A Practical Parent.

I

was asked earlier this year to be interviewed for Practical Parenting magazine for a feature they were doing on child care options. They were interested in my life as a Mummy Nanny.

After getting the okay from my employer I was interviewed, and the next part was having a photo done. It’s hard to get the kids all together in the one photo, so we finally found a 10 minute window where we’d all be in the same place, just before the sun went down.
We set up the camera on self-timer, on a chair in the backyard. The first photo the camera slipped and we all leant to the side to attempt to get into the shot. The next the dog stood right in front of the camera, which had us all in hysterics. Eventually we got a photo.
You can read more in the current Practical Parenting magazine about my day-to-day life as a Mummy Nanny, and how I juggle five kids.
And for those that asked, here is the little camera that Lacey has. It seems pretty durable, and the photo quality isn’t brilliant… but man does she have fun taking photos with it. It’s Fisher and Price… and like everything, I don’t like paying full price so I bought it on eBay.

I hope you’re all having a lovely Thursday. I feel so out of the loop at the moment… not having time to visit all your blogs and catch up on what you’ve been up to.
If you feel up to it, and want to quickly share… in a paragraph what’s happening in your life at the moment? Update me on you. Please. xx

  1. wow you must be a busy lady with 5 to look after!

We have spent today planning what we will make the grandmas for mothers day, now we just have to get supplies! Other than that we have just been making the most of the lovely autumn weather, lots of beach walks and playing in the garden- bliss!

  2. I am definitely going to check out the article.

Speaking of childcare options, BuBba started daycare this week and today is an emotional recovery day (for me mainly). We just got back from a lovely long lazy lunch and play in the park.

Who knew putting your child in to a stranger's care could be so tough???

  3. Hey Chantelle- lovely photo. I'm doing some sewing today, and about to pick up the three-year-old from pre-school, and then I'm going to get ready for my work day tomorrow-writing my back-page column for…Practical Parenting Magazine! Small blogging world, or what? I haven't seen the current issue yet though so look forward to reading your story. x

  4. Hi Chantelle,

Love Lacey's camera! My daughter is always wanting to take photos, so I can't wait till she is old enough that we can buy her one of those 🙂

What am I doing today? Well, I am packing the house, as we are about to put our house on the market. My little girl has gone to day care, so that I can actually get something done. I am missing her like crazy, though. Feels strange to be at home all alone, though the quiet is a nice change 😉

Look forward to reading the article!

  5. Hi Chantelle,
Congrats on the article…I will have to grab a copy of PP for a read 🙂

    I love love love Lacey's camera….definitely on my 2yr old's Christmas list 🙂

This week in my life – I stayed home all week with a sick little girl…a bad bout of tonsilitis 🙁 I hate seeing her unwell…but she's on the mend now 🙂
I also have officially started my business online, check out: http://www.scissorspaperrockdesigns.squarespace.com & be apart of my blog 🙂 I'm just about to add some free downloadable/printable gift tags for you all on my blog!
Bubbles – the first day Ella went to daycare was a VERY emotional day for me..so I know how you are feeling 🙂 Hang in there…it gets easier!
Have a great weekend Chantelle 🙂

  6. Go you!

Well you already know, but my life's a bit like yours at the moment- lots going on – chasing my tail, spending lots of time in my kitchen!

I have made the rounds of a few blogs today but I'm dreadfully behind!

  7. Hello!
Today I dropped my daughter at day care, drove to work, wrote a marketing plan and am about to interview someone for a job. Leaving soon to pick up my little one then we will go home and play while I make dinner! I work 3 days a week so its a nice balance. Your blog is a secret special of mine to visit while I am at work 🙂 shhhhhhhh

  8. Hi chantelle
I'm off to pick up a copy of that magazine now. I see you hiding in the back of that photo – but what a lovely family they look.

Speaking of childcare Raya started her first days at childcare this week and while orientation went well – the real deal has been accompanied with lots of tears, extreme clinginess and tears at bedtime. Heartbreaking.

    Enjoy the long weekend

  9. You're a brave woman with 5! I struggle with one 🙂

Today I'm pretending not to be reading your blog at my desk, waiting very impatiently for my man to get home tonight (he does 3 nights a week away from home – yuk!), thinking about how much food I'll need to cook for 6 tonight as I spontaniously invited 3 friends over for tea…everything but actual work!
But the day is nearly done, and its nearly time to get the boy from after school care, which is my fave part of the day 🙂
Have a great long wkend x

  10. You must be one organised mummy/nanny looking after 5 🙂 How lovely that you are able to have Lacey with you. My week has been taken up with making invites for my daughter's upcoming 1st birthday, settling a teething baby (wish that tooth would finally appear!!) and trying to empty my Google Reader of its 1000+ items 🙂 Hope you have a great end to your week. P.S Lacey's camera looks fab – will have to get Grace one of those when she's bigger! x

  11. Love the photo how big are all the kids now?????

My week has been interesting, layla changed classes today is a happy, bubbly girl this afternoon.
I went to p & C last night and was very brave and spoke my mind, it wasn't taken well but i am determined to keep being heard, there is a huge bullying problem and i am not willing to leave it.

Hope your life calms down a little soon.
    xx

  12. Am loving Miss L's camera. How much fun is THAT!

My week has been hectic at work. I have posted I think once since Sunday. Unusual for me. I have spent a lot of time on the couch at night. Lazy week nights… lovely.

  13. Ok must go buy practical parenting now, known you online for years so look forward to getting to know you more in a non stalkerish way!

What is going on here is busy with work and waiting waiting waiting on bubs to make an appearance.

  14. I'll check out the magazine! My daughter has the same camera, very funny photos!

My life is full on at the moment with study, getting ready to go back to work, settling bubba in to care and completing multiple assignments. Crazy but nice!

  15. I am going straight to ebay to get one of those cameras for my two rascals who are always beggin' to use mine. Uh hum…they are only 2 and 4. NO Way!! They would LOVE this. Thanks

  16. Is is a lovely photo – you're very photogenic, and you look so young. Ah, I remember those unlined days. I am thinking of telling T I want botox for mother's day 🙂

I am flat strap at the moment too. Started with a new client this week, and I have a feeling they are going to be v demanding. Wanting lots and lots of attention at the drop of a hat, all within their 10 hour per week retainer…. hmm.

And sewing. Ohmygoodness, I can barely keep up with the orders. I feel like I've barely seen my babies this week. And I haven't had more than 3 hours sleep in about a fortnight.

But very much looking forward to the loooooong weekend 🙂

    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Jenx

  17. hi chantelle,
can you please put the transcript from the magazine interview on your blog for us all to see, i would love to read it in full.

    thanks !
    daniela

  18. Well I have to confess,…I had no idea you were a nanny, don't know how I missed that one…thanks for the photo, that will help cement that into my head now!
What a gorgeous looking bunch of kids – yours included!
You are a busy lady indeed!
My little girl has croup at present – not nice, and apart from looking after her, I have been sewing as much as I can for a market looming.

  19. I read your blog daily and I read that PP article when I got it in the mail on Wednesday and it didn't click that it was you!
    congrats!
I have been emailing PP for awhile now wanting to get my daughters birth story in. I just LOVE reading and PP and blogging is definately a passion of mine.
Good job you certainly have a great talent.

  20. Hi Chantelle, Bought my first ever copy of Practical Parenting to check out your interview. You are a super woman and the magazine will keep me busy for hours!
My nearly 2yo had usual day care Monday and I have now found out has a boyfriend called Adam! It's all she says for the last couple of days. She also had first Kindergym session on Tues and loved it!

  21. Hey Chantelle – So glad you told us about this, will pick up a copy too. I feel like you and I must be the only mummy nanny's out there! Do you know of any others?

I look after 3yo, 5yo, 7yo sisters and of course my little Izzy. I only do 1.5 days a week though. Anymore would be too much with that age range! xx
