December photo a day: Let’s end the year with a snap!

December photo a day list! #FMSphotoaday

I’m going to be completely predictable and say, I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by. I really can’t. But it’s time to end it with a bang snap and finish up with a month of photo-taking fun. You up for it?

So let’s jump right into it. For those that are new to it all, let me explain what photo a day is. Everyday people all around the world look at the list {above}, and take a photo according to the date. So on the 1st of December we’ll take a photo at 8 o’clock {am or pm, doesn’t matter}. So whatever you’re doing when the clock strikes 8 – take a photo. And then share it. So upload it to Facebook {your own page, or my Facebook page}, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, your blog, Tumblr – where ever you please. If you’re sharing to Instagram or Twitter – use the hashtag #FMSphotoaday.

Don’t forget to bookmark this page so you can find the list easily.

The hashtag #FMSphotoaday is a way to share on Instagram and Twitter. By using the hashtag it groups all the photos shared together, so everyone can check out the photos for our photo a day challenge.

If you want more details on how to play, just visit here.

Here’s a little bit more about each prompt:

1. 8 o’clock: Take a photo at whatever you’re doing at 8am or 8pm.
2. Peace: What does peace look like for you? Or take a photo of a peace sign.
3. Something you held: a child, your phone, a gift, a shopping bag – anything!
4. Black + white: Use a black + white filter on a photo of your choice, or take a photo of something black and white.
5. Looking up: Get down on the ground and take a photo from down low, looking up.
6. From where you live/your country: Take a photo of something from your country – a flag, something unique, a traditional dish, or something a little bit more common.
7. Stars: Take a photo of the stars at night, or stars you see around the place during the day.
8. Someone you love: At this time of year we’re often catching up with loved ones. Take a photo of someone you love. If you’re not seeing a loved one today – take a photo of a photo – or get creative.
9. Out + about: Whatever you do today, take a photo while you’re doing it.
10. Under: Take a photo of something {anything!} under something.
11. Sweet: Take a photo of something sweet {food or not!}
12. Hat: Take a photo of a hat. If it’s cold – perhaps a beanie. If it’s hot, perhaps a sun hat.
13. Lights: Take a photo of some lights at night.
14. Something green: Find something green in your travels today and take a photo to share.
15. Outdoors: Get outside and snap something outside.
16. Something you made: Perhaps it’s just some toast, or something more extravagant. Shoot it.
17. On the floor: Look down and shoot something on the ground.
18. Makes you feel merry: What’s making you happy today? Shoot it.
19. Something beginning with ‘s’: Find something beginning with S and shoot it.
20. Weather: In some parts of the world it will be snowing, in others it will be REALLY hot. Share a photo that represents the weather where you are.
21. Tree: Take a photo of a tree {yes, we did this last month – but try and be creative!}
22. Decoration: It could be Christmas related, or a decoration in your home.
23. Joy is______: What makes your filled with joy? Take a photo.
24. Tradition/something you always do: What’s something you always do? A family tradition?
25. Lunchtime: If you celebrate Christmas – take a photo of what you’re doing at lunchtime {traveling, partying, opening gifts, laughing, drinking}. If you don’t celebrate Christmas – share what you did at lunchtime.
26. Mess: Take a photo of a mess. Or a lack of one if you’re that way inclined.
27. How you relax: How do you like to chill out? Read a book, lay on the beach? Take a photo.
28. Cold: Take a photo of something cold.
29. Hot: Take a photo of something hot.
30. Something that made you smile this year: Reflect on the year gone by and find something made you smile.
31. Self-portrait: Take your last selfie for the year. If you’re partying, take a photo with friends. If you’re having a quiet night in, take a photo of what you’re doing. Self-portraits don’t have to be obvious. I like very abstract ones – feet are an easy way to take a photo of yourself.

There are no rules about playing. Just have fun. Be as creative as you can or want to be. Just take a photo each day using the prompt. I know some people struggle to take photos everyday, so don’t stress. You could choose to just do the weekends, or just a few. It’s meant to be fun, so if it becomes stressful find a way to make it fun.

Each day I’ll be checking out the photos shared to my Facebook wall and the Instagram feed and sharing my four favourite finds.

If I’ve missed anything, or if you have any questions – please leave them in the comments and I’ll get back to you.

Is this your first month playing? Or have you played along before? I’d love to know!

  1. December will be my 2nd month and I’m enjoying doing this challenge very much! I wasn’t able to carry on with a photo a day challenge when I had no prompts, but these are so fun to shoot, thank you for carrying on with this! (I’m publishing on twitter and instagram [both usernames durmik] and also on tumblr [outofmylens.tumblr.com], greetings from Poland!

  2. I’ve played along since I think April. I’ve missed some, but I try. My kids love to play long, too. They ask me almost daily what my picture of the day is. <3

  3. Please keep going (if you want to, of course!) – it’s such a great thing, keeping me inspired to blog everyday. It gives me something to focus on!

  4. I am so late to the game but I’m looking forward to playing in December. I’ve asked my 16 yr old niece to play along. She’s in Texas and is taking a photojournalism class. I’m in Italy and trying to improve my photography. This way we’re both learning together even though we’re far apart!

  5. Hey mumma 🙂 how do I get the list on my iPhone calander again 🙂 that really made such a difference for November 🙂 LOVE LOVE LOVE photo a day ❤

  6. I’ve seen lots of people in the blogging world participating in past “photo a day’s”. I cant wait to give it a try myself.. and December will be great with all the Christmas related photos you can use.

  7. love it! I’ve been participating in this month’s, which was my first one. It’s been so much fun! And it gives me something to blog about, which is especially helpful on those days where my brain feels like mush LOL.

  8. I’ve been playing since about July but have only just joined with Instagram in the last month and I love looking at others photos too as only a couple of my friends as doing this also..
Just wondering if you have the link for adding Decembers days to your calendar as this was super useful last month
Thank you so much for inspiring me

  9. I did it regularly in the beginning of the month and then it became difficult for me to stick to it. I might try the year-end month. Hopefully.

  10. Love these photo a day things! Such a great idea! 🙂

Do you ever offer awards or pick any favorites? First second, third places… ?

  11. I also vote for the calendar thingo again! It was super helpful!

Great list this month lovely, can’t wait to get going!

    {BTW,thank you for making the 13th lights, I can take pics of birthday candles!!}

  12. November was my first month of Photo A Day but it won’t be my last! It’s like looking at life through a different lens! Can’t wait to continue with the happy snapping in December! I know how mad busy it is (always, but especially in the run up to Christmas,) but wouldn’t it be good if you could continue to pick your fab 4? 🙂

  13. I started last month but ended up having a series of troubles. First headaches that finally pointed to a bad tooth… so root canal, then bronchitis after that. will try again this month. Hopefully will be a better month!! 🙂

  14. If Doug isn’t going to make a Calendar, I’d be happy to do it. I admin some other calendars, so wouldn’t mind adding this to my list. I’d update it every month when you post the list.

      • I just realized I don’t know the exact way that he did it, but what I was going to do is go to calendar.google.com to create one. It looks like that’s what Doug did but I’m not sure. It can be viewed in the browser or exported (for Android, we just save it to our Calendars and it automatically shows up in a list of calendars available to sync on the phone).

On the left side at Calendar.google.com, under the mini calendar, is the heading My Calendars. You click on the arrow/triangle next to that and in the pop-up menu there is an option to create a new Calendar. You just set that up, name it FMSphotoaday, make sure it’s public, and I think you can add keywords so people can search for it.

Adding the daily prompts is just a matter of creating an event for each one. Since the default is to make new events an all-day event, it only takes two seconds for each one, so about a minute for the whole month.

  15. I just stumble upon your blog and I love it. Such a great idea and I wish I would have found you sooner. This will be my first month and can’t wait to get started. I hope you are able to do a list a month for next year too.

  16. Hi Chantelle, count me in. I’ve been doing the #fmsphotoaday November and I’m going to try and do 3 project’s next month. I’ve also shared this on Google+ and blogged it. Karen

  17. I started in april and did really well with a photo a day (played catch-up on some occasions as I had a number of holidays & couldn’t always post daily) and then something happened in november – I ‘fell off the wagon’ but, I’ll be back posting a photo a day from friday (1st) and I’m really looking forward to the challenges….and some of them will be challenges as Christmas this year will be very different for us (we’ll be traveling around the north & south islands – new zealand) very much looking forward to the challenge; thanks so much Chantelle for inspiring us to ‘look outside the box’ 🙂

  18. For november you had someone making an app that made all the daily assignments on my calendar. Do you have one for December too?

  19. I started to play in May; but I got sidelined with stuff/life; but I am going to have a go at this again starting Saturday! 🙂

  20. I couldn’t find that anyone else had created a calendar yet, so I created a public iCal. Please let me know if you have any trouble with the link.

  21. Didn’t do November because i was in a slump… feeling better now and i’m looking forward to end the year doing this challenge :))) thank u for making the list & checking it twice <3

  22. Hi Chantelle! I’ve always followed others with this challenge and this time I’m taking the plunge for the first time! My camera and I are totally inseperable and now my four year old daughter wants to join in and snap away too! I’ll be possting my pics up on my blog and Facebook. Mayeb I’ll even attempt to work out how to use Pinterest…
    Sophie xo

  23. Thanks Chantelle!! I’m in for another month. Havin’ so much fun with your challenge. Only missed one day in November! Let’s see if I can get all of them in December!! 🙂 xoxo

  24. This will be my very first time playing, but a few of my twitter friends have been doing it all year. I was going to wait until next year, but I was afraid that you wouldn’t be doing it again. I hope I can keep it up all month. Wish me luck!

  25. This is a first for me. Figured I’d start with a month before going all the way with a 365 project. Among other reasons, this is meant as a bit of a kick in the butt for me; I love making all kind of things creative but I never put anything ‘out there’ for fear of criticism. So 🙂

  26. I have been playing along since June this year, and I have to say “Thank You for the fun and distraction from everyday life”! Your Ideas are fresh, fun and sometimes they make me feel young again. Thank You!
