Orange You Glad I’m Back.

W

hat a wonderful weekend. I forgot how wonderful it is just to pack everything up and get away. Away from the mountains of washing, and tidying and responsibility.

We packed up and left early on Saturday morning to head out west to Orange, where a good chunk of our family has just moved to.
An hour into the four hour trip I had a terrible sinking feeling that I’d left my hair straightener on. I had visions of returning to a burnt down home. I waited thirty minutes before mentioning it to Hubby, who assured me that I turned it off, and pulled out the plug.
I wasn’t so sure. I spent the rest of the trip figuring out how on earth I was going to get home and back {an 8 hour round trip and fix it up}. I messaged my Big Sis and she eventually figured out a sniper move and was able to unplug the cords by sticking her arm in the window. She also assured me that it wasn’t plugged in.
Lacey loved playing with her {second} cousins, getting dirty, collecting rocks. Hubby rode the quad bikes up and down the driveways. I sipped wine as soon as the clock went past noon. We laughed. We lived. We loved.
We dreamt of having our own piece of beautiful land, like my cousins. Where there are no neighbours in sight, and fresh air everywhere you sniff. We only wish that the beaches were closer than four hours away. We just wouldn’t survive without the ocean nearer by {so we think}.
How about you? How was your weekend? Where did you go? What did you do?

  1. Glad you had such a good time away…..she looks so very happy…..(and I can relate to the “did I leave the gas on?” anxiety.)

  2. It is nice to get away from time to time. It sounds like a lovely way to spend a weekend.

I spent mine climbing mountains of washing 🙂

  3. Beautiful photos!!

I'm the same exactly way. I always freak out if I'm not sure I turned something off or unplugged something after I've left the house already. I even freaked out thinking I left my garage door open one time. It's always best to double-check than be sorry later!

  4. I too dream of a large block of land where there are no neighbours to bug me. Because bug me they do. But the upside is that we have a cranky old lady next door who keeps an eye on the place for us, and also spoils our cat when we are not looking. And we live a very short walk to the trains which whisk us off to work. We also have friends who have a house which is a good 75mins from the city – on a very large plot of land (at least 15 acres by my guess), and they are STILL bothered by their neighbours every so often. So it's never perfect. Mind you, if they offered to swap houses, I would in a heartbeat. I LOVE their house. Just don't have a spare mill or more to buy and build something similar, haha.

About the straightener. Buy one that cuts off after 15 mins unattended. That has really helped my sanity. And you are not alone about that oven anxiety. For me it's the iron, which I solved mostly by just not using it wherever possible (that has two advantages, haha) and the oven. This is not helped by the fact that I actually DID come home from a weekend away once to find the oven was left on!!!! Thankfully it was only set at 150C because I was warming food the night before we left. But STILL! I've found that this anxiety only arises when I am rushed or have rushed out of the house. And if I have time to leave in an ordered manner, I do not worry if I have forgotten anything. And I very often will go back into the house after locking up to double-check that all is well. This may make me late, but it's better than rushing home or ringing up a friend to ask them to go and see if I am mad or not!

    Love those pics of Lacey!

  5. So glad you had a lovely visit xxx

We head back to dubbo at least twice a year to see the kids extended koori clan and I tell ya im not a fan of that 5 sometimes 7 hour road trip, its a real nightmare even with our in car dvd system.

  6. What gorgeous photos. I love long yellow grass and open fields kinda shots. Something so simple and natural and peaceful about them.

  7. I think we may have a mutual friend Chantelle, your photos from your Orange trip have just popped up on my FB …what a small world! and BTW – your photos are beautiful.

I am currently living on a 12000acre cattle/wheat property about 2 hours west of orange. Being a city girl, having a little trouble adjusting to no neighbours, it has it pro's and con's. Pro – being able to amp your music up and rock out as loud as you want when doing the house work (hehe).

Did you stop in at the antique shop at Lucknow? My partner and I shot down there last weekend for a lazy sunday drive and lunch.

  8. Love the photos of your wee girl, she is beautiful. Also pleased I am not the only one who 'thinks' they have left their hair straighteners on, lol. Our weekend was spent on house renovations, not very exciting but worth it in the end.

  9. oh telle… i laughed when i read about the straighteners… i may have done that one or two times myself! i love the photos of little lacey. just gorgeous!

  10. Sounds lovely Telle… I've done the straightener thing too… isn't it funny? I think one of the beautiful things about GHD (aside from the lovely result) is that it switches itself off after a few minutes of not being used.. Phew!

Thanks for blogging… your upbeat, sunny blogging cheers me up on those days where I feel a bit blue 🙂

  11. Your new photos of Lacey are just gorgeous! Do they turn out that way or do you photoshop them a bit? Jeani

  12. Sounds like a lovely weekend.

I once went away for a weekend & did leave my hair straightener on all weekend – from Friday night until Sunday night! I had a fleeting thought about it but dismissed it. When I got home on the Sunday night I could smell it as soon as I walked in the door, but my house did not burn down & my straightener didn't even burn out so I am not too stressed now if I think that I might have left it on.

  13. Firstly, love, love the pics of your daughter. Stunning. As always.

Secondly, funny story. My sister uses a slice of bread to put her curling iron on so it doesn't burn the bench. Over the weekend she went out to a party and left it on, on the bread. When they went back, after a couple of hours the bread, was literally toast. Saved the bench though. Might be worth a thought! lol.
