Discover this delicious twist on a traditional favourite, the chocolate banana bread recipe. But first, a story,
I have a confession to make. I left my love in Sydney. His name is Bill. Bill Granger.
I’m not sure how popular Bill is beyond my own immediate environment, so if you don’t know him… well you really should make an effort to. Or at least his recipes. The guy knows how to cook. He has a few cafes scattered throughout Sydney and they make the best ricotta hotcakes, corn fritters and scrambled eggs. Oh and coconut bread. The guy knows how to cook. Oh, I said that already.
A few times a year, when we lived in Sydney, we’d head to Bills for hotcakes/fritters/scrambled eggs, and they never disappointed. One time while we were eating the hotcakes/fritters/scrambled eggs Bill arrived at the cafe and came to talk to us. I was starstruck. It was Bill! AT Bills.
Thankfully, now that we’ve moved away, I still have most of Bill’s cookbooks… so I’m not without his scrumptious goodies. I’ve made this banana bread recipe many, many times and it never disappoints. At first I thought it was weird to pair chocolate and banana bread. But once I tried it, I was disappointed that I hadn’t for all those banana-bread-making years.
Chocolate Banana Bread
PrintChocolate banana bread
Ingredients
2 cups of plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
123 grams unsalted butter, softened
1 cup caster sugar
4 ripe bananas, mashed
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celcius. Prepare a loaf tin, by lining it with baking paper.
2. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl.
3. In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, butter, bananas, eggs and vanilla. Once combined, add the dry ingredients and mix to combine. Don’t over mix.
4. Add the chocolate chips. You have permission to steal one and gobble it up.
5. Pour the batter into the loaf tin and bake for an hour and 15 minutes. Or until the bread is tested with a skewer.
6. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes and then turn onto a wire rack to cool. Serve with butter {and icing sugar if you’re that way inclined}.
Sounds amazing!! Will definately try this out next week. Thank you for sharing!
ps I’ve pinned it… pinaholic here!
i havent tried this one, but each christmas eve for the past 5 years i have made the Apple Dried Cherry and Almond Loaf, we either have it for christmas breakfast or boxing day, heated in the oven, toaster, or even one year on the BBQ.
http://www.lifestylefood.com.au/recipes/1598/apple-dried-cherry-and-almond-loaf it has become a family tradition to cook together while watching the Carols by Candlelight.
Definately will be trying this one.
Bill was quite a hit in the uk before we left for Canada and I just love his laid back family style!
Ahhhh Bill! Yes now you mention it, I haven’t seen him for a while. We have quite a few Aussie imports on British TV and I must say he’s a good one. I love his naturally cheery style. The camera shots are always nice and sunny, and he’s just a charming and relaxed personality it seems.
Nice cake you’ve chosen there. I don’t have any of his books but this looks like a good starting point đŸ™‚
Best banana bread recipe ever – LOVE Bill. I use it all the time and you can easily substitute other ingredients for bananas and chocolate. Pecans and dates is my favourite so far…
Yum, must try this one. I’m a big Bill fan too. His books
are my first stop along with another Aussie, Jill Dupleix. His recipes are not
over complicated so easily achievable at the end of a long day. I do find
though that the things I’ve tried have either been a big hit, to be made again
and again or they really miss the mark. There doesn’t seem to be anything
in-between for me! I HAD to visit his Surry Hills restaurant when in Sydney
but have yet to try his new one in London.
Must do soon!
We make this all the time, using frozen bananas. I also replace the chocolate with shredded coconut if I don’t feel like chocolate.
My youngest daughters favourite. We make banana bread quite often. Although I never eat it. I am funny like that I rarely eat cakes or biscuits that I cook.
Sounds heavenly!!!
I love Bill G.!!! I was gifted a cook book of his and my Favourite recepie is the Choc chip banana bread recepie! lol…I love his receipes (well at least from the book I got), they all look so nice and light…Once I get my cooking mojo back I intend to be using a lot of his goodies in the meal plan… Yummo!
I know I have 4 amazing banana bread recipes already, but surely I need one more if it happens to be,this one!
I am in love with Bill’s. Every time I fly back to Sydney, it’s always on top of my to-do list. If I don’t get my once a year ricotta hotcake fill, I get cranky.
I think I’ll have a go at this on the weekend as I have some bananas to get rid of – was thinking of doing normal banana bread but now I’ve seen this……it has to be done!
Just made it, smells so good. Can’t wait to dig into it.
I am going to HAVE to try this…banana and chocolate are made for each other! Thanks for sharing Chantelle! :o)
I am going to let my bananas go really ripe now just to give this recipe a try.
This looks so good and I’ve just searched for Bill’s coconut bread recipe too that you mentioned. I always love the look of banana bread, but for some reason don’t enjoy cooked banana. I’m definitely going to try the coconut bread and I might add chocolate chips to that one!xo
I love Donna Hay, her cooking is very simple but so delicious, also Kylie Kwong, love her Asian cuisine!
I love Bill Granger! Telle – have you made his coconut loaf? Its my go-to for taking as a housewarming pressie and I usually get asked for the recipe. The secret is toasting it. And the corn fritters! Oh my! The corn fritters! I was devastated when I was in Oz earlier this year and we went to Bills and they wouldn’t serve the corn fritters because they had just switched to the lunch menu. Even when I begged and said I had come from the US. The waitress did try for us, no bother though, it just means I get to go again when I next come home.
Any cook is a good cook…but only because i can’t…might have to give this recipe a go..will let you know how it turns out.
This looks delicious!
YUMMY ~ two of my favorite foods together – perfect đŸ™‚
This is delicious,my kids will be asking me to make this on a regular basis now,a huge hit.
I make muffins out of this and they are amazing! I am trying to figure out how best to add peanut butter as I am more of a pb/banana person than a banana/chocolate person – any advice?
Would you freeze peanut butter in blobs and then add it in? I wonder if that would work.
