Make this easy garlic butter rice with just 3 ingredients! A fluffy, buttery rice cooker side dish that’s full of flavour and perfect for family dinners.

If you’re looking for an easy side dish that goes with just about anything, you have to try this garlic butter rice. It’s buttery, full of flavour, and ridiculously easy to make.
It’s one of those recipes that takes very little effort but makes an ordinary dinner feel a little bit more special.
And the best part? You only need three ingredients.

What you’ll need
Just three simple ingredients:
- Jasmine rice: My favourite for this recipe because it cooks up beautifully fluffy and fragrant.
- Chicken stock: Adds so much more flavour than plain water. You can use ready-made stock or water mixed with chicken stock powder.
- Garlic butter: The ingredient that makes this rice so delicious. You can use store-bought garlic butter or make your own with regular butter and freshly crushed garlic.
A little chopped parsley on top is optional, but lovely if you’re feeling fancy.

Tips for making the best garlic rice
Rinse your rice. Give the rice a good rinse before cooking to remove some of the excess starch. This helps keep the grains fluffy rather than sticky.
Use your favourite stock. Chicken stock gives the rice a lovely savoury flavour, but vegetable stock works too if you’d prefer to keep it vegetarian.
Don’t skip the butter. This is garlic butter rice, after all! The butter adds richness and carries all that lovely garlic flavour.
Fluff before serving. Once the rice is cooked, gently fluff it with a fork or rice paddle to separate the grains and distribute the buttery goodness.
What to serve with garlic rice
This is such a versatile side dish. We love it with chicken, but it’s also delicious with grilled meats, seafood, stir-fries or anything with a lovely sauce that needs soaking up.
It’s an easy way to make a simple dinner feel a little more exciting.

Notes
No rice cooker? You can make this using your usual stovetop or Thermomix rice cooking method. Adjust the liquid quantity and cooking time according to your method.
Make it vegetarian: Swap the chicken stock for vegetable stock.
Using regular butter? Mix 80g softened butter with 2–3 cloves of crushed garlic before adding it to the rice.
Storage: Refrigerate leftover rice promptly, ideally within an hour of cooking, in a covered container. Store below 5°C, use within 24 hours and reheat only once until steaming hot.
Rice cooker tip: Some rice cookers require different rice-to-liquid ratios, so adjust the stock quantity if needed according to your appliance’s instructions.
