Woof, Woof.

Meet

Oscar.

He’s a new addition to our little family. Yes, I know he’s clearly pink and probably female, but Lacey named him, and I don’t have the heart to change it.

The inspiration for Oscar came from the real Oscar at work, a cute, feisty mini Schnauzer. She’s in love with him. Obsessed even. At first I think he liked the new attention. Lacey likes to stay by his side and smother him in kisses and cuddles, as well as bark orders. She yells: sit, come, eat, sit {even when he’s already sitting}.

They’re stuck together like glue, Oscar and Lacey. Sometimes I have to part them just so that it doesn’t become too much. There are tears from Lacey, and barking from Oscar.

I guess if he was sick of her attention he would run away, but he sticks by her side. He’s loyal like that. And gentle. It’s amazing how he knows how to be different with the kids. The bigger kids can be jumped on, but he knows not to do that with Lacey.

So when we’re at home Lacey misses her friend Oscar. One morning she found her money box and started calling it Oscar. It went everywhere with her that day. He ate with us. Walked with us. If he fell, we had to comfort him and cuddle him {or squuueeeeezzzeeee as Lacey likes to say}.

I put a leash on him, and he gets dragged everywhere. The money inside him jingling as we go.

I’m tempted to get some sort of pet for Lacey, but I know how much extra work they can be. We’ve considered a fish, and am now contemplating a rabbit. Ideally, I’d love a big dog… but it’s not quite fair without a big backyard.

Do you have pets? What sort and size? If you have kids, how are they with them?

  1. Jesse would LOVE a pet of any sort but I just can't bring myself to get one. I feel like I have enough to do and I know that's selfish of me but maybe when they are abit older….
For now they have to be content to visit nanna and pop who have a dog and a cat!!!!

  2. My parents have a german shepherd that goes nuts when my son visits (I was living with them when my son was first born, and the dog came into our lives for my son's first birthday so they spent a solid year together before I moved to Victoria). For a huge dog, she's incredibly gentle with him – he's 3 – and has never once so much as growled at him. She's in every single photo of my son from Christmas, when we last visited.

Here with us we have two axolotls, which he loves to feed and watch as they hunt fishies in their tank. And two rats, which he also loves to feed. He sits still when they scramble over him, and he's really gentle with them. Ideally I'd like a dog or cat, but as you said above, it's unfair when you don't have the space for them. I like to think that with the rats, he's learning the routines of having pets – feeding, cleaning, spending time with them.

  3. We have Perry, a fox terrier. He is ADORABLE and as gentle as anything with the kids. He sleeps in my eldest daughters bed, or under Charlie's bed. He is an “old man dog” now, at 12. He was my first baby!

  4. Hello Love,

We have two Guniea Pigs. Both are boys.

Kidlets names them Remy and Batman.

They used to play with all the time. They put them in the dolls house, dressed them and they were introduced to star wars.

Believe it or not, Batman and Remy seemed to like it.

They're great pets and easy to look after.

Hope your having a lovely day.

    Kisses to Lacey.

    B x

  5. We a a Labrador named Bella – she is our first baby. I was worried when I brought Lou home that there would be issues. But I was so wrong, they are best mates and sometimes I watch them in the yard and it looks like they are really talking to each other. Bella has always been so gentle towards my daughter- even when Lou is a little pushy or she pokes her too much. At two Lou already helps feed her and loves to take her for a walk.

  6. Myself and the kids would love a dog,but the husband keeps resisting. At the moment we have a lizard and a budgie. I want to get another cockatiel after we lost ours before moving up here.

  7. We have a dalmation, we named her Blankie cause she is soooo soft! She is wonderful with our kids, Noah and Blankie play together often, especially chasings. Blankie also checks on Annabelle often, the other day Annabelle got so excited by Blankie that she grabbed Blankie's lips and pulled hard. Blankie sooked but did not move until Annabelle let go because she didn't want to hurt Annabelle!

  8. Oh this totally struck a chord with me! Sunny is OBSESSED with dogs and I would love to get one. We have the perfect house for it but hubby is very reluctant as we travel a bit. I know it would probably be taking on waaaay too much with another bub on it's way, but if we got it soon…it could be all trained up by then? Oh I would so love a dog!

The top choices would be a labrador or golden retriever or for a smaller (and less shedding) option a Cavoodle or a King Chalres Cavalier (think Elizabeth Taylor from Sex and the City!).

Sigh. Maybe we can be satisfied with some chickens.

  9. Hi there –
    Well you've done it again…

I have two mini schnauzers – Kyza and Albert. They aren't particularly great with children though – their loud barking, albeit completely friendly, gives little ones such a fright…

A friend has two giant schnauzers and they seem to be much quieter?

    Little man symdrome perhaps?

  10. I have a little West Highland Terrier. Small dog, BIG personality 😉

It is funny how they know to act differently with little people – she's so gentle when small kids come to play. She lights up my life x

  11. We have a spoodle (miniature, about the same size as a small beagle) and they are fantastic dogs for kids. Very even-tempered, extremely affectionate and playful.

We don't have any kids yet but Ringo just adores the kids at the park- they all come up and pat him because he looks like a teddy bear! He almost wags his tail off when he sees kids playing!

I would definitely recommend spoodles to anyone looking at getting a dog for their family.

  12. We have 2 dogs. A maltese x shih-tzu and a staffy. They are great with Keeli and she just loves them to bits. She pats them (a little too hard), laughs at them, sneaks up on them, and just loves watching them. Even though they drive me nuts with their barking sometimes, I wouldn't be without them.

  13. We have a beautiful golden retriever called Wilson. He and Noah are the best of mates. He's been a lovely dog since we brought him home, always patient and puts up with all manner of cuddles and hair pulling from Noah.

They get up to all sorts of mischief though. The latest being a new game called “Trucks and Diggers” where Noah is the digger, Wilson is the truck and each load is one of my pot plants.

  14. What a gorgeous story. I can just imagine little Lacey pulling Oscar along as she walks. Gorgeous!

For me, I've got a dachshund, who probably wouldn't be suitable for a family as he's a bit of an attention hog and not at all good with the kiddies. I think when I do have children I'd probably think about getting a puppy but maybe something like a Jack Russell who can keep up with the kids running around and being boysterous! But obviously, this is a long time away yet for me!

  15. This made me laugh, thank you! Brightened a pretty dull day.

I am just picturing this dog getting told to sit, thinking 'um, I already did that'. Precious!

We have a cat, but no kids. She is our child. My 4 year old nephew loves her, has since he was 2, but she is a bit freaked out by him. I think because she isn't surrounded by people not that much taller then her!

  16. We have 2x Rottie crosses. Not the kind of dogs you'd typically think would mix well with kids but they're obsessed with our daughter, very gentle & protective of her. She's 6 months old & the biggest issue is stopping them from smothering her with licks!
