Set me up with your love.

I have an addictive personality. If I like something, I have it or do it a lot. Like sushi, I could eat it everyday for every meal {as long as it was good sushi}. It’s not just food, one time I started doing the puzzle in the paper and I had to do it every day or it didn’t feel right. Sure, I grow out of the ‘addictions’ but they exist for some time.

A few weekends ago when my big sister came to stay, she gave me a CD {yes, apparently they still exist!} and I’ve played it every SINGLE day since. On repeat. Non stop.

It’s Emeli Sande’s album and it’s really good. But I’m ready to graduate to a new music addiction. I’m hopeless at finding my own music. Hopeless. Hence why I played the same CD for weeks non-stop. I usually rely on my sister or friend Rowe, and just follow their tastes. But now I am going to ask you…

Can you introduce me to a new music love? Who are you loving right now? Or who do I NEED to listen to?

  1. Some of my recent favorites include (but not limited to) : Austin Gibbs (start off with “La La La” or “I Like the Ones”), Justin Hopkins (“Love on the Radio”), new Norah Jones is amazing, The Gaslight Anthem, and Son of a Bad Man.

I always suggest that people listen to a band called The Alternate Routes. They are HANDS DOWN my favorite band, and they’re really good people too. You really can’t go wrong with any of their stuff. My favorites include “Ain’t No Secret”, “Kiss Me”, and “Ordinary” to start you off with a few 🙂

  2. I’m a little late to the game, but I’ve just discovered a BEAUTIFUL album called Birdy, by Birdy. Her cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love is probably one of the best covers I’ve heard in a very long time!

  3. In the last couple of months I have alternated between the above Emeli Sande album, Born To Die album by Lana Del Rey, and Christina Perri – it may have something to do with the fact that I included their music in my wedding, but I love them all!

  4. Agree with the Birdy rec. Also love some Angus Stone, it’s just so mellow. After seeing Emili Sande perform at the open ceremony, I can see why you’d be addicted! I am an enormous fan too, of Katie Noonan and Claire Bowditch.

  5. Try Nana Mouskauri (check the spelling though) … you won’t be sorry. Be prepared to get goosebumps – she’s THAT good!

  6. I really like Caro Emerald’s album Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor. Good Friday music. 🙂 I’m a classic rock and oldies girl at heart, though – Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Peggy Lee, Otis Redding (Otis Blue is a really good album). Have fun! I’m gonna go check out Emeli, now!
Not sure if it’s available where you are, but I listen to my music on Spotify, which can be linked to Facebook. It’s a good way to check out new (and new to you) music and see what your friends are listening to. Have fun!

  7. You definitely need to get Ed Sheeran’s album +. I just saw him live last night and he is the most incredible artist. Also Rebecca Ferguson’s album Heaven she is fantastic. The Script and Six60 are brilliant too :). Have fun!

    • Also saw Ed on Friday night! His voice was spine-chillingly good all the way through, but particularly on Kiss Me. And what a beautiful song!

  8. Hey Chantelle,

Are you familiar with pandora.com? Basically, you pop a song or artist into the queue, and it plucks harmonically similar songs from near and far. You score selections with a yes or no, and it fine tunes the settings. Essentially, you’re building your own little radio station. Anyway, might want to give it a go. I’ve found a lot of tunes that way.

As for music, I like swing vocalists and the like: The Andrews Sisters, the Puppini Sisters, and Dinning Sisters, for example. Good luck on your quest!

  9. HIM!! My obsession for years now! Seriously, I can never get enough.

Recommended Tracks: Right Here In My Arms; In Joy And Sorrow; Heartkiller; Scared To Death; Join Me; Like St. Valentine; Acoustic Funeral … really, just anything you can Youtube!!

Basshunter is another great one if you are in the mood.

Recommended Tracks: Angel In The Night; Far From Home; Every Morning … most of his stuff is pretty awesome too.

  10. Hi i agree with a earlier post Ed Sheeran is well worth a listen
you could try all the diffrent suggestions online……1 each day and find your own music taste
though i do like emeli sande myself
    good luck

  11. Have you got Spotify? Just look at what your friends are playing and have a quick listen see off you like it. Also different ‘radio links’ on Spotify might introduce you to new tunes. (my personal tip – Cat Power is awesome) good luck x

  12. Hey there. Check out the Sick Puppies. They are an Australian rock band, formed in 1997 but now live in the US. Great sound but might be a bit hard for some. My favorite song, among many, is White Balloons (it’s mostly mellow). They also have an unplugged version of the latest album (Polar Opposite). You can fine it here: http://www.hulu.com/watch/241944. I think it’s worth your time.

    C Ya
    :o)

  13. I love the Ed Sheeran album, and the Caro Emerald album. Also, for something a bit different, try The Baseballs x

  14. Try Band of Horses, they’re american indie folk, lovely melodic tunes.

Also Other Lives, raw American indie folk sound.

Bon Iver, very melodic tubes too

Billy The Vision & The Dancers, Swedish (or Swiss?) indie folk music

My main love though, Foo Fighters – raw rock 🙂

  15. HI

You cannot go past Fleet Foxes debut self-titled album. To this day it is one of my favourites. Missy Higgins new cd ‘The Ol Razzle Dazzle’ is sublime. Xavier Rudd is good if you want to move about a bit (I find it is fantastic whilst doing the housework). For old times sake; Suzanne Vega (any of her music), Sinnead O’Connor (not the recent stuff) and Tracy Chapman. Neulore is fantastic (their EP is great) and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunipingu is beyond measure.

Music is such a personal choice and i have playlists for the gym, heavy beats for boxing and running playlists.

Then i also pick a song and use Genius on itunes and it makes playlists for me, i save them and have even more variety:)

  17. I love all these!! especially Bon Iver!! My favourite ‘stuck on repeat’ song would have to be ‘Easy to Love’ by the Jezebels so awesome!! also The Black Keys, the Triple J Like a Version CD has some awesome tracks on it but my uncle Chris Ross formerly of Wolfmother has just released a new album with fellow former Wolfmother band member Myles Heskett under ‘Good Heavens’ album comes out August 17th but you can listen to some tracks on their facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/goodheavensband

can’t go past The Temper Trap either 🙂

    Happy listening!! 🙂

  18. My cousin’s daughter recently introduced me to City and Colour, had a quick listen on Spotify before my free trial ended, and will definitely be adding to my “MUST HAVE” list!

  19. Have you heard of Lucky Uke? They’re from Montreal, so I’m not sure if they’re known in Australia, but they do covers of heavy metal songs with a ukulele. It’s really great, the songs are completely transformed! Also, try Elisapie Isaac, also from Canada! Goosebumps guaranteed!

  20. Oh now this is an opportunity to good to miss :))
Go to YouTube and enter in this name Kevin Layton ..songs written by BsHarry ..

Kevin is my son and I have been wondering how I can pass his song on to you to listen to ..you must have known something 🙂

Other than that I tend to just listen to the radio , I am not a cd buyer ( unless of course it is m son )

  21. I think you would like Sia, her album We Are Born is really upbeat and happy and before that she had another album, I can’t remember the name of it now, but it was a really nice mellow bunch of songs, perfect for a Sunday morning 🙂

  22. Ed Sheeran is a pretty cool singer song writer. I love his album. There is a great amount of choices written here by all. 😉

  23. Definitely join one the music streaming services, spotify, mog, Pandora etc. They are live changing. After listening to wiggled and Justine Clark for the last 2 yrs I’m rediscovering music and loving it!

  24. Chantelle! I could be here for days. My favourites at the moment and have been for quite sometime is Bon Iver, Burial, City and Colour and Fat Freddy’s Drop… All uniquely different but all the kinda of music that suits different kinds of moods and incredibly easy to listen to!!

  25. Love Band of Horses too! But the album I’m loving at the moment is the most recent Shins LP Port of Morrow.

Also Hot Chip – In our heads, Brendan Benson – What kind of world, Jose Gonzalez – In our nature, Passion Pit – Gossamer.

So much good stuff out there. Very excited about new albums from The Killers, Bloc Party and Band of Horses later this year.

  26. Hands down Paula Cole… very diverse…long time artist was on hiatus now coming back in a big way. Check her out on Spotify. Also Spotify will give you suggestions based on your likes! Lisa

  27. My 3.5 year old son is suddenly addicted to John Butler Trio’s ‘April Uprising’, at least it is an awesome one to listen to and not sick of it myself yet.

  28. So I would say, Nickelback, Jason Mraz, Adele, The black keys, Flo-rida, Carlos Santana, Patsy Cline, and Pink Floyd! I hope this helps….been in a funky mood lately and these artists seem to help.

  30. I am totally into modern Folk at present, at the top of my list is Loren Kate, a awesome South Australian singer……all the video’s on youtube are crappy quality but I have her Album and its totally cool…..check her out ;o)))

  31. Theory of a Deadman. Practically unknown in Aus but supported Nickelback on their US leg of their last tour. They’re AMAZING!!

  32. I am not good at new music either! I do the same – play the same CD over and Over. And my all time favorite addiction is chocolate!
Will have to check out what everyone suggests 🙂

  33. Fleet Foxes, Lumineers, Rumer, The Gaslight Anthem, and Wye Oak are current new listening faves for me. Number one faves, though, are Adele, Florence & the Machine, and Mumford & Sons.

  34. Hi Chantelle ~ you should give a listen to Kimie (Miner) and Anuhea… they are both from Hawaii and have soulful voices… and their music also has a touch of that easy island groove… they are both on iTunes… enjoy!

  35. Wow…lots of great suggestions here. My summer soundtrack has been Tanlines – album Mixed Emotions. Sort of an 80’s fun funk. I LOVE it. Start with song All of Me…
    🙂

  36. That is just such a coincidence. Last night, and I hadn’t read your post yet, I discovered Emeli Sandé for myself and thought, I have to get this album! Going to check out all the other recommendations now.

  37. Hi Chantelle,

For what its worth I have these on high rotation at the moment that I “think” you may enjoy

Larna Delray – Born to Die – very moody sound and etheral vocals….quite quirky

Florence & the Machine – Ceremonials and dont neglect their first album Lungs – Big sounds big voice big hair…what more could you want

James Morrison – The Awakening, if you like John Mayer, Dave Gray you might enjoy this

I usually listen to Triple J for new music suggestions, go to their website and look at their feature albums section for often interesting, less mainstream and often local music.

A few others you might want to google and give a go, The Temper Trap, Gossling, Goyte, The Jezebels, Kasabian, Lisa Mitchell, Mumford & Sons, Regina Spektor, Sarah Blasko, TV on the Radio, Washington

Ok off to hunt down some new music for myself now xxxx

  38. That video was fabulous! Ive really been liking Frank Ocean lately. Such a smooth and relaxing sound. “Thinkin bout you” is one of the ones I listen to on repeat.

  39. I’ve been listening to Passenger a lot lately, Let Her Go is a favourite. I second the Missy Higgins and Ed Sheeran recommendations and I also really really love the Jezabels.

  40. I stumbled upon a song the other day, Lines by Lucy Rose. I bought it from iTunes immediately and been listening ever since. Don’t get much time for me music these days as my son is obsessed with Metallica and my daughter the sesame street cd! I was rarely watching MTV when this song came on. Knowing my luck it’s probably really old and I’m behind the times!!

  41. When I read your post it reminded me of a summer that I got hooked on listening to Aquarium by Aqua. My daughter was on Drill Team at school & at one of the competitions they went to another team was performing to the song “I’m a Barbie Girl” by Aqua. A lot of people were scandalized that this team of young girls was performing to that song. The lyrics had been “changed” but nobody noticed at the time. I didn’t know what the big deal was cuz all I thought was it was a cute very up tempo fun Barbie song. I bought the CD & listened to it over and over and over. Had it pumped up in the backyard while I was re-painting my Adirondack chairs for a week or when I was driving in the car or when I was cleaning the house or cooking. Everybody else was sick of it after the first 24 hours but not me! I still think it’s great music to clean house to! Really gets you moving! 😀

  42. Love this video and the music! Awesome!!!!!
I am older – a different generation – but some things are just plain good!!!!!!
Take an hour and listen to Tony Bennett of Frank Sinatra. Musicians of my mother’s era……I love them too………they just do “feel good” music!
