The perfect snack: A very hungry caterpillar

There’s one book that every house should have {well, houses containing children I mean!} and that book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It was on of my favourites as a child and has now become one of my daughter’s too.

This snack, using the book as inspiration, went down a treat in our house. Green apples are delicious at the moment, but if your kids {or you} aren’t green apple fans – use red.

Here’s how to make your own caterpillar treat:

Ingredients
1 green apple, cut into slices
1 Babybell cheese (from the dairy aisle)
1 fruit strap (from the health food aisle)

Method
1. Place the cheese onto the plate for the head.
2. Place the apple slices in a line to form the body. Leave one slice for the eyes.
3. Cut 6 little legs from the fruit strap using a small sharp knife. Place them underneath the body.
4. Cut a little smile for the face. Place onto the cheese.
5. Cut two small eyes from the apple slice. Place onto the cheese.

What was your favourite book as a child? Do you read it to your children now?

Note: Inspiration for this recipe was sourced from Cute Food For Kids.

Too cute. I have no idea what Fruit Strap is, but when I get Grandchildren I am so pulling out those favourite books and making the characters out of food. :-)
I think every house should have a copy of the Hungry Caterpillar whether there are children or not! :-) Still have our copy even though the “children” are long grown up – never know when we might need it! LOL. Still have all those wonderful classics actually – Snowman, Jolly Postman (all those sweet little envelopes and letters – to die for), Gruffalo, Each Peach, Pear, Plum, Dr Suess, Enid Blyton, Lewis Carroll, Awwww…. I still have most of their books…. you know where I’m coming from! :-) Jude.x

    Haa CUTE!!! I love this!

Would’ve been perfect for Ryder’s Very Hungry Caterpillar party for his 1st birthday last year :)

This book is definitely one of our faves here at our place. My favourite books as a kid were Roald Dahl….and I have LOVED reading them to Ella over the past 12months. She’s really into them too….which makes me happy :) ))

Such a great idea. I already have a copy of my childhood fave Animalia on the shelf in my baby’s room ready for when it arrives (any day now!). Thanks for the tip Chantelle.

Where is the Green Sheep? That’s pretty popular here, as is Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. :)

What a great idea? I remember reading this book to my son when he was younger. I’ll have to try that when I have my son’s friends over for playday.

As a new father to a recent addition to the family, we have accumulated many children’s books and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is a frequent read to our son before he goes to bed :)

I would love to make this for him, when he is older (which won’t be very long!)
