How To Rock Instagram Like A Superstar: @jeffmindell
I don’t want to play favourites, but this interview might be my favourite yet of all the interviews I’ve done with amazing instagrammers. I love Jeff’s work. I think the way he plays with colours and whites is stunning. Read below to find out what apps he loves and how he makes magic with his photos.
Tell us a little about you.
I’m Jeff Mindell and I’m a photographer. I live in LA with my wife, Kelly.
How did you get into photography or photo-taking?
Hmm great question! I don’t really remember a time that I wasn’t interested in visuals. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been very hands-on creatively and I really found a passion in photography as I grew up. I think I first really took a deep dive into experimenting with composition and really finding my own aesthetic back in college. I shot for my university newspaper, brought a camera to London when I studied abroad, and even took on early clients before graduating and eventually moved to LA. I didn’t even realize until years later that I could make a living from this hobby of mine so I quit my job in 2015 to go full-time freelance and it’s the best decision I ever made.
What do you love taking photos of most?
I love to travel and photographing my everyday is something that I really have a lot of fun with. My audience really seems to enjoy keeping up with me when I’m on the go and those are the times that I love being behind the camera the most. The desert or a tropical environment is so much to shoot in and I also really love working with my wife. We collaborate a ton on creative projects and have a really easy rapport when it comes to shooting photos.
What are your favourite Apps for editing?
If I’m on the go and just have my phone with me, I’ll use Snapseed, A Color Story, VSCO and/or TouchReTouch for editing. A combination of these apps equip me with all the tools I need to create and edit beautiful images I will then push to my social channels. Otherwise if I’m on my desktop, I’m using Lightroom and Photoshop.
Can you share a recent favourite photo of yours – and take us through how you edited it?
I took this photo with my iPhone 6S Plus using the native camera. I then did an overall brightening in Snapseed following by a selective adjustment of all the blues to really saturate and bring out much more vibrant colors. Then I will bring the photo into A Color Story and apply a few of their amazing filters to make my white pop and even out my highlights and shadows. Lastly, I crop the photo in a little bit on the right side and cool the photo down within the Instagram app before posting.
