that problem. Needless to say that I am more then ashamed thinking about hungry people.

  19. We didn't do much this year…just one egg for my 2.5 yr old and that was it! Hubby and I decided no eggs for one another, not necessary. I do regret the decision some nights when I have nothing to eat with my cup of tea!!! Maybe do an egg giveaway to your readers!!! ha ha!!!!

  20. LOL! Such a first world problem, hey? Send it off to your nearest children's hospital or give it away at work. Don't ruin your weight loss efforts on the Easter bunny. You're not worth it 😉 hugs , xx

  21. Oh I'm hearing you loud and clear! I was doing so well with my weight loss (14 kilos in 9 weeks) then Easter hit and it hit hard in this house!
I made the decision to throw the rest out, my kids teeth don't need it and neither to my hips!

Don't let yourself down, throw it out 🙂

  22. There is still chocolate in our house – mainly because I am on a really restricted eating plan and I am keeping it until I can maintain my weight – then I am going to eat it a little piece at a time !!! Generally we have easter chocolate in June or July !!!! When we remember it is there, we eat it.
Sorry – no help at all. There are eggs at work still – I wish someone would hide the jar to make it easier for me to stay away !!

  23. same here. Could keep them all and give them, say one or two eggs a day after school but I don't trust myelf with all the choco. I've already overindulged in it! I think I might take some to my workplace tomorrow; I'm a teacher so I can plan activities with choco prizes for my teenage students or just leave the choco eggs in the teachers' room and they will magically be gone by midday!

  24. Are you committed to this food? Will it nourish your body? I think NOT! Chuck it!!! Okay so I am not chucking mine. I may have even bought more on sale today.I had to replace the children's chocolate I already ate. One child had nothing left by the day after Easter. Another of mine has all but one egg left.

  25. Hide it, and give yourself and your kids a piece for reward / treat once a day or every few days. One little piece a day won't hurt your diet 🙂

My dad used to take our excess candy from holidays and keep it hidden, then every evening he'd bring it out and we were all allowed to pick out one or two pieces and that's it.

If you really can't handle it, give it away! Don't toss out perfectly good candy 🙂 My coworkers bring in excess candy to share at work 🙂

  26. I'm having the SAME problem.

I made the BF hide my candy and we're trying to come up with interesting ways to use it, slowly, as treats for the next FEW MONTHS instead of few days.

We go to the local frozen yogurt place a lot, and get a bunch of candy for toppings. So that's one thing we can do — just use the candy we already have. Another thing I'm planning to do is chop up a bunch of it and make cookies to take to work and to send to my dad and grandpa back home. I think I'm STILL going to have leftover after that.

If you're still finding yourself eating a bunch of candy, chuck it. Or see if you can donate it to somewhere that needs it … not sure if homeless shelters will take it, but that might be a nice pick-me-up to somebody who's got a lot less than we do.

  27. Toss it – I had to toss extra candy because I just cannot leave it alone. I tried hiding it in a cupboard, putting in the freezer. I eat it. I agree with the previous poster – a homeless shelter might enjoy having it.

  28. I use to babysit for a woman who didn't like Halloween and would make her daughter take all the candy she got from trick or treating to a a kid oriented charity? She did get to keep 5 pieces for herself, so maybe you can save some and give the rest of other kids 🙂

  29. Haha…so true! I always put everything into a bag and my husband has to take it away. He stores it at work and from time to time I get one little surprise…works perfect!

  30. There are a couple of things I would like to say. First, I like the idea of giving it away, the chocolate is still enjoyed and not by you. Second I wanted to say that I recently started following you on instagram, I need to thank you for the photo a day challenge. I love it! Also third and lastly, do you have a photo journal of your weight loss as I am beginning that journey for myself and would like some ideas and motivation.. Thanks again, Ldylisa

  31. Theres loads in our house as well 🙁 I try so hard to resist temptation but cant seem to do so so have been sending it all with my husband and have told him even if he doesnt eat it not to bring it back inside the house. :p

  32. Oh, first-world-problems are so hard! However, I'd eat the Kinder bunnies and toss the rest. Or better yet – make some sort of cookies!

  33. I specifically make it a point to buy candy for my son that he likes, but that I don't like, so that I am less tempted to eat it. The only exception is a Cadbury creme egg. I will buy myself one of those.

Usually, this trick will work unless I go on a sweet rampage, which has been known to happen from time to time.

I am also not a chocoholic so the chocolate doesn't have much of a hold on me – but the jelly beans?! Oh, yes, they have a gravitational pull 🙂

  34. Toss it, NOW!!!!! Seriously. Toss it. Put it in the garbage can, pour something yucky on it, and be done with it. I'm just a girl trying to maintain whats left of my waist, offering some tough love. 🙂 Donating it would be great, but really, no one needs it. That's the truth. Toss It!

  35. you should post the cadburys stuff that's taunting me in Cadbury-free-Spain to me 😉 Could you give it away to anyone near you though? It seems a shame to throw it away, but I know how tempting it would be for me to have it sat there too! A playgroup or friends or something?!

  36. Yes, as I am reading this I am eating a Leonidas chocolate. I got a big box plus Kinder chocolate. Maybe you could make a chocolate mousse and invite friends around for a treat?

  37. There is way too much chocolate left at my house!! I tell myself it belongs to my girls and I can't eat it!! it's worked so far but I'm not sure how much longer I will hold out LOL :/

  38. I have to read all the comments cause this is one HOT topic

We have too much chocolate leftover too! When I'm feeling the urge, I take a bite and toss the rest in the compost with the gross garbage…if I need more I do it again…gets rid of it faster!

  39. Hi! I too am dieting and feel for you! We divide alot of it up & place it in a baggie for each child with their name on it. That way I feel guilty if Im stealing candy from my kids! :). We toss some too. Everyday I will put a small piece in their lunch to help it go away too. Hopeyou are able to find a solution that works for you!

  40. eat it all now!!! or give it away – don't stash it away… I did that last year and well, I still have chocolate leftover from last Easter!
hmmm, I wonder – how long does chocolate keep?

  41. DO NOT THROW IT OUT!!!!!

Divide it up so you have a small amount each day, still watch what you eat and still get some choccie, and for the love of God, make sure it isn't melting or going off.

  42. We have the same problem in our house. Hubby and I were doing so well on our New Years Diets (I'm down 11kgs WOOO HOOO!!) but then Easter arrives and we get bombarded with Chocolate… Our kids are 1 and nearly 3 and I don't like them eating tonnes of chocolate, but they get given so much… I have stashed it away and when little man asks for an egg he can have one, but at this rate it will last well past next easter…
Let me know when you come up with a solution 🙂

  43. What I do is eat enough to make me feel sick and then throw out the rest or send it to work with my husband so his colleagues can eat it and get the extra calories!

  44. Like another commenter's Dad I put treats away and if my 3 yo goes down for his nap without a fuss he gets to choose a treat when he wakes – before we go to the park & run the sugar out. I'm hoping to teach him moderation because I don't have that control – unless they're in his treat box and I somehow manage to never raid. I threw out the last of last years eggs this week.

We have more chocolate left than that – and will double it again after Greek&Ukrainian Easter both of which we celebrate this weekend.

    Too many Aunties & Uncles!

  45. with four of our boys here and all of them with sweet tooths we didnt have any chocolat left..which was a huge bummer as I really felt like some today!! You could bag it up and give it away…happily take some 🙂

  46. If you don't want to eat it now, do you think you might want to eat it later? If not…chuck it. Do it! That Easter chocolate doesn't last that long anyway, because it's out in the shops so darn early!

  47. I've done so well this easter. I've lost 12 Kgs since January and was determined not to ruin all my hard work. I do have the sugarless chocolate on hand and have a little each night to satisfy and prevent a blow out. I haven't had an egg at all. We have so much of it in the house leftover as the kids were given a ridiculous amount, about 4 Kg of choc each, I came home with a suitcase, yes you read that right! My 2 older kids are completely overwhelmed and can only see how crazy unhealthy it is. Any left next week will be going to school with me to give to many kids who probably didn't get any at all at easter. Otherwise- if my kids protest, I will peel it all and cut it up , put in the bags in the freezer in ready to bake amounts just like choc chips.

  48. I have no idea if someone has already suggested this, but take it to a local soup kitchen and they will hand it out to the homeless.
Usually these places are more than happy to accept donated food items. I work in the catering business and these sorts of charities LOVE receiving excess food to hand out (as long as it is not too old, but as Easter wasn't that long ago it should be fine)

Altnernatively, use it in cooking! Easter eggs are usually made of cheaper chocolate anyway (The same as cooking chocolate. Yes, even the Cadbury stuff!)
It would be such an awful waste of money and food just to throw it in the bin!
