Sweet treat: Slow cooker chocolate cake

Slow cooker chocolate cake

Every year I seem to have a love affair with my slow cooker. Yes, I know an oven can do exactly the same thing… but the slow cooker is just so… winning! I love that I can put it on and forget about it for a while, and then have that beautiful smell waft through the house. And it does something magic to the food, makes it all so full of flavour, or something.

I’ve been playing around with sweets in the slow cooker. I made an apple crumble a while back and it was yummy… but I forgot to take photos. I’ve learnt that when it comes to slow cooker desserts that it makes a lot, so it’s best when you have a good handful of people to serve {unless you want to be eating dessert all week}.

This slow cooker chocolate cake is moist and rich, and satisfying. It’s a really basic recipe that you could adapt to suit what you like. I added in white chocolate because I had some I wanted to use up, but you could add in raspberries or bits of your favourite chocolate bar. Pieces of chewy caramel would be delicious too! Or coconut… Get creative. And one little perk? You just toss all the ingredients into the slow cooker and mix there, no need for lots of mixing bowls. Winning {again}.

Slow cooker chocolate cake

Ingredients

4 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup cocoa powder
125g melted butter
1 packet of chocolate pudding {I used the Cottees instant pudding}
1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup milk
300ml sour cream
1 1/2 cup chocolate, chopped

Method

♥ Lightly grease your slow cooker with a little butter. Place all your ingredients into the bowl, and mix together until combined with a wooden spoon.
♥ Place the lid on and cook for 2-4 hours on low. My cake only took 2 hours, but my low isn’t very low. So the first time you make it just keep an eye on it. You want the centre to be firm.
♥ Serve with fresh berries and ice cream.

Does your family do dessert every night? Or is it just a treat thing when friends or family come around?

P.S. I’ve been totally indulgent with sharing a few naughty recipes lately, healthy ones coming up to balance it out. Promise!

  1. What is chocolate pudding? We have stuff called Angel Delight which is a powder you mix with milk to make a whipped type desert. Is it like that? x

  2. My husband says I have an affair with my slow cooker all yr round. It lives on my microwave & used every week. Cant wait to try this!

  3. Yes myself & my partner do try to have sweets around, she also loves to bake which makes it very hard for me to stay away from the CAKE!

  4. Two questions: can you tell me what the weight measure is on the chocolate pudding powder (I am assuming its powder) and is it okay to use a slow cooker liner (made by an American company named Reynolds, famous for aluminum foil) instead of greasing it? I’m guessing it would be possible to lift the liner out, cake intact, and just peel away the liner. Thanks!

  5. Well, I never. I’ve had a slow cooker for a while but it never would have occurred tome that you could cook a cake in it.

  6. I am having a little love affair with mine too,It makes the best beef stroganoff and spaghetti bolonaise I have ever tasted and these are not my favourite sort of dinners.
No we don’t have dessert every night but I like to cook something yummy on the weekends to eat during the week, and that chocolate cake looks so yummy ,I will have to try it,Thankyou Amy for the recipe.

  7. Do you use just the chocolate pudding powder with the rest of the listed ingredients, or do you prepare the pudding according to the package instructions first and then add it with the other ingredients? And another question, do you have any good guess what would be the temperature and time if baked in a normal oven? I want to try this, but I don’t have a slow cooker..

  8. Oh my goodness this looks ridiculously good! I’m so inspired to use the slow cooker for sweet treats right now 🙂

  9. Is it correct that there isn’t any baking powder or other raising agent in the ingredients?
