Psst: My Child Wears Crocs.

Our child was never going to stay awake past seven, own noisy non-educational toys or wear a pair of crocs. Not our child.

There were plans I had for our child when I was pregnant. Ideals I planned to put into place once she was here. She’d be in a nice routine, we’d walk everyday with the pram and I’d sing her lullabies each night, after I’d read her three books, of course.

I’d teach her sign language, learn how to crochet her a sentimental blanket and keep her away from television until she was three.

When she arrived it all went out the window. I forgot about any routines, and was too busy just trying to figure my new little person out and keep her healthy and thriving. That took up far more energy than I ever imagined.

And two years on, my child wears crocs. We used to laugh at friends who let their children wear crocs. We’d tease them, and let them know how daggy they were. Then one day we found ourselves at the shops with a $5 pair of fake crocs in our hands. That’s right, we didn’t even get the real deal, we got fakes. Sssshhh.

At first we told Lacey they were to be house shoes only. They weren’t to go past the front door. We bought them because every time Lacey wandered outside, her poor baby skinned little feet would be sore from little spikes blown from a nearby tree.

We hid them when those friends we once ribbed came to visit, and then one day she wore them to the shops. We became complacent and let her wear them whenever she liked, which ended up being daily.

It’s actually no big deal. Right? {That’s what I tell my hypocritical self, anyway}. She likes them. She can put them on herself. They’re easy. They’re not pretty, but they’re functional.

My child wears crocs, and I’m not particularly proud.

What do you do as a parent that you thought you never would?

  1. Haha, too funny because I actually found myself hesitating by a stand of Crocs just the other day 🙂

Still on the topic of shoes – I have said that I will never make my children wear a pair of brown “Jesus” sandles. I just hate them but nevermind that I can still wear gladiators lol.

And with regards to the no TV rule that I agreed with post-baby… we find ourselves watchiing In the Night Garden every night at BuBba's dinner time and I now know all the songs. /blush

    Have a great day!

  2. TV. I am a TV snob. I always said I would never use the gogglebox as a babysitter/entertainer. But honestly, I challenge anyone who had three under three not to use it. You'd be mad not to!

  3. Crocs actually look very very cute on a 2 year old! So I will forgive you for Lacey's fashion crime.

No babies for me yet, but they will be PERFECT. They will sleep when I want them too, eat ALL their pureed vegies and never ever cry. In fact, they'll even be toilet trained from birth, so I won't have to change any nappies!

    Or no?

  4. I think crocs are so cute on little ones. It's on the adults they get stupid. My sister worked in childcare for years and loved it when the kids wore crocs – if they get them muddy or stand in something yucky – just hose them off!!!

I'll be putting my kids in crocs and little tiny Converse hi-tops 🙂 They will run around in a Bonds singlet and their nappy when they're at home – such a cute little look.

    Clucky!

  5. Keeli was given a pair of crocs for her first birthday. They are her favourite pair of shoes, mine too since they can be hosed out when they get dirty, and they're the easiest shoes to put on and off her. I agree, they are daggy but she's 18 months old, she doesn't care, so why should I?

PS I also had visions of a cry-free baby who slept like an angel every night and never chucked a wobbly. But it was just a vision. Soon after I gave birth I realised I was in a dreamland!

  6. PPS We also said we'd never let her watch TV until she was older. We now watch Play School most days, along with some other shows like Hi 5. Keeli is so entertained by the singing and dancing… how can I resist?

  7. doesnt everyone do this? my thing was licenced clothing… im not keen on it at all! i swore i wouldnt buy it and audrey would not wear it – over my dead body – but eventually we ended up with dorothy pjs, disney princess plates and dora backpacks…

i worked out that small stuff just doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things and it bought her so much joy, so i just couldnt resist! as long as they are happy huh?

  8. Oh Chantelle, As I read this…it was like tapping into my own brain LOL!! I had sooo many 'plans' of what kind of mother I was going to be and what kind of a child I would have…and 2 yrs later…most of those 'ideas' don't exist haaa!!! When I was pregnant I said our child would NEVER sleep in our bed and would not have a dummy past age 1! OMG….Miss E is in our bed almost every night & still has a dummy to sleep with….whatever works I say!! And guess what? She also has those exact Cotton On Kids $5 crocs…and even worse….she wears them with socks in winter haaaaa!!!!
    But I'm a happy Mumma and she's a happy kid…so I guess it's ALL GOOD 🙂

  9. I don't have kids yet and like you Chantelle I have notions of having these perfect little miniatures of myself and my partner lol. I'm sure the reality will hit us very hard. I think crocs on a kid Lacey's age is ok, crocs on adults is flipping ridiculous!

  10. Yup. My 'never evers' seem quite similar to everyone elses!
I was never going to use the TV as a babysitter, never use a dummy, never take her to McDonalds and never let her wear ridiculous clothes with princess characters on them! So far I've only stayed strong with the last one…

Rules are made to be broken right?

    xxLou

P.S. Lacey is totally rocking those crocs 🙂

  11. I'm sure I did, though I can't remember for the life of me what they were. Once Crocs became popular I swore she would never wear them. Then, after a day with Nanna, she came home in a pair. Oh dear! They're great for preschool shoes in the summer though, I'll give them that! (even if feet do end up almost black at the end of the day from the sweat and dirt)

I think little kids look cute in crocs. They're functional and easy for them.

  12. I'm so with you on this one, I had a great laugh and also reading the other comments.
Sadie was not going to be a croc wearer, she even had a pair of baby havianas, (which her toe kept falling out of) last summer when we were at the beach I bite the bullet and brought what I refer to as frocs (fake crocs). It was love at first sight, she wears them all the time and uses them in place of her slippers. I must say they do rock my world after swimming lessons as Chucks are a hassle to get on a damp child.
Oh the plans I had when she was still on the inside……

  13. I think socks with crocs is a no-no!
crocs on adults is a no-no. But they suit a purpose on little ones and are practical for outside play. Rather crocs and then sandals with glittering carton figures any day 🙂

  14. We had several pairs of crocs as they seemed to be great for qld weather, until I discovered they are dangerous! Miss A was happily dancing on the deck…she kept moving but the crocs did not…much blood and a trip to emergency. Crocs in the bin and now banned! They are a badly designed product with crap soles.

  15. Oh, where to start!? And I've only been a mum for three months.

I had very similar goals to you, reading books, no TV, sign language, walking with the pram…

So far I walked every day for two weeks, then stopped. I read books a few times a week, but not every day. The TV is on permanently when we are home *shame* … she's not quite old enough for baby sign language yet. I'll let you know if that happens!

I think the crocs look adorable 🙂

  16. Ha! Were you invading my brain before you wrote this?

While I haven't yet got Master Two a pair of crocs I do just about everything else that I said I wouldn't. In fact it was yesterday when I was thinking to myself 'turn the tv off – he's watching something you said you'd never, ever let him watch!' but there was that smile and I couldn't resist letting him enjoy it.

Hey, I have chocolate when I want too!

  17. I adore you Chantelle – you tell it like it is and I love it.

TV is the thing for us. It's just easier to do pop it on in lieu of having him nipping at my heels when I'm you know, cleaning the house, preparing dinner and the like. Not that he sits and watches for hours on end (and yep, I know I'm justifying myself here and in my head) but it does help…and I actually do think he learns things from it too.

I think I judge myself by the things I said I would do and have rather than the things I said I wouldn't do. Having so many nieces and nephews I knew that “nevers” would be hard to stick to. It's the “gonnas” that do me in – both for myself and him.

    xo

  18. Another Croc household over here too. Quite frankly my house wouldn't run smoothly without the old rubber clogs! They are quick and easy and little hands can put them on very easily (they also take them OFF very easily…sigh). My visions and plans of raising my boy got lost the minute I looked in to his eyes and fell in love. All of a sudden the rest of it didn't matter.

  19. Crocs on little people are definitely ok. I think they look pretty cute. Crocs on big people however, are definitely NOT ok. Under any circumstance.

  20. Having succumbed to crocs with first boy, I was devestated when subsequent twins would not go near them. They would rather go out in a complete costume. We had a Mothers Day outing with a Dinosaur (complete with tail and balaclava) and a fireman – jacket and helmet. What a lovely post and I have enjoyed reading all the comments too- my favorite which I will be adopting is I was a good parent too before I had kids!! LOL

  21. Ha – yes, we also gave in – to the TV and the crocs! Thing is, I don't know where Miss 2.5 got her “Dora” crocs came from…they just appeared on her feet one day. I wasn't sure whether to cringe at the fact that a) they were crocs b) they were “dora” crocs or c) there is a child out there croc-less.

  22. As a parent, never say never. I don't think I had any hard and fast rules before I was a parent, but one which I was adamant about was having the kids sleep in our bed. My nephew, who is now 8 still routinely sleeps in his parents bed. no thank you. How on earth they managed a younger brother I don't know!
(who also sleeps in their bed)

As for everything else, its fair game. As long as its not hurting anyone, who cares?

  23. My boys have both had crocs. Fake ones (why would you pay a million bucks for something so ugly). Mr6 and his skinny feet hated them. Mr3 and his little plates of meat loved them. I like that he can put them on by himself. I think of them as thongs, only better for their feet. At least that's how I justify it.
