October Photo A Day 2014: Laura Blythman designs the list!

Well, I’m equal parts excited and nervous about revealing this October Photo A Day list to you today. Nervous because the prompts are something I’ve never tried before, but something I’ve wanted to do since launching photo a day so many moons ago.

And excited because one of my VERY favourite artists has designed the list this month and her name is Laura Blythman. She’s one of the most talented people I know. Maybe THE most. She just released a range of edible arty marshmallows {only Laura could do that, right?}.

And now onto the list… I think we need a drumroll. You can’t hear it but you totally know I’m playing on a toy drum with chopsticks right now, don’t you?

Isn’t it beautiful? Laura is so talented, isn’t she? I’ve been wanting to do this style of list for so long. I think of it like a bit of a treasure hunt, that we have to go about our day finding something starting with each letter. It’s such a great opportunity to get creative and have a little fun. Even the kids could play along, couldn’t they?

HOW TO PLAY PHOTO A DAY

Playing FMS Photo A Day is simple and fun, just take a daily photo and share it. Here’s a breakdown of how to play along:

♥ Grab your camera or phone or photo-taking-device.
♥ Look at the monthly list to find the prompt for the day. {The number corresponds to the date of the month}.
♥ Take a photo using the prompt as inspiration. So for October 1st, the prompt is ‘A is for…’ so just find something that starts with A, snap it and share it.
♥ Now you’ve taken a picture, it’s time to share it. This is the fun part. You can share to whichever social media platform you like, for me I like Facebook and Instagram best, oh and Twitter too. Make sure you add the hashtag #FMSphotoaday to your caption so people can find you, and others know what you’re doing.

If you’re sharing on Facebook, you might like to join our Facebook group. It’s a big, lovable community of photo-taking-people. Click here to find it.
♥ Now you’ve shared, check out other people’s photos. You can check out the #FMSphotoaday hashtag on Instagram or Twitter to find them all. OR look at the Facebook group. It’s nice to comment and get to know other photo-takers too. We’re a friendly bunch.

If you’re playing using my Little Moments App, it will add the hashtag and prompt automatically to your caption when sharing to Instagram.

WHERE TO PLAY

I’ve touched on this above, but there are loads of places for you to upload your photo-a-day photos. Here’s a bit more details:

Instagram: Just upload your photo, and add a caption and the hashtag #FMSphotoaday and then share.
Facebook: There are a few options here. You can simply share on your own personal page, among your own friends. Or you can upload to my page’s wall, or to the FMS Photo A Day Facebook group. You can join it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/FMSphotoaday/
Blog: If you have a blog, you could share each day or do a wrap up of all the photos at the end of the month.
Tumblr: Add your daily photos to your Tumblr feed.
Flickr: You can get their app and share your photos there, or upload on their web version. We also have a photo a day group here.
Twitter: You can share on Twitter by uploading the photo and sharing the hashtag #FMSphotoaday.

HOW TO REMEMBER THE PROMPTS EASILY

I know it can be hard for people to remember to do photo-a-day each day, particularly for those just starting out. It takes 21 days to form a habit, so stick at it. Until then we have have these tips:
The Little Moments App is the easiest way to remember how to play. It can send little daily reminders to your phone at the time of your choice. Or you can just open the App and get all the details in one click.

♥ The lovely Doug has created prompts for us that we can download straight into our calendar, so we won’t forget. Just click on the below to get them in your phone {the new prompts will be placed in the calendar before October 1st}.

WHAT’S THE FAB FOUR?

Each day I spend some time scrolling through the photos shared on Instagram and Facebook, selecting four from each platform to put a bit of a spotlight on. The Fab Four isn’t a competition. There is no prize. It’s just a way to share some of the awesome photos being shared for Photo A Day. The Instagram Fab Four will be shared in my Instagram feed daily, and will also be showcased in my App too.

Over on Facebook the lovely admins of the Facebook group select the Fab Four each day. You can find it pinned to the top of the group. The admins are Leesa, Barbara, Sarah, Kim and Natalie.

I hope you’ll play along with me. Tell me below, what do you think of the list?

  1. Love this idea and Laura’s work is amazing. I’ve never heard of her and it’s nice to meet another talented artist. Going to get stuck for October’s ABC prompts as I didn’t do much of September.

    • Yes sorry, there’s a little note above that says the prompts won’t be ready until October 1st. You calendar should automatically update once they’re added now though. x

  2. not only is this list BEAUTIFUL, but it’s just what I needed. in past years (!!!), I have faithfully played along daily. in the past few months, I admit I have fallen off the wagon. I feel like this list will help me get back on! thank you for mixing it up a bit! ♥

  3. This is a fantastic idea, what a great way to get into using my Canon 550D. I am on holiday the first two weeks of October so will carry my camera with me and hopefully get some great photos to share 🙂

  4. Just found this site and am super duper excited to start!!!!!! Personal projects after the monotony of contracts will be inspiring!!!Question: what if we take a “g” picture also on a “b” day? Can we save it to use on day “g” or is it mandatory only take the pic for the day on the day?
