Trying on jeans so you don’t have to

Let’s be real—jeans in winter are a staple here in Australia. Whether you’re braving chilly school drop-offs, chasing a bit of sunshine at the farmers’ market, or just needing something comfy for couch-to-café transitions, good denim is essential, especially in the cooler months.

But if you’re plus-size like me, finding jeans that actually fit well and feel good can be a full-time job. Waistbands that roll, thighs that cling, and pockets that are more decorative than functional. Sound familiar?

So, I lined up five different styles of plus-size jeans from Taking Shape to see which ones might earn a spot in my winter rotation. Same brand, different vibes—and yes, I took photos. Some surprised me. Some surprised me more than others.

Before we jump into the try-on diary, here are a few things I always keep in mind when denim shopping, especially when it’s getting cooler.

Tips for buying plus size denim

1. Prioritise comfort without sacrificing shape.
The colder months are all about layering and comfort ~ but you still want jeans that hold their structure and don’t lose shape by lunchtime.

2. Fabric matters.
Look for denim with a hint of stretch (1–3% elastane) so they move with you, but don’t sag. Some styles even use “comfort stretch” denim designed for more movement.

3. Mid vs. high rise? Think about your layering.
A higher rise can be great under a knit or longline cardi, especially when the wind hits. But too high, and it’s an awkward tuck situation. Personally I like a bit of coverage around my tummy.

4. Go for a darker wash.
They pair better with winter layers, boots, and jackets ~ and they’re more forgiving when you spill coffee on yourself at 8am. Sound familiar?

5. Pockets that do something.
Just because we’re curvy doesn’t mean we want tiny, fake pockets. I always check if they’re functional (especially for phones or cold hands).

The Try-On Diary: 5 pairs, 5 reactions

Here’s how I broke it down: I gave each pair a nickname (because why not?), took a quick snap, and rated them on fit, comfort, and that magic “would I reach for these again?” factor.

Pair one: The ‘are they even jeans’ jeans?

I’ve always thought people who wear jeans at home were a little bit mad. Like—surely that’s not comfortable? There are pyjamas for a reason.

But I’ve officially been proven wrong. Not all jeans are created equal, because then I met these.

Loved these Organic Wide Leg Jeans so much during the try-on that… I just didn’t take them off. I mean, I did eventually, at night—but honestly, I could’ve slept in them.

What’s to love?

  • Super soft
  • Light, but not too flimsy
  • Flattering silhouette
  • Actually stylish enough to wear out, even if you’re just headed to Woolies

Pair two: Light-as-a-cloud jogger jeans

Jogger jeans are perfect for those days when you really just want to wear trackies—but life demands you look somewhat presentable. You know the days.

These ones are fun. I’m not saying I’d actually go jogging in them (who am I kidding, I don’t jog), but they’re so lightweight you could easily smash out a marathon school run, de-pile the laundry, and tick off all the mum duties—without even feeling like you’re wearing proper pants.

What’s to love?

  • Once again: super soft
  • Genuinely feels like you’re wearing trackies
  • Easy, fun style for busy days on the go

Pair three: Ahoy there, sailor ⚓️

As soon as I saw these Wide Leg Sailor Jeans on the model, I knew I had to have them. The deep, dark denim? Stunning. The wide-leg cut? Chef’s kiss. And don’t even get me started on those sweet gold buttons on the pockets—they had me at hello.

These jeans are a little bit nautical, a little bit fancy, and a whole lot of yes please. They’re perfect for when you want to look like you’ve put in effort (but really just pulled on a comfy pair of jeans and a nice top).

They feel luxe but not fussy—and they somehow make every outfit feel elevated without crossing into “trying too hard” territory.

What’s to love?

  • It has to be said again: the comfort. So, so soft.
  • That wide-leg style? Ultra-flattering and easy to wear.
  • The gold button detail gives just enough extra something.
  • They’re made for dressing up, but they don’t feel like dress-up clothes.

Pair four: The always faithful 🖤

These are the jeans that will never let you down. Spill your coffee? No one will notice. Haven’t done laundry in a week? They’ll still be clean-ish. Need to look pulled together in 30 seconds flat? Just add a top and go.

The Luxe Looker Jean is your classic black jegging with a bit of a glow-up. They’ve got a bootcut leg, a tummy-smoothing power mesh panel (thank you very much), and actual functional pockets—yes, even at the front. And while they look sleek and polished, they feel like stretchy, breathable magic.

Basically, they’re the jeans you reach for when everything else in your wardrobe is giving you the ick. Reliable, comfy, flattering… and they don’t scream “I’ve been worn three days in a row,” even if they totally have.

What’s to love?

  • That power-mesh panel? Support for your tummy
  • The fabric is soft and stretchy, but not clingy
  • Black goes with literally everything
  • You can wear them out to dinner or do the school run, and they’ll rise to both occasions

Pair 5: The surprise MVP (it’s a skirt!) 👖✨

OK, technically not a pair of jeans… but hear me out. This Cotton Blend Denim Maxi Skirt totally earns its spot in the lineup. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did, but the moment I slipped it on, I got it.

It’s got that “put together without trying too hard” vibe that I’m always chasing. The front split adds just the right amount of swish for movement, the button closure gives a nice structured feel, and the pockets? Functional and fab.

This skirt is honestly the comfy alternative to jeans I didn’t know I needed ~ perfect for days when you want to feel free (or a little more feminine), a little fancy, and still have space for snacks in your pockets. I wore it with a shirt and sandals, but it could absolutely dress up with boots and a cute knit too.

What’s to love?

  • Maxi length = maximum chic with minimal effort
  • Soft, breathable denim that’s comfy all day
  • That front split gives it a bit of sass (and makes walking easy)
  • Pockets that actually do something

Final thoughts: denim that gets it 👏

Trying on jeans can sometimes feel like a contact sport—tight waistbands, weird fits, and that one pair that almost works but doesn’t quite. But honestly? This try-on with Taking Shape felt like a breath of fresh air. Every piece had comfort, style, and that real-life wearability we all need.

From the light-as-air joggers to the surprisingly chic maxi skirt, there was something for every mood and moment. Whether you’re chasing the kids, grabbing coffee, or just trying to get dressed without drama, these denim pieces get it. They fit real bodies. They move with you. And most importantly—they actually feel good.

If you’ve been in a bit of a denim rut, I can’t recommend giving these a whirl enough. You might just find your new everyday favourite… or five. 💙
