Sssshhhh Girl.

On the weekend I went for a manicure and pedicure. My lil sis and Ma came with me. So did Lacey.
Now taking Lacey wasn’t one of my brightest ideas. Hubby was home so he could have easily looked after her. It was just as we were about to leave Ma said Are we taking Lacey with us?
Mother Guilt kicked in and I thought. I should take her. I should let Hubby have a break. She will be okay. She might actually enjoy it.
Well… notsomuch. She wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t easy. All she wanted to do was dive into the foot spa. I missed out on getting my fingernails painted because doing that and holding a baby. Forgetaboutit.

Anyway, we were a little way through getting our nails down and the owner came from out the back. The owner is outspoken. Just today she said to the lady sitting beside us that her eyebrows were much too thick and she needed to do something about it. Nice.
As soon as she spotted Lacey she said: She have no hair!

I get a comment along those lines at least weekly. Quite often daily. Usually it’s more along the lines of: Where is her hair?

We’re getting savvy at responses now. Instead of looking dumbfounded, we’ll respond with either: It’s on lay-by, or We put in a request but it hasn’t gone through yet, or We’d like to know the same thing or Santa said he’d bring it, we don’t know what happened.

It was cute that day because I’m so used to being the one on the defence for Lacey, and today I was ready to just nod my head and say: I know, she doesn’t have very much hair.

But before I could say anything my usually quiet Ma piped up and in her kind manner, defended her: She has hair. It’s just fine. And blond. You have hair, don’t you Lacey?

Later on I heard the lady with the thick eyebrows and my Ma having a chat. The lady with the eyebrows said that her daughter didn’t have hair either. Eventually it came. I heard Ma ask: How old was she when she finally had hair?

The lady with the eyebrows said: Oh, about 6 years.

I’m going to have to think of a truckload more responses in that case! Grow hair, grow!

The next thing that came out of the owners mouth was: Why she so small?

By this stage I was over toddler-wrangling and odd comments, and I didn’t really hear so I was like: Huh?

All four people that were getting their nails done turned and said to me: She said, why is she SO small?

Me: Because she just is.

Owner: How old is she?

Me: She’s one.

The Owner gave me a puzzled look.

Me: One YEAR.

Owner: She so small. I think she is 6 months because she so small.

I give her an awkward smile. Awkward laugh. And continue toddler wrangling.

  1. my goodness some people are just so rude. i get daily comments about tom’s hair too, or lack thereof. It gets very boring!!

Why do people believe they have the right to be crtical about anyone’s appearance?

  2. oh I hear you! I get the opposite though – everyone loves to comment on how much hair Elka has.

Honestly I wouldnt dream of commenting bluntly on someone’s appearance, so why do others think its fine!

  3. Well thats a bit rude!

My neice didnt have hair until she was 18 months old, so hang in there. One day it just appeared. She is now 2, and doesnt have much hair, but you can see its there now

  4. Yep I get that too. Except I also get- she looks like a boy. Why is her hair ORANGE? That is the funniest hair I’ve ever seen! She is the size of my 3 month old. Doesn’t she eat?
So over it.Once I responded VERY VERY rudely. My mum even walked off she was so embarrassed. I said -so why are you so fat? The lady was horrified.

  5. Oh enough of the comments people. I always wonder why people give you every opinion under the sun about your children. Some days I am overly sensitive about it and other days I am ‘whatever’.

Lacey is a beautiful little girl and you can see she is happy and so in love with the both of you. Regardless of hair or size or whatever people want to say.

I get the hair comment a lot. One lady said to me I should really get Liam’s hair CUT because he looks like a girl. Come on!

    xx

PS. I’ve learnt only to take Liam when I get my toenails done but I think I am at the point where its easier to leave him at home with Rich

  6. My nephew was a baldy for a long time. I loved his bald head! Was quite sad when his hair started growing 🙂

    People need to just STFU….

  7. Hair is over-rated. We spend half our life growing it too long then getting it cut off too short and dying it too dark before lightening it too much.

You tell those rude people that Miss Lacey’s hair will come when it is good and ready, and when it does, it will be worth the wait. 😉

  8. My son finally has some fuzz and he’s almost 3. I didn’t either. I love bald babies and toddlers-they are too cute. Don’t let it give you a complex, your daughter is one of the cutest I have ever seen.

  9. People like that are awful!

My two sons had plenty of hair but my daughter had almost none. It started to grow when she was around 2 and at 3 years old it even passed her ears finally. I got the comments of “What a cute little boy! How old is he?” so often that I stopped correcting them and just said Erin is 2 (and in their mind they pronounced it Aaron). Now she’s 5 and her hair, after multiple hair cuts, is past her shoulders and just perfect.

I never got the so small part but instead my middle son (who was 29 pounds at 9 months) got the “wow, that’s a big baby” comments when nosy people weren’t commenting on his sister’s hair. Now at 6 he looks just like every other kid.

  10. Telle my sister was a baldy for years but now she has the loveliest thick, long, blonde hair and has NEVER dyed it. Worth it I’d say 🙂

  11. My sister was bald (hardly any hair to speak of) until she was 3, then it came in in heaps.I’m with everyone else. The comments are ignorant. I’d be afraid of telling people just how bad they are.

BTW…what are they expecting you to say? What other answer than “because she’s like that” are you to give?
