No Cook Playdough.

We {or actually Santa} bought Lacey some playdough for Christmas.

Big mistake.

 On the first day there was little bit of gooey stuff everywhere. On the second day she learnt to roll teeny little balls of dough and throw them all over the place. On the third day she whinged and sooked until we gave her the playdough, and then on the fourth day I threw it all in the bin.

Mean mum? Yes. Almost two year old little people are the most persistent kind of people I’ve ever met. I knew there’d be another day when we’d meet playdough again, but right then, I’d had enough.

My Ma {Gaga} has a stash of playdough at her house, so everytime Lacey goes for a visit it’s all about the playdough. Doesn’t she get it everywhere? I asked with a hint of concern for Ma’s brand new beige couch.

She’s actually really good, she keeps it in the one spot, Ma promised me.

Lacey hasn’t been very well the past couple of days {think vomit, whinging, high temperatures and very little sleep} so I wanted to treat her to something fun. I was bringing back playdough.

I had everything in the cupboard to make it, and only green colouring so we made a batch of no cook playdough that I found over at Kidspot.

It’s so easy to make and apparently lasts for 6 months if you keep it in the fridge. We already feel as if we’ve made enough balls and sausages {that sounds rude, doesn’t it?} to last a life time, but she’s having so much fun. And I guess that’s what matters, doesn’t it?

Here’s the recipe:

2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
4 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 cups boiling water
1 tablespoon oil {I used rice bran because I had it, but vegetable would work well}
Food colouring of your choice

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl {no need to sift}
Combine oil and water, and slowly pour into dry ingredients.
Mix until dough comes together.
Add colouring and knead.
Refrigerate until cool.

  1. Home made playdough is a huge hit in our house, especially as Miss Almost 4 can help. Oh, and if the baby eats it, I'm only worried about the food colouring!

  2. We do the homemade too. All in one colour at a time usually.

    (I am pedantic. I get very fretful if the colours get mixed up…..there are only so much grey playdough one family ever needs.)

    So we are currently ditching the banana yellow for cherry red…..

    Glad Lacey is enjoying….

  3. If you wrap it in glad wrap before you put it in an air tight container it will keep for even longer.

    It's so simple to make and they love it so! We love making play dough in our house. Oh, and they always listen to Nanna (GaGa) better than Mum.

  4. If you add a drop or two of essential oil it smells nice too. Lavender was always a favourite here. Glitter makes it fun as well!

  5. Thanks as had not heard of the “no cook” option.
    I only ever make our playdough but dread that RSI inflicting stirring action over the high heat .. not to mention the mess on the pot and the strange smell…??!

    Will try this soon…

  6. I like the helpful info you provide in your articles. I will bookmark your weblog and check again here frequently. I’m quite sure I’ll learn plenty of new stuff right here! Best of luck for the next!
