The things I’d do for a dumpling

I love me some dumplings, maybe even more than I love my husband. {Shane, I joke! I do}. It’s the one thing my life has been void of since moving up North, and I haven’t failed to mention that to anyone that will listen. I MISS THE DUMPLINGS.

I was looking on Facebook on the weekend and someone had written an article about the ten best dumpling places in Sydney. I immediately wanted to reach through the screen and take to them with a fresh chopstick because WHAT ABOUT ME? IT ISN’T FAIR? I HAVEN’T HAD ENOUGH AND I WANT MY SHARE.

Oh the dumpling drama. So I googled, as I have many times before. ‘Best dumplings Gold Coast’. Been there, done that… tried the dumplings and didn’t fall in love. The struggle is REAL. So then I googled ‘Best dumplings Brisbane’. Have dumplings, will travel. I will!

And places came up, which I’ve seen before… but one came up that got my tastebuds dancing. New Shanghai was my favourite dumpling joint in Sydney, and I realised they were in Brisbane. An hour and a half drive, but anything for dumplings.

And you know what we did? We didn’t waste any time. The next day we drove up and had ourselves some dumplings.

It was so good. I just looked at hubby, after a xiao long bao had exploded down my top, and said, “I’m so happy.” It’s not hard to make me happy. Dumplings will do it.

On the way back to the car I took Lacey for a pit stop at the Parent’s Room, and I could hear a newborn baby cry from a distance, and as soon as I opened the door… there he was. His mum sitting beside him, upset and anxious. It all came back to me. Newborns are hard.

I washed my hands and asked if I could hold him. I cradled him and he stopped crying for a moment, but the poor thing was so upset and in some sort of pain. The poor mum just didn’t know what to do, because it was so out of character for him. I haven’t stopped thinking of them since. I hope he calmed down eventually. I’m sure he did.

And that was our adventures in Brisbane. Newborn cuddles and some dumplings.

This is the dumpling place, if you’re in Queensland and have got a hankering. Please feel free to tell me if I’m missing somewhere good.

  1. New Shanghai is my favourite. There’s nothing I can’t do with a dumpling in belly. And those hot, soupy, porky balls (AKA Xioa Long Bao) are the best. Now I want to eat dumplings for breakfast (yep, that’s a thing!)

  2. Gosh, I went there for the first time on Sunday night and fell in love! As well as delicious dumplings, we loved the pork belly and the lychee martini. Mmmmm.

    • Pork belly? I think I saw that on the menu but was blindsided by dumplings and couldn’t divert from it. I think Hubby and I are going to wrangle a date night soon so we can really enjoy it. x

  3. I love dumplings! In India, we call them “Momos”, and you can find many young men with roadside stalls, selling hot piping momos – chicken, veg, prawns, cheese, with very spicy sauces. Ah, so much nostalgia after reading this post 🙂

  4. Lucky for me, my partner makes one of the best tasting dumplings I have ever eaten, cause like you I do love me some dumplings

  5. If you’re ever in Adelaide, you have to hit up Dumpling King in Chinatown. It’s not a particularly ambient setting but OMG, the dumplings slay everything and they’re so cheap. I can highly recommend the steamed pork and the crispy wontons – dressed with the chili jam and soy vinegar sauce at each table and washed down with the complimentary green tea. Okay, now I’m emailing my friend to tell her we’re having dumplings for lunch tomorrow.

  6. Reading this has made me realise I haven’t had a single dumpling since moving to Bahrain nearly a year ago! It used to be a weekly ‘thing’ – and now no more 🙁 what I would given for a steamed char sui pork dumpling right now. Not been able to find anything worthy on this island 🙁

  7. I think I might be the only person in the world that has never had a dumpling, or if I have I’ve been drunk and didn’t know. Don’t tell anyone. Let’s just pretend I’ve had one. I think it’s the sloppy texture I fear, I like my wontons FRIED baby, xxx

  8. Thanks for reminding me about newborns. My youngest (our 4th) is 18 months old and becoming a real, mini person. So cute and enough to make me clucky. After all, it wasn’t all that bad was it???
