Sculptures By The Sea

T

he suburb we live in suffers from an invasion of sorts a few times a year. It starts with Summer and every Tom, Dick & Sally hitting our sandy shores, and then Winter slides by in a sleepy haze woken by 80-odd thousand fitness fanatics for the City to Surf. Lastly the last invasion is Sculptures By The Sea where thousands of people flock to Bondi/Tamarama to check out the sculptures.

I’ve learnt a few things during these invasions: Get out early and then get in, or preferably visit somewhere else. This past weekend we realised we couldn’t beat the crowds, so we joined them. We headed out early in the morning to check out the art at Sculptures By The Sea {as we do each year}. This year wasn’t my favourite collection. There seemed to be more rusty metal than colour {to my disappointment but still a great gaggle of talent.
I love looking at the sculptures and imagining them in people’s gardens. I know of a couple that purchases a sculpture most years and they look amazing in their home. Alas some of the sculptures are as big as our home. Sigh.
My favourite this year was the ‘life’ garden and the OMG. Check out the video above to see what we saw. You might notice Hubby sneakily flipping my the bird as I made him daggily pose near a sculpture {because everyone else was doing it & thought it was hilarious} and the number of people there were. I tried cropping them out of the shots… but it was impossible.
How was your weekend? Sydney-siders, did you {or do you plan to} check out the sculptures?

  1. Oh I miss Sculptures by the Sea. My favourite was lots of little flowers made from the tips of washing up gloves on a wet, mossy rock, quite close to the Icebergs. I don't miss the invasions though!

  2. I can't see the video either! 🙁

I miss looking at the Sculptures by the Sea at Cottesloe (in Perth) where they have them every year as well!

    xx

  3. Yes we did go and see the Sculptures yesterday. We got ourselves up early and started the walk before 8am which worked out well. Then had a yummy brekkie at Bondi Tratt before heading home for a morning nap 🙂

  4. I too live in a town that get invaded…. All throughout the year on the weekends. But so so much more in Summer and when Masterchef have Mr. Adriano Zumbo on… Parking is hard enough without all the extras…
I have never been to the sculptures by the sea and I couldnt see your video either 🙁

  5. Lovely video, makes me believe summer is coming even if it is a dreary, drizzly Monday. Going to see the sculptures next week , hopefully with fine weather.
