Beauty at home: Make your own products from honey, olive oil & baking soda

medium_4590595406Hello! Today I have the ever-so-lovely bellaMUMMA {aka Nikki} guest posting on the topic that she’s the expert at: beauty. She’s sharing sweet advice on how you can turn simple kitchen ingredients into beauty-full ‘super-cheap’ products. Enjoy. xx

Make your own beauty products

Four amazing uses for baking soda:

As a Clarifying Shampoo:

Mix 2 teaspoons baking soda with 1 cup water and use as a final rinse after shampooing.
As a Facial Cleanser: Mix 1/2 teaspoon with your favourite cleanser for extra exfoliating (no need to buy a separate scrub!). This is fine for all skin types to do weekly, but dry skin may need to follow up with a rich moisturiser.
As a Foot Powder: Sprinkle some baking soda into your workout shoes for stink-free and sweat-free feet.
As a Teeth Whitener: It has a salty taste but baking soda is a classic tooth cleanser and whitener — sprinkle on a damp toothbrush and brush as normal.

Beauty-full honey:

As a Hair Conditioner:

Massage 1 tablespoon of pure honey into damp hair after shampooing and then rinse out with warm water. Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and holds moisture in your hair.
As a Bubble Bath Substitute: Mix together 1 cup water, 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup liquid soap, pour into a warm bath under the running water.
As a Facial Mask: Honey is perfect for healing acne-prone or dry skin, spread on clean skin and let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Honey is a powerful antioxidant and also has antibacterial properties, making it good for breakouts.

Multi-tasking olive oil:

As an Exfoliator:

If dry and scaly skin is a problem, mix olive oil and sea salt in a rub and massage it into the affected area to slough off dead skin and enrich the healthy layer beneath it.
As a Bath Oil: Add a few tablespoons of olive oil with a drop or two of lavender essential oil in a bath. This is a luxurious way to relax, soothe and moisturise the whole body.
As a Nail and Cuticle Treatment:
Extra virgin olive oil makes the perfect, simple solution for dry nails and cuticles. Simply rub a few drops into the cuticle area and around the nail. Cuticles stay plump and moist, and nails will take on a natural shine.
As an Eye Makeup Remover:
Just a drop or two of extra virgin olive oil on a cotton pad is all it takes to gently and effectively remove eye makeup without irritating the delicate skin around the eye area. Plus, when you use it consistently, olive oil can soften the skin around the eyes and smooth out wrinkles.
As a Hair Treatment: When used on hair and scalp, olive oil can be two products: a deep conditioner and a dandruff controller. After shampooing, massage a mixture of equal amounts of olive oil and water into your hair. Leave on for 5 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. Your scalp will benefit from healthy conditioning and your hair will become shiny and stronger.

I love the eye make-up remover tip! Which will you try?

  1. Thank you for the great suggestions. I was watching something with David Wolfe in it and he was saying the only cosmetic (for want of a better word) his grandma used was baking soda.

  2. I also use sweet almond oil or coconut oil as a cleanser, much cheaper than buying Dermalogica’s preclenase and it does the same job, great tips ,thankyou 🙂

  3. I want to try it on the eyes too… definitely trying the baking soda on the teeth! … I’ve used coconut oil on my cuticles & that’s awesome
