That one time {last month} I was on TV

That one time {last month} I was on TV

On a Thursday last month I went on TV. For some people that’s exciting and dream-type stuff. For me, well… it was an opportunity to absolutely FREAK OUT.

I knew for about a month before it happened, but I kept it on the down-low. I told Hubby and that was about it. Then I confided in my sisters, and a few friends, but that was it. I need to believe that no one was watching to survive it {even if it wasn’t true}.

The truth is that as much as public speaking and stuff like that scares me, part of me loves it and wants to do more of it. So when I’m asked to do something like this, 70% of my screams “NO, I CAN NOT DO IT”, the other 30% is yelling “DO IT! GROW! YOU’LL BE SO HAPPY/PROUD!”

Yes, I have conversations like that with myself.

So somehow I ended up saying yes, and I found myself in the cafe at Channel 9 with my sister, surrounded by loads of Channel 9 people. And you’ll be interested to know that I saw some newsreaders, and they DO wear business on top and casual on the bottom. It’s not pretend. One particular newsreader was wearing a super beautiful lace top, and some beach shorts on the bottom. {The photo below is when the cafe was quiet. I didn’t want to snap the celebs!}.

I was given the questions that Sonia and David were going to ask me, so I practiced and practiced and practiced what I wanted to respond with. My responses changed each time, but at least I knew what I wanted to say. Then five minutes before we went on, the questions changed slightly. I wanted to freak out, and did for about 3.5 seconds, and then my sister shot me a look to say, “You’ve got this! Don’t you freak out!” So I pulled myself together, and got on with it.

I was talking about something I’m pretty enthusiastic about, Shopping Small and supporting small businesses. I was sharing the segment with my new mate Janine. I loved that we could both freak out together, and then celebrate afterwards.

Sonia and David were lovely, and very professional. The set is small and messy. It’s interesting to see what it all looks like when you’re there. I’ve been on set before for another show, so I kinda knew what to expect. There are about 20 crew on set manning the cameras and others doing the social media, and a few make-up people too.

Before we knew it, it was over and we were done. I felt on a high for the whole day afterwards. I couldn’t watch it back, but I did just once since but mostly with my eyes closed and not all of it. I’m weird like that. {You can see it here}.

Have you ever been on TV? Would you want to? Or would it scare the bejeezus out of you?

P.S. You really should shop small this Christmas, where possible. xx

  1. It allllllllll makes sense now!!!
This is why Mia Freedman thinks the age of mummy bloggers is over!!!!!!

It’s because you’re all on Tv and she isn’t!!!! Hahahhahahah

  2. You were wonderful! So very well done. And I completely understand The Fear…

I did a piece with Mornings on 9 earlier this year and like you, told no-one until a few days prior… because that made it real! Sonia Kruger was on maternity leave so I was interviewed on the white couch with Georgie Gardner (who was gorgeous and lovely).

My plane/taxi/everything was so late that I nearly didn’t make it. Worst of all, I didn’t get my make-up or hair done! Just whisked in and on set in a panic…. and I was REALLY looking forward to TV make-up and hair.

Anyways – go you lovely lady! Scary but what a great thing to experience.

I also watched my appearance back only once, in the airport later that day on my phone, with headphones, cringeing and making weird scrunchy faces at the sight and sound of it all….

    • Oh gosh, that’s stressful! I flew down the night before because I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle any extra stress.

And when they said, “You’ll be right to do your own make-up and hair, right?” I was like, “Heck no!”

AND… I watched mine back at the same place as you, with the same cringe!!!

      How funny!

  3. I’ve done TV and radio a few times and love it! Although TV does make me wanna run to the loo ALOT! You did great Chantelle, you should absolutely do more X

  4. EEEEkkk!! So cool Chantelle! You’re a natural!!!! PS: your shop small blog pushed me to really commit to my local butcher and it’s been so good. We are enjoying more variety at dinner time and forging a real friendship! xxx

    • I love my local butcher, and that I have a new mate. Awesome that you are doing the same. It’s so simple, but awesome {some of those small business are really struggling, so it’s nice to know we’re doing something good}. x

  5. Does singing in the infants choir back in 1986 count? It was shown on TV. Then Yes – I am a total TV star haha.

    You aced it!

  6. You did a great job plus you looked fab. I was on Romper Room when I was five – my only brush with celebs

  7. Nice to be able to see and hear you on tv and get more of a sense of what you are like ! You did well, didn’t come over too nervous and made sense when you spoke 🙂 I would be frightened to death of it all but also excited as long as I was passionate about what I was being interviewed about.

  8. I was on Getaway when I was eight ? My family STILL tease me about my one and only line!
I had a major freak out earlier this year when I had to present a cooking class for some up and coming cooks, and by up and coming cooks mean my daughter’s kindy class! Freaked. Out. But I tell you what, I was pretty darn excited/proud when I it was all over and i had managed to get a whole room of four/five year olds to eat chicken mushroom and spinach risotto!

  9. I was on home and away a bit as an extra and I was on a tv show where I had to lie to my friends and convince them it’s true but I didn’t hear about the lie until 5 minutes before they arrive. Milsy was the host and Jackie O was part of it too. I had to pretend I started designing dresses and celebs were ordering them like crazy. But the dresses were shit and jackie o popped in to pick one up…it was hilarious but only my show made it to tv then it was axed. Turns out I’m extremely good at lying under pressure ?
