Let It Snow.

W

hen I tell people that I’m a Nanny I usually get two remarks…

1. Is that just like the show, The Nanny? Is there a Mr. Sheffield?
2. Oooooh. Do they take you on holidays with them?

I laugh. Some people watch too much TV.

The answer to number one is, No.

And the answer to number 2 is, in past jobs I have, and it’s not as luxurious as it would seem.

I know a Nanny whose family owns a private jet. She flies around with the family. I’m sure that’s a little bit luxurious. The only travelling I’ve done was 8 hours in a car all the way to the snow. Not so luxurious, despite travelling in a Mercedes Benz.

We stayed in a beautiful house on the side of a hill and spent the days out on the snow. Correction. The parents spent their days out on the snow, I spent my days chasing a toddler around the restaurants at the bottom of the ski fields.

I’m no skier. I’ve had two lessons, and they didn’t go very swimmingly {or skiingly}. The first was a private lesson where I fell down underneath the ski lift near where the people were hopping on. Not the safest place to crash. I asked my German instructor if he could help me up, and his prompt response was, No.

My second lesson was a group lesson. We all tried a few techniques and then headed up on the ski lift to the top of the mountain. As soon as I looked down I realised that there was no way I was going to make it. I sat on my bottom and took a very icy bum-slide all the way down the mountain, as onlookers laughed on.

One day I’d love to go to the snow again and experience it for real. I want to have snow fights, and build snowmen. I want to make snow angels with my little girl, as my husband looks on and cringes with embarrassment. I want to climb aboard a little sled and scream wheeeee all the way down the hill.

The Winter Olympics have made me excited about our Winter coming up. I’m so ready for scarves and boots, and sleeping with cosy blankets on. I know it’s a long way off, but I’m almost ready to wave goodbye to Summer….

Almost. xx

What perks come with your job {or jobs you’ve had in the past}?

  1. Worked for Continental Airlines and flew free ..still have my flight benefits ! Hotels were 50% off as were car rentals…got 2 sets of free vacation passes for whole family (business/first class) every year. Great benefits

  2. It's still weird for me that you're on the other side of the world experiencing the opposite weather. Didn't Summer just start not too long ago for you?

The perks of my job is the flexibility of computer use. Just as long as I get the work done then great! 🙂

  3. hello! i'm new to your blog and thought i'd say hi!

i own a little clothing store, and perks are doing homework while it's slow in here, being able to text message my husband whenever possible, placing clothing orders, and of course taking clothes home with me 🙂

  4. I was an Optus girl. I joined them at start up. Way back when. My mobile phone is STILL free. Three babies later and a whole lotta maternity leave later, I am still on the employee plan. (And if anyone in Optus land is reading this, forget and move on please!)

  5. I work in the medical field and have had jobs in both the public and private sectors.

I'm drawing a big fat blank when thinking about perks in the public sector but I got to meet a few celebrities and got free lunches quite often whilst working privately.

  6. I own two kindergartens.
    Perks:
    1. Having children around me all the time that keeps you in the present moment. Who gets sick of hearing all the 'I love you' ?
    2.Flexibilty

  7. I'm a public servant. There are no perks. 🙁 And the nature of my work means I'll never get to “work” from home or anything cushy like that.

As for skiing, it's hard to learn as an adult. I did. I can ski blue runs and that's as much as I need to know. However, like you, my first lesson (at 22) went poorly – I had a fall and tore my ACL (that thing AFL players do all the time). Four years later with a big honking brace on said knee, I gave it another go and it went a lot better. It IS a lot of fun, but it's definitely something best learnt as a small child.

  8. I work from home, which is great! I can work while my little girl naps, and I put her in childcare once a week to get a stretch of work done. I go for walks in my breaks, take my laptop to cafes… it's all good! Well, except for the bit where I end up working every spare moment because I'm at the 'office' all the time.

  9. how funny that im posting on my blog about not wanting summer to end and your looking forward to winter!

your snow story made me laugh… ive seen skiers like you on the mountain and had a little giggle… one word – snowboard! i love snowboarding and i deperately want to go to japan this year… that means im looking forward to next summer already!

    rowe x

  10. lol..I love your stories you tell..always give me a chuckle.

Isnt it strange how we crave for something other than what we have…like the other day..I was actually really looking forward to winter…and like you..all the cosy creature comforts ( and food) that come with it..this heat has been a killer and I'm over it..thankfully today is a cooler one.
But Autumn is just around the corner..so Im looking forward to sheets of red autumn leaves piling up on the pavements…love it!

  11. i was a nanny for five years. the perk was the money, it was great. and i can't lie, sometimes i took naps with the kids… ! the whole job was really the perk, being able to go grocery shopping and go to the park and have two little ones to love and prepare me for my own children… being a nanny was my favorite job ever… 🙂

oh, i'm in winter right now and it looks nothing like those pictures ; )

  12. wow. the more i read the more i love you and your blog!
being fairly new i had no idea you were a nanny!
i worked as a nanny for a year when i finished school and loved it… that is the only fulltime job i have ever had so it would def be my fave in that sense.
but i love my current part time job as a jumping castle supervisor… yes it is as fun as the name suggests 🙂
    xx

  13. I work in a jewellery store…

I must say I love when a guy comes in wanting to by that special ring, a lot of the time they look scared, and anxious, nervous about what she would like… Really caring about making the right decision, it's quite gorgeous to witness, hehehe….

You can almost tell how much he loves her by how scared he is… 😀

    so cute…

  14. @Sarah: Awww. ♥

@Janey: I always envy those working in travel who get super cheap holidays. Yay!

@StephAnne: That's pretty nifty. I hope you get your work done. xx

    @Brandilyn: That sounds perky! xx

@Lucy: I saw nothing. Heard nothing.

@Bubbles: Lovely lunches are definitely a perk. xx

@Belinda: I think being around kidlets keeps us young at heart. xx

@Suze: I think the public sector offers great job security. Am I right? xx

@Megan: I can see how that would work, and not work. xx

    @Rowe: I know. That's where we're completely different, hey?

@Jordan: You and I speak the same language!

@Abby: Wow! What a job! xx

@Anna: Oh the crunch of the leaves. I can't wait!

@ChecksAndSpots: I'm officially jealous over here. xx

    @Amy: I agree. It's a nice life!

@rinniez: That sounds like fun. Make sure your shoes are off. Please!

@Katy: I know as soon as Winter is here I'll be wishing it away and dreaming of dips in the ocean and watermelon!

@Perk: I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Hubby went in to get my ring. 😉

@Lorraine: I am SO with you! xx

  15. I didn't know you were a nanny (I would have said Mary Poppins!) so nil pois for me for observation! Perks of my job… working with some lovely creative people and getting paid to write nonsense for a living!

On the snow front, we have it here but it's just drizzley rubbish… all wet and cold and not any for sledging on!
