May Photo A Day 2014: The list by the Love Mae team

Woah.

What a week. Last night we got home from a little under a week away in Sydney. My sister got married, and I got to play chief bridesmaid and Lacey got to play flowergirl. I’ll share it all later this week, but I’m not exaggerating when I say it was the wedding of the year {maybe even century}. It was amazing.

But you’re probably here to read about the photo a day list and not weddings, parties or anything. So more on that.

This month the lovely team from Love Mae are celebrating their 5th birthday, which is pretty exciting. So it made sense to put them to work now that they’re the ripe old age of 5 to create the May Photo A Day list. If you haven’t met Love Mae yet, they do really beautiful decals, wallpaper, dinnerware and more that has a lovely, whimsical feel. Happy birthday guys and thank you for creating this most beautiful list.

May Photo A Day list 2014 Join us and snap along! If you’re new to this thing, everything you need to know to play along is below…

HOW TO PLAY PHOTO A DAY

Playing photo-a-day couldn’t be easier. It really couldn’t. Here’s how to play:
Grab your camera or phone or photo-taking-device.
Look at the monthly list to find the prompt for the day. {The number corresponds to the date of the month}.
Take a photo using the prompt as inspiration. So for March the prompt for day 1 is ‘yellow’. So take a photo of something yellow. Colour prompts are my favourite, it’s fun to see all the photos in the hashtag turn yellow.
Now you’ve taken a picture, it’s time to share it. This is the fun part. You can share to whichever social media platform you like, for me I like Facebook and Instagram best, oh and Twitter too. Make sure you add the hashtag #FMSphotoaday to your caption so people can find you, and others know what you’re doing.

If you’re sharing on Facebook, you might like to join our Facebook group. It’s a big, lovable community of photo-taking-people. Click here to find it.
Now you’ve shared, check out other people’s photos. You can check out the #FMSphotoaday hashtag on Instagram or Twitter to find them all. OR look at the Facebook group. It’s nice to comment and get to know other photo-takers too. We’re a friendly bunch.

WHERE TO PLAY

I’ve touched on this above, but there are loads of places for you to upload your photo-a-day photos. Here’s a bit more details:

Instagram: Just upload your photo, and add a caption and the hashtag #FMSphotoaday and then share.
Facebook: There are a few options here. You can simply share on your own personal page, among your own friends. Or you can upload to my page’s wall, or to the FMS Photo A Day Facebook group. You can join it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/FMSphotoaday/ Now that Facebook has hashtags, simply add the hashtag #FMSphotoaday when you share your photos and you’ll be able to see which of your friends are playing along too. It’s cool!
Blog: If you have a blog, you could share each day or do a wrap up of all the photos at the end of the month.
Tumblr: Add your daily photos to your Tumblr feed.
Flickr: You can get their app and share your photos there, or upload on their web version. We also have a photo a day group here.
Twitter: You can share on Twitter by uploading the photo and sharing the hashtag #FMSphotoaday.

HOW TO REMEMBER THE PROMPTS EASILY

I know it can be hard for people to remember to do photo-a-day each day, particularly for those just starting out. It takes 21 days to form a habit, so stick at it. Until then we have have these tips:
Come back here each day and click the button on the right-hand side to check out the list.
Right-click on the list above and save it to your desktop. Or if you’re on your phone you could take a screenshot and save it as your wallpaper. {To screenshot click the power button and home button at the same time}.
The lovely Doug has created prompts for us that we can download straight into our calendar, so we won’t forget. Just click on the below to get them in your phone. They’re ready to go right now. {If you subscribe already they should have appeared in your calendar}.

{These have accidentally been updated with April’s prompts. I’ve emailed Doug and he said he’ll fix them ASAP. Sorry!}

WHAT’S THE FAB FOUR?

Each day I spend some time scrolling through the photos shared on Instagram and Facebook, selecting four from each platform to put a bit of a spotlight on. The Fab Four isn’t a competition. There is no prize. It’s just a way to share some of the awesome photos being shared for Photo A Day.

On Instagram I’ll be sharing selecting the Fab Four with the lovely Nicole {@nicoledamario}. We’ll write ‘selected by’ with our username so you know who has selected which Fab Four for the day.

Over on Facebook the lovely admins of the Facebook group select the Fab Four each day. You can find it pinned to the top of the group. The admins are Leesa, Barbara, Sarah, Kim and Natalie.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE PROMPTS

The prompts really are up to your own interpretation. Don’t feel like you have to follow any rules. Do as you please. Some people like to know what I’m thinking when I create the prompt, so below is just a suggestion:

1. Begins with J: Share a photo of something starting with the letter J
2. Snack: Healthy or sneaky, share a picture of a snack today
3. Collection: Do you collect something? Show us? Or find a collection of something.
4. Us: Who is ‘us’? You and a friend? A child? Your partner? Workmate. Show us US.
5. 4pm: Whatever you’re doing at 4pm, snap a photo and show us.
6. From down low: Get down low and take a photo.
7. Taken from above: The opposite of yesterday. Take a photo looking down.
8. Blue: Find something blue and shoot it {with your camera silly!}
9. Favourite: It could be anything; clothing, person, food, book, song. Share it.
10. In the garden: Go outside and share a photo of in the garden. Don’t have one? Find one.
11. Mother: Happy Mother’s Day to mamas all over the world. Share a photo of a mother.
12. Ready: Share a photo of something that is ready, like a piece of fruit ready to be picked, a baby ready for a nap. You get the picture?
13. I spy: What can you see? Show us something that you spied today.
14. Lines: It could be lines, as in drawn or painted or on a person’s face, or a line or people. Or something else.
15. From where I walk: Where did you go today? Show us.
16. Create: Find something that’s been created or being created, by you or someone else.
17. Bag: A handbag, a school bag, a brown paper bag. Any bag will do!
18. Something I drew: Get creative! Share something you drew. {By the way, we don’t care if it’s not a masterpiece!}
19. Alone: Interpret this however you please. It could be a subject all alone, or it could show how you feel when you’re alone.
20. Waiting: How can you show waiting in a photo? Is it you in a waiting room? Waiting for the mail man?
21. Card: Find a card today and share it in a photo.
22. Free: Multiple meanings, you could show free as in something that costs nothing, or free as a feeling {i.e. I’m free as a bird}.
23. Black + white: Use a black and white filter on your photo, or take a photo of something black and white {like that zebra you’re hiding in your backyard}
24. Sunrise: Yes, I’m suggesting you get up early and see the sun rising. You only live once.
25. Neighbourhood: Share a photo of something in your neighbourhood. It could be a picture of your town, or something more discreet.
26. Pet: Share a photo of your pet. If you don’t have one… find someone elses or adopt a pet rock perhaps?
27. Meal: Breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. Which meal will you share with us today?
28. Unique: Unique means something unlike anything else. What can you see today that’s unique?
29. Negative space: This is a photographic technique. Read this post on how to achieve it.
30. Side view: Take a photo of something from the side.
31. Sunset: End the month with a beautiful sunset.

Have an amazing month! Go on. x

  1. hi my kids are 8 and 10 and would like to do the photo challenge. any chance of sharing their photos as they dont have a fb account.? or any other account for that matter?

    • That’s so cool. What about setting up a Flickr account for them – and just having it private – so they can see all their photos in one place but their is no social aspect of it?

      Otherwise some people share their kids photos in the Facebook group for them? That might be an option?

  2. I had so much fin with my first challenge in April. I’ll definitely be doing this again! Thanks for putting it together!

  3. Hello again, if my kids and i were all to do it, could I download all three photos on Facebook each for each day? would that work?

  4. Hello! 🙂 I’ve just downloaded the file to auto add the prompts to my calendar and noticed that the list see different? For the 1st of May I have ‘something purple’ listed (as an example)

  5. Hi. I am from Mumbai(India). Lovely challenge. I have just started it. How do I see the Fab Four on instagram. What is the hashtag for it. Thanks. I am @happy_shruti on instagram. Thanks.
