Zootopia Craft fun: Make the cutest diorama

Brought to you by Disney’s Zootopia.Disney fans, gather round. I've got the cutest, easiest Zooptia-inspired craft idea that is going to have the kids creative and happy! It's SO easy! Check it out.

OK, so we’re very clear that I’m a Disney-tragic, and I’m raising two mini Disney-tragics. We love anything Disney, so it’s a real tragedy that I haven’t yet seen Zootopia. For real. Lacey went with a neighbour to watch it, and I was slightly devastated that I lost my card/reason to go see the movie {although, let’s be honest I have watched Disney movies alone in the cinema before!}, but I knew I had to be patient and wait for it to come out on DVD.

The time seems to have zipped past though, because it came out this week! We’re planning a PJ party tonight to watch Zootopia. Popcorn will be crucial of course. I’m excited.

Last weekend Lacey and I sat down for hours and got our craft on, and chatted about the movie. One of the main themes of the movie is about breaking stereotypes, and that we can be whatever we want to be. It’s something I’ve always tried to tell my girls, and it was nice to talk about it again in a fun way. Lacey is adamant that she wants to work in a pet store when she’s older. It’s her dream job.

As for the craft, here’s how we got our craft on. It was such a fun, simple idea that anyone can do.

HOW TO MAKE ZOOTOPIA MINI-DIORAMAS

Remember dioramas? I made a few at school with old shoeboxes and I loved them. So I decided to introduce them to Lacey around the six Zootopia Districts.

WHAT YOU NEED

Old small boxes
Coloured paper
Scissors
Glue
Pencils or textas
Any old craft supplies
Doubled sided tape {go for the thicker tape so you can create depth in your boxes}

There are six districts in Zootopia, so you could choose to make one or six or however many works for you. We made them all, because it was a wet Sunday and we were having fun.

We found the best way to create them was to just cut out shapes and make it up as you go along. We got some little figurines from the supermarket.

LITTLE RODENTIA
This is the area where the smallest creatures live, with tiny, rodent-sized shops, houses and streets. I loved the pastel coloured buildings so wanted to include those.

SAHARA SQUARE
Inspired by Dubai, this district has sand dunes and buildings shaped like sand dunes, with a giant palm-tree hotel and a lake out the front.

TUNDRATOWN
This town was icy with hues of white, and various shades of blue. We cut the buildings out of white card, and then went crazy with the glue, later sprinkling white glitter for snow. It’s hard to tell in the photos, but it’s really quite fun. This one is Lacey’s favourite of them all.

THE RAIN FOREST DISTRICT
This district sounds like it would be natural, but it’s actually home to loads of giant jungle-green trees that mechanically suck up water from the river to create a steamy atmosphere. There are bridges, walkways and gondolas throughout too.

BUNNYBURROW
This is where the main character of the film, Judy Hopps, lives. It’s home to loads of beautiful green hills and lots of carrot farms too.

SAVANNA CENTRAL
This is the city in the movie, where the Zootopia Police Department is, as well as City Hall and Central Station. We tried to make it look like loads of high rise buildings in the background.

And that’s how we did it. It’s a great rainy day activity, maybe while you watch the movie. Or even a school holiday activity. Have fun creating, and watching. It’s now available on Digital, Blu-ray & DVD!

Have you seen Zootopia? Are you excited about checking it out, or maybe watching it again?
