What To Do When You Get A Dreaded Cold {plus my favourite chicken soup recipe and a giveaway}

Have you had a cold yet this year? Did you know that us adult Aussies get on average two colds per year? And children get on average 6-8 colds per year. Ugh. That’s a lot of feeling miserable, and nose-blowing. When I get hit with a cold, all I can think about is how I wish for my normal health to return, and to get back to normal life. I’m sure I’m not alone, am I?

So if we’re all due to get hit with two or more colds this year, what are we gonna do? Besides be all miserable, I mean. Ideally, I’d lie in bed and watch Sex and the City re-runs for days… but I have work to do, kids to look after and a house to run. Who has time for colds?

Many of us head to the chemist when we get a cold, but most of the products only treat the symptoms. A brand new product around this winter can help stop colds up to two days earlier when used at the first signs of a cold, so you can get back to normal life. Meet mundicare Cold Defence Nasal Spray. It’s powered by Carragelose, a natural ingredient derived from red seaweed, which captures the cold virus in your nasal lining. It’s also preservative and steroid free and can be used when pregnant during breastfeeding and even in children as young as one.

I know this is hard to do, especially when we’re busy mums but you have my permission to rest. Ask for help. Get your partner to do more things. Serve noodles or toast for dinner. Or do my favourite thing, get everyone in their PJs and head to bed for a movie marathon. Your body is telling you that it needs to rest and recuperate, so do it!

Pop this chicken soup into your slow cooker, and enjoy the comfort. Chicken soup makes everything better, and this one has all the comfort with pasta in it, and the dash of miso takes the flavour up a notch.

1 onion, chopped
2 carrots, sliced
2 stalks celery, diced
4 cups chicken stock
500g chicken lovely legs
2 cups pasta shells
1 tablespoon of white miso paste
salt and pepper to taste
1 handful parsley, chopped
Grated parmesan, to serve

1. Place all of the ingredients, except the pasta, miso paste, salt and pepper and parsley into your slow cooker. Cook in high for 4 hours, or low for 6-8 hours.
2. Remove the chicken lovely legs from the soup once cooked, and remove the meat from the bones and shred the meat. Return to the soup. Add the pasta to the soup and cook for another hour on high. Add in the miso paste and stir through.
3. Serve with parsley and Parmesan.
