I’ve always thought of stray coins as a sign of good luck. I say the little ditty: Find a penny pick it up, then all day you’ll have good luck.
Some days it’s harder to pick them up. I’ll have my hands full of groceries. Lacey in my arms. Most days I still pick them up. I can’t pass it by. Not because I need the money. I actually just put them in one of Lacey’s many piggy banks. I pick them up because they make me smile, they make me feel lucky and they remind me of my Nanna Rose.
A few years ago my Nanna Rose passed away. She suffered from dementia so I always thought that when she passed away she was in a better place and would return to her old happy self.
The morning that she died I was on my usual morning walk before hearing of her passing. It was a beautiful morning. I found so many coins. At least ten. And I don’t scour the streets for them. They just turn up in my path and I pick them up.
I thought of it as a little sign. When I thought back to the morning, I thought she was saying “I’m happy now. You be happy too.”
I’ve never told that to anyone before. It’s weird I know. But I’m weird in a quirky type way, and I’m okay with that. Quirky is good.
My family knows how I am with coins though. We have a lot of travellers from all over the world in Bondi. I feel extra lucky if I find a foreign coin, but if I find a real penny… then I feel lucky all week. It gives me a little high.
A few weeks back I was walking to my car to head out for the day. I found one penny. Another penny. And then another. All within metres of each other. All leading me to my car door.
I was beside myself. It was a miracle. Nanna Rose was really trying to tell me something. Luck was on it’s way. I felt a rush of happiness.
My little sister was with me and she saw the look of excitement on my face. She smiled.
Can you believe that I found three pennies right here in our own yard? I can’t believe it. I said.
She kept smiling her coy smile and then confessed. She had put them there. Just to make my day. She knew how happy they would make me.
And they did. xx
That’s so cute. My name is Penny and when I was young, I used to say I was lucky Penny, because I was a Penny with my head up…I don’t know if ya’ll consider it lucky to find one heads up, but we do. That was a cute little story.
That was a lovely story. Thanks for sharing 🙂
