Top 5: Old-ish movies worth rewatching

Photobucket

I’m not a movie buff. I’ll never be. I’ve talked about that before. But since writing that post a drought has broken and I have my movie-watching mojo back. I check iTunes rentals once a week and see if there is anything worth watching. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn’t.

When we were kids we had 4 movies on high rotation: Cocktail, Flight of the Navigator, The Goonies and Desperately Seeking Susan. My siblings and I could probably recite every word from each one for you. Although I hate when people do that. Don’t you?

It’s summer in Australia, which means hot days and nights, 6 weeks or more of school holidays for the kids, swimming at the beach, and sleeping with no blankets at all. Here’s 5 movies to watch after a day of fun {or whatever it is you’re doing, where ever you are}:

1. Beaches
This might be my most watched movie. I kinda love it. A lot. I don’t think I could get Hubby to watch it anytime soon, but it’s definitely one for the girls.

2. My Life Without Me
I desperately want to watch this again but can’t find it anywhere to do so. If you find it at your local video store, be prepared – it’s sad and will get your mind working. I haven’t watched since becoming a mum – but I imagine the tears would flow even more so.

3. Memento
I love a movie that gets my mind thinking, and this one does. Guy Pearce is brilliant.

4. Forrest Gump
Need I say more? Definitely worth watching.

5. The Game
I love a movie that shocks me, and this one did. I was frustrated, in suspense and gripped the whole way through.

What’s your favourite old-ish movie? What would you add to the list?

Beaches is THE BEST! Dirty Dancing is also high up on my list, as is Love Actually (don’t know if it classifies as ‘old-ish’ yet though?!)

  • Dalice

I remember when I watched Beaches with my sister, at the moment my brother was ill (he died a few months later). I took a while for me to watch it again, and yes I cried as much as I did the first time I watched. The Game is a good thriller, saw My life without me last year and I don’t think I want to see it again, Forrest Gump? Well I cried a river but I won’t get tired of watching it. It is a great movie. Memento, will watch it shorty on Netflix,

I have the DVD of my life without me! Happy to post it to you so long as you return it? – no late fees I promise lol

  • Lilybett

My comfort movie when I’m sick is the Winona Ryder version of Little Women – cause I’m a sap like that. But other faves are Uncle Buck for a pee-your-pants laugh, the Lethal Weapons for a bit of action, The Breakfast Club or Bring It On when I’m feeling old, The American President for a bit of sappy romance and A Few Good Men for a bit of underdog inspiration. Pretty much any Aaron Sorkin is good for me, really.

  • Treasure Tromp

memento is so good – I could watch it over and over again

Dirty Dancing and Steel Magnolias are my top 2 :)

I haven’t seen My Life Without Me, so will keep an eye out. The Wedding Singer is on my list for those nights you need to switch your brain off but still chuckle along. And La Vita e Bella for exactly the opposite. LOVE that movie.

  • Peka

Beaches is the best! and I agree with Kate below… Definitely need to add Dirty Dancing to that list!!! ;)

  • Deb Walkenhorst

I’m not much of a movie person either, but all of those movies leave me cold… sorry! I am more into mindless comedies. I hate movies that make me have to think!

  • kareng

Absolutely love Beaches, my all time favorite, but the next most watched is Remember the Titans.

    • http://www.facebook.com/debbie.huxstep Debbie Huxstep

Remember the Titans is an awesome movie one of my all time favourites. If you liked that you should watch Glory Road it too is based on a true story from that era.

  • Jerrie Luginbill

I love to find others who love The Game. I have an unreasonable attraction to Michael Douglas (from years ago, not right now…). I also love St. Elmos Fire, Dead Poets Society, and Reality Bites (excellent soundtrack).

  • Misty

Forrest Gump will always be at the top of my list. I just love it so. I’m glad you said Memento. I don’t know anyone who has seen it. It’s so so so good!

  • Carli

I just watched ET with my two year old, he loved it. I can’t wait to watch it again with him when he’s older and understands it more…

  • Carli

Sorry have to add a few of the mindless comedies that you just watch to laugh and no matter how many times you see them you still almost wet yourself: Uncle Buck, Home Alone movies, Cool Runnings and one of my all time favourites Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

      • Carli

Planes, Trains and Automobiles rocks! You forgot Dirty Rotten Scoundrels though, up there with the best of the mindless comedies…

  • Amy @ WhiskandWhimsy

I have Old-old movies in my favourites. I’ll never get tired of Gigi and High Society. Gosh I love those films so much!

More recent ones I could watch over and over are Love Actually and Notting Hill, and I think Forrest Gump will forever be a classic even though I’ve not seen it in years.

  • Marge

Just thinking about the movie Beaches with Bette Midler – The move “Big Business”. It has Dolly Parton and Bette Midler.. sappy romance.. but I just love this one.. You gotta watch it
