Mother’s Day Craft: Make a Thanks A Bunch Card

I have a favourite store in Sydney, Papier D’Amour, and if you’re a stationery lover you probably know about it already. It’s filled with quirky things that I can’t get enough of.Phoebe, the owner, introduced me to her daughter this week {well, via email but still the same}. It appears that Phoebe is raising another paper-lover and also very crafty kid named Tallulah. Today Tallulah is guest blogging her sweet craft idea here. Enjoy.Mother’s Day Craft: How To Make a Thanks A Bunch Card

Everyone knows that a gift is never complete without a card and this year I wanted to make something extra special for Mum. Mum loves flowers and paper (she does own a paper store after all) so I thought why not put the two together and make a pop up card that blooms like a big bouquet! I had so much fun playing with all the different colours. I can’t wait to give it to her next Sunday.

You will need:
Coloured paper and card, scissors, pencil, stanley knife, ruler, double sided tape

Step 1. Measure and cut a rectangle 13cm(h) by 26cm(w) on your coloured card – I’d use a nice bright colour that’s different to your flowers. Lightly score down the middle to make your square card.

Step 2. Measure and cut seven 10cm x 10cm pieces of paper. I’ve used four different colours for this – 2x duck egg blue, 2x wedgewood blue, 2x jeans blue,1x pacific blue (this makes the middle flower).

Step 3. Once you have your 10cm x 10cm squares cut out, fold your paper using the steps below. Repeat this process across all your seven squares.
1. Fold in half
2. Fold in half again to make a quarter
3. Fold one side to the other to make a triangle
4. Turn over and repeat step 3 (fold the remaining side to the other) to make the final triangle

Step 4. Using my template, cut out the large petal. Place the pointed end of the petal (where the folds meet) on your triangle, lightly trace around and cut out carefully. Make sure the top of the petal is facing the end where the folded ends are open – otherwise your flower will fall apart when you open it up!

Step 5. Unfold your cut petal to reveal your flower. Cut out one of the petals completely and tape one side to the other – this forms your flower cup shape.

Step 6. Fold your flower cups in half and lay out in the following order – it’s important to keep them as seen above, so that they bloom nicely when the card opens. Tape the top of your petals on one side as shown above.

Step 7. Following the order above, stick and stack the flower cups together. Use the top three flowers first, then middle, then bottom three (you can refer to step 6 if you forget the flower order). Your flower should look like a stacked flower with one of the petal segments missing.

Step 8. Now it’s time to stick your stacked flowers into your card. Using one side at a time, tape the top two outer petals (as shown above). Make sure the missing segment is facing the centre margin. Repeat on the other side and close.

Step 9. Now for the really fun part – open up your card and watch your bouquet bloom!

Step 10. It’s now time to decorate the front of your card. Repeat the flower cup making process (like we did at the start) using the large petal template. After you open up your flower shape cut in half – you can now make two flowers out of one! Fold around and stick with tape.

Step 11. To make the small flowers, repeat Step 11 but this time use the small petal template. After you fold in half and cut, this should make a four petal flower. Fold around and stick one petal to the other – make as many as you like! Finally the last thing left on the template is the message banner. Trace onto your coloured paper and tell Mum how much you love her! Happy Mother’s Day!
