We’re Going To The Zoo.

W

hen Steve Irwin died I was really sad. I had just walked down to do school pick-up with a baby that I nanny and a group of the Mums at the school told me. I was in shock and I got a little teary, an over-dramatic response for sure. “Oh, I’m sorry,” comforted one of the women, “Did you know him personally?”

I didn’t, and I didn’t know why I had tears. It’s definitely sad when someone so passionate and iconic passes away. When we visited Australia Zoo last Friday, you can tell that his passion and spirit lives on there.

{People lined up to feed the elephants celery}

We’re zoo type people. We are ‘friends’ of Taronga Zoo which means we can visit as many times a year as we like {for a fee}. We visit about once a month, more if we can find the time.
Australia Zoo is so different though. The animals are so happy and have such personality. There are so many staff members around, they’re really hands-on and passionate. Australia Zoo just oozes passion.

{Check out the drool on this guy!}

Lacey’s favourite would have to be the Kangaroos. We made Hubby line up to get Kangaroo feed from the vending machine for $2, which requires much patience. It was worth it though. Lacey loved feeding them. She has us in hysterics because the wallaby would stand up and she’d think his hand was out just for her to shake it. She was constantly shaking his hand. He wasn’t so happy when she went to shake his foot though. Cue tears.

{Despite being fed by people all day, these guys never seem to get full}

The barnyard animals were very sweet. There were two newborn little goats named Hamish and Andy which made for a laugh.

{Meet Spikey, Lacey’s new friend}

Entry to Australia Zoo is $57, which we thought was expensive, but once you get through the gates you can see where the money is being spent. The Wildlife Warriors show is worth the $57 alone. It had us in stitches of laughter, and is so well done. There were birds, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and more. It’s was unbelievable.

The elephants were so blissfully happy, which was definitely a highlight of our visit. They walked around the zoo, and then swam in their enclosure {which is massive}. They were hilarious, ducking under the water, making loud noises and just having a blast. I could have watched them all day.

What’s your favourite animal at the zoo? Why?

  1. how i wish we could have come… it looks like you had so much fun! il be in sydney tomorrow though so hope we can catch up while im there x

  2. I Love Australia Zoo.
    We live down the road from it and try and go at least once a month.

    The elephants are my absolute favourite, I love their calmness.
    I could stand and watch them all day if my husband would allow me.

    I also love how the tiger inclosure is always staffed with the tigers carers, with constant play and stimulation. You just know that every single staff member wants to be there.

    It's such an awesome place!

  3. We took the girls to Dubbo Zoo on the long weekend, which was great. Lucy loved the monkeys (cant remember which type), they put on quite a show when it was feeding time.

    My favourite were the giraffes. They had a few babies and they are just way too cute.

  4. Australia Zoo is fantastic!

    The animals are well taken care of, the grounds are lovely and the staff are great.

    We will go every year on our annual holiday until Abi is too told for it 🙂

    Great photos too hun.

    xx

  5. I think I have a different favourite every time I visit. Last time it was the giraffes, the monkeys are usually entertaining and I'm usually amazed a how graceful the elephants seem to be for their size.

    We are planning a holiday at the moment and are debating between QLD with a visit to Australia's Zoo or Adelaide to see the Panda's.
    From your photos I'm thinking QLD may be the winner

  6. I sobbed for a week when Steve Irwin died and I never know him either! He was such a bit part of our lives through that bloody Wiggles at Australia Zoo DVD!!!! Don't even get me started on the day of his funeral… *tears*
    I love what his legacy stands for, and I love the pics of your time at the zoo x

  7. My favourite is Australia Zoo! That place is so special and like you said, all the animals are happy and content and you can touch nearly everything there.
    I'm so happy that Lacey loved it (and you too)

  8. Australia Zoo is the best, we went before Steve died so we saw him being interviewed while we were there. My fav animals are the tigers and the elephants, so much fun to watch.

  9. Lacey's adorable & way too cute in that picture!! To be honest, it's been years since I last went to the zoo. Now seeing all these pictures, I want to go but will have to wait until it cools down later this year.

  10. I am so not a zoo or a Steve Irwin fan so when my DH surprised me with tickets to Australia Zoo last time we were holidaying in Noosa I was not excited at all. Well it turned out to be one of the best days ever and really was an eye opener in the great work of Steve, his family and the wonderful staff that are at the zoo – I was totally blown away by the place and even want to go back there again!

    Oh and personally I love a big cat – tigers are just such beautiful creatures I could watch them all day!

  11. Australia Zoo is wonderful, isn't it? We live close and have been 3 times in the last 3 years.
    I agree with you about feeling Steve's passion and spirit there, I felt it too.
    Elephants, my favourite, love them.
