About a year ago everyone was going workout crazy. I remember writing about how everyone I knew on Facebook {slight exaggeration because my Uncle John and distant cousin Rach hadn’t joined the revolution, so not everyone} were running marathons, working out, building muscle and losing weight. I don’t know if it was that time of our lives where most of my mates had stopped procreating and started focusing on themselves more, or if there was just something in the air.

This year it’s all about wholefoods and green smoothies. I can’t go a day without seeing someone’s chia infused green juice in a jar. Have you noticed?

I’ve always loved eating whole foods. Going to the markets and picking up fresh produce is one of my favourite things to do, and talking to the people who bring the food to the markets. Real food, from real people. There’s a guy at my markets who sells avocados. Each Saturday he gets up at crazy o’clock {2am-ish} and picks avocados and herbs for his stall. He sorts them into sizes and sells them. I’ve never seen anyone so passionate. I grab 3-4 every week, and the way he hands those avocados over to me are like they’re little newborns. He always says, “I removed the eye from this one for you. Eat that one first.” By the way, they’re the best avocados you’ll ever eat. {Also I know that sounds like he actually removes eyes from little newborns, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t do that!}

And I have to admit, Hubby and I have dabbled in the old green juice. We throw everything into the Thermomix, kale, cucumber, apple, ginger… whatever is lying around and whiz it. We don’t drink from jars, but I’m a bit obsessed with them.

The team at EasiYo sent over a kit and asked me if I wanted to make my own yogurt and share it on the blog. Make my own yogurt? I thought. So I read up on it. Making your own yogurt is easy and assures that you don’t have any nasties in it {no artificial colours}, plus you get all the lovely live cultures when you make it at home. So I made my own yogurt.

I’ve been off dairy for a little while now, because it was making Luella colicky {through the breastmilk} but my Naturopath suggested I start introducing it back in with good quality dairy {i.e. not chocolate thickshakes!} so I decided to dabble in the yogurt. I’ve been missing my homemade yogurt herby sauce so I made that. Sometimes we’ll roast a chicken, other times I’ll just grab a free range one from the supermarket and save myself the hassle. They go together like green smoothies and jars, I’m told.

My own personal experience with the EasiYo Make Your Own Real Yogurt kit? I’m impressed. We always buy good quality yoghurt that sets us back almost $10 a tub. We have it with savoury dishes or with cereal or muesli for breakfast. I didn’t know I was going to be so impressed. The yoghurt is creamy, thick and tastes goooooood. Hello dairy! And I think it’s more affordable too, plus the whole family gave it the thumbs up. I can’t wait to try some other flavours. I know a few family members who might be finding a starter kit under the Christmas tree {they’re only $25 so it’s a sweet gift!}.

Ingredients

1 cup Greek yogurt {I used the EasiYo one I made at home, this was full fat but they have low fat too}
1/2 cucumber, grated {and squeeze out the excess liquid after grating}
1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Salt & pepper, to taste

Method

♥ Combine everything in a small serving bowl. Mix to combine. Serve with roast chicken, and a side of salad. This one is perfect.

I’ve got 5 EasiYo Starter Packs to giveaway to five lucky Australian readers. All you have to do is leave a comment below and tell me what your favourite flavour of yogurt is to be in the running. One entry per person and competition closes this Sunday at 11:59pm. {Aussie residents only, sorry!}.

  1. My favourite yogurt flavour would have to be mixed berry. What’s not to love about raspberries, blueberries and blackberries combined, yum.

  2. Greek, I add honey and slivered almonds for breakfast each morning! Healthy, protein and yummy! My little man and little lady well strawberry of course! Thank you for the chance to enter!

  3. My favourite yoghurt of all time was a lemon cheesecake flavour I had in London a decade ago. The best recently was homemade banana yoghurt icecream made with natural no fat yoghurt, frozen bananas and honey.

  4. I’d have to say that my favourite flavour is plain full fat yoghurt. Probably because its so versatile and we use it a LOT with savoury meals, add chopped mint or chopped cukes for use with hot and spicy food or a spoonful of tandoori or other curry paste to marinate lamb or chicken and grill – or add it to my morning smoothie with bananas or mangoes for a sweet hit.

  5. I have always seen these at the supermarket and wondered if they were any good, I had just never taken the leap to try it – now I am on a mission to get fit and healthy and lose my baby weight (bub is 11 weeks old), I think now might be the time to take the leap!
    My all time favourite yoghurt flavour is without doubt Greek yoghurt with fresh passionfruit – yum!!!

  6. Yoghurt is a staple in our fridge!! Natural for cooking and fruity delicious flavours for lunches and snacks! We even freeze it into icy poles for summer treats!! Would love to try EasiYo – can’t believe I haven’t before now!!

  7. I just like a standard plain yoghurt but would love this because I’m about to start renting again and could use some more gadgets in the kitchen (a juicer just isn’t enough ;))

  8. A huge fan of greek youghurt at the moment. It’s so versatile the way it can be mixed with anything and everything. My favourite is probably a spoonful (or four) with some mixed berries… Heaven

  9. i wonder if it could be made lactose free…i love plain yogurt sometimes and other times add any fresh fruit…

  10. I love Vanilla yoghurt. It is so versatile, you can have it with cereal in the mornings like I do, with fruit as a dessert… and sometimes I just love a dollop or two as a snack!

  11. Vanilla would be my fav- that way you can add all sorts of gorgeous summer fruit to it! Mangos, black berries the list goes on and on.

  12. My favourite flavour of yoghurt is french vanilla. I’d make the best vanilla yoghurt with one of these and vanilla beans. Mmmmm…. vanilla beans…….

  13. I love greek yoghurt with coconut and also greek yoghurt with honey is great too, they both work well with fruit for breakfast and greek yoghurt and honey even converted my teen whose fav flavours were the fake fruit types! Ew!

  14. I’ve always wanted to try EasiYo. Like you Chantelle I tend to buy the more expensive yoghurt. My favourite is the Chobani range. So yummy but expensive and we go through so much! My favourite flavour is blueberries 🙂

  15. I love full fat Greek style yoghurt – and adding my own flavours to it such as honey and rosewater essence with nuts – YUM!

  16. Unsweetened Greek Yogurt! (Organic, too, if I can get it!!!) Goes with {almost} literally everything!

  17. I do love a honey yoghurt personally! We go through 2kg of quality yoghurt a week so this could come in super handy!!!!

  18. I’m actually not a dairy fan but my toddler thinks ‘gogo’ is about as good as it gets. I’ve only ever given him natural, unflavoured stuff and put fruit on top.

  19. I am addicted to peach and mango yoghurt, as long as it’s creamy and has big chunks of fruit through it, delicious!

  20. Apple Yoghurt – very hard to find these days, but if you can pick up a tub, it’s the most devine thing, soft yet crunchy pieces of apple with smooth vanilla yoghurt – THE best!!

  21. I’ve always wanted to try these!! My faves are natural/Greek or vanilla, and I add my own ‘flavour’ with fresh fruit

  22. B-D Farm Paris Creek Bush Honey & Vanilla. It’s local, so very yummy and just plain good! Would love to have a go at making my own 🙂

  23. Sounds like a pretty cool idea, its always good to know what we are putting into our mouths. I may be a little boring but I like plain natural yogurt because I use it in savoury dishes – to cool down my Indian curry or as a side dish with spicy kebabs

  24. My favourite is either berries or natural with some honey…yum. Ive seen packet yoghurt at the supermarket but haven’t been game enough to try…might just do so now! Thks for the heads up….!

  25. Oh i’d love one of these starter kits… please!!! Pick me pick me! I have been wanting to get one for ages, but keep putting it off, there’s always something that seems more important to buy. I love to make our own food from scratch and avoid all the unnecessary ingredients and this has been something i’ve been wanting to add to my repertoire for a while. My favourite flavour is passionfruit!!

  26. I looove plain Greek yogurt. Not that Chobani, flavoured, pretend Greek yogurt but the smooth, thick, tart, authentic Greek. So good. Throw in some crunchy muesli or granola or even just dip chopped up fruit in it. And now I want some. Yummy!

  27. I love Vanilla…I love to put it in a bowl with a cut up green apple (skin on still), sultanas, cashews (or any nut you like) and coconut…delish 🙂

  28. I love a good, thick Greek yogurt with any type of berry flavour although I have become quite partial to cherry as well!

  29. I’ve been off dairy for ages too but i’ve wanted one of these for even longer! Greek is my favourite (particularly with savoury) but I also really want to try making coconut yoghurt 🙂

  30. We are a natural yoghurt with puréed fruit family, raspberries, strawberries, mango, passion fruit, bananas…the list goes on.

  31. I love mango yoghurt with macadamia pieces. When I’m feeling extra decadent, I top it with grated dark chocolate.

  32. I’m a big fan of Greek plain yoghurt, it’s so versatile and can be used in anything, you can add anything to it to make it any flavour you like. Would love to make our own and get rid if the nasties in store bought! x

  33. I would say that my favourite flavour is a mixed berry yogurt, preferably with a few chunks of fruit mixed in, I love that burst of fruit that goes with a smooth creamy yogurt.

  34. Wow, this post brought back some memories! My mum had an old-school EasiYo when I was a kid and we loved creating all sorts of crazy combos – sprinkles, choc-chips, marshmallows and even bubblegum made it into the EasiYo at some stage! But my favourite was always peach and honey made with fresh peaches from the tree in our backyard, yum… 🙂
