The one where I get all sniper-like in the supermarket

Brought to you by Coles Little Explorers.nappies

Sometimes being a blogger is just plain weird. Or maybe it’s being ME is just plain weird, and even weirder being married to me. Last week I told Hubby that I wanted to go to the shops, and compare all the prices of the nappies. Sometimes he doesn’t question my weird antics, and sometimes he just looks at me and asks, “Whhhhhhyyyyy?”

This time he didn’t question me. He just let me drag him around to our two local supermarkets, while secretly snapping prices.

In life there are a few grudges purchases. Things you don’t really want to pay good money for, but it’s kinda essential and you just do it. A handful of things are: petrol {HATE IT}, electricity, nappies and rates.

I did once try cloth nappies with Lacey, and that was all great until she was born and I realised just how much she pooped and wee-ed and I couldn’t keep up with it. Hats off to the mamas who do.

So on my stealth mission around the shops, I searched and snapped and compared. Instead of comparing all sizes of nappies, I picked the ones that Luella currently wears {she’s sitting at around 10-11kg – I hope she doesn’t mind me announcing her weight to the world!}.

My first stop was Coles, where I found the bulk pack of Babylove nappies. They work out to be $0.38 per nappy. I’ll be honest and say I’ve never tried these.

Still at Coles, I found the Coles Little Explorer nappies {a unisex nappy}. They work out to be $0.29 at their introductory price, and will will go to $0.36 per nappy when the sale finishes.

Then I headed over to Woolworths to compare what they had…

The Woolworths brand nappies {WOW brand} work out to be $0.38 per nappy. Again, I’ve never tried these so can’t vouch for their quality.

And then the old faithful, Huggies which sits at $0.52 a nappy. I’ve used these with all both my babies, and all the kidlets I nannied and they rarely ever disappoint.

The winner of the cheapest nappy goes to Coles Little Explorer. The bad news is that there is no trophy. I can send cake though.

Another observation? Supermarkets clearly shop at the same place for flooring.

I also tested out the Coles Little Explorer range to test it out for real, and I can report back that there were no explosions, leaks, and I even braved using it as an overnight nappy for 5 nights {and we all know that’s the ultimate test} and no problemos. A little research tells me that they’re made to be breathable, stretch with the way your child moves {because they sure do move!} and I know this isn’t relevant to me now, but the newborn range has a little cut out for the umbilical cord – GENIUS, because that used to rub Luella’s little stump and irritate it. It’s the small things! They’re also supersoft and have cute designs. AND they’re unisex. I had a little playdate the other day {not so little – TEN BABIES – and I set up a nappy station and was all like, NAPPIES FOR EVERYONE. I’m thinking if you had twins, one boy and one girl, you’d be pretty darn grateful for the old unisex nappy, no?}.

Coles Little Explorer range is brand new {just born if you will}, arriving last month, and will be extending to cover baby food, and they already do wipes as well.

What would you rather spend your petrol/electricity/nappy/rates money on? Shoes? Holidays? Food?

Note: I didn’t check out IGA or Aldi in this sniper nappy survey, so I’m not sure what they currently offer.

    • Maybe tmi but check out the moon cup or diva cup. I’ve been using one for about 5 months now, it’s a silicon cup that collects the l fluids and you wash it and reuse it. (Sounds gross but you’d be amazed how not gross it is when you use it). Period only lasts me 4 days now down from 7-8 and no cramps. And a one off purchase of about $25 means no more sanitary products in landfill in the forseeable future. Plus we run a septic system at home so it’s much more environmentally friendly.

      • I’ve heard lots of good things about them, but a big part of me is plain scared. I’m not good with bodily fluids. One day. Maybe! Thanks for sharing your experience. You’re definitely not alone. xx

  1. I used to check out the supermarkets for a good price for nappies when my kidlets where little so you are not alone there! Sometimes the price of the nappy doesn’t make it a good nappy. We tried out heaps of nappies to find one that worked. Oh the joy of spending our money on bills! I would rather use it on scrumptious goodies for the family at the supermarket, take the kids out for a nice meal and spend a little bit at my favourite store West Elm. I hate that all our hard earned money has to go to utility bills and not stay in our pocket so we can enjoy it more x

  2. I use Aldi during the day & huggies at night. I just can’t fault the Aldi nappies but will try the Little Explorers next to see what we think. Thanks for the research!

    • I used Aldi when Lacey was little but haven’t with Lulu. Let me know what you think of the Little Explorers. The pictures are cute, and that oddly seems to matter when you deal with them so many times a day!

  3. I would much rather spend our money on holidays which is why I am frugal with our money (Ok insert tight ass) the money we save on shopping we spend on fun family stuff.. like when my son turned 10 in Australia and then got in a plane and flew to Rarotonga and turned 10 again as we went over the date line.. the whole plane sang Happy Birthday to him, how many 10 yr olds can say that they turned 10 twice. LOL and he doesn’t want the fancy stuff he’s never had it being the youngest of five, he likes the weird and wonderful.. ask him about snorkeling with the silver tipped reef shark..Holidays get my vote every time.

PS: We use the Aldi brand for nappies for the Grand babies

  4. Mine are finally out of naps and I’m stoked! I wish I could say I have noticed savings but the money has just been sucked back into the vortex of our spending – probably at the supermarket, a place I’m addicted to! x

  5. Sorry if this is a silly question but I just had a jaw drop moment… When you say unisex nappy does that mean Australia have nappies designed for just boys and girls too? In the UK all nappies are unisex (or at least I’ve never seen girls only nappies and my little one is 16 months old.) ps we love Aldi nappies here too!

    • Sorry, I thought I replied! Yes, our newborn nappies are unisex but then after 5kg they go to dedicated gender nappies. I thought it was the norm around the world!

  6. Just an fyi, I buy my nappies online from nappy palace and they sell a whole stack of different brands of nappies (more nappies in a box huggies nappies compared to the supermarket boxes) the size that your little miss are in equals out to $0.46 a nappy.

    • Sorry lost half of my comment
Sex specific huggies nappies is purely a marketing tool. There is absolute no difference in the actual nappy itself- just the colours, pics & packaging. Australia is the only market in the world where huggies do this. I have a relative who works in the upper end of huggies 😉 we often get some free boxes of nappies. Hooray!!!!

  7. I’m in the US and for the most part I’ve found that generic brand diapers (especially Target brand) work really well for my son. Some poops up the back do happen but all of the other name brands give him horrible diaper rash.

I would rather spend our diaper/wipes budget on books, clothes, and date nights!

  8. I have used cloth on my 3 for the majority of their nappy wearing days, but now that my son is 2 I’m all disposables because he doesn’t go through as many & it takes a while to get a load of cloth ones to wash(& this skinny jeans don’t fit when he wears them!) we’ve used the Coles Comfy Bots for ages now & they are great. And they only cost $11 a pack!

  9. I’m a big fan of Coles Comfy Bots the no frills unisex nappies. I have been using them for my 3 children over an 8 year time frame, my 21 month old is in them now and what started out at $15 per pack when my daughter was in nappies 7 years ago is now $11 – 0.25c per nappy! I have a daughter & two sons and had no problems with them during the day or night and kids bottoms were rash free. I’d rather buy good quality leather sandals for my kids growing feet than expensive nappies!!

    • We use Comfy Bots, in walker and (now, at just over two months!) crawler size. Can’t beat them! I hope Coles won’t phase them out with the new range coming in. We also bought Snookums from a pharmacy recently in an “omg we have no nappies in the car, I’ll go and buy the cheapest they have” emergency, and they were fine, too.

      • That’s crazy that they got cheaper. I don’t think they’d phase them out, it doesn’t really make sense. The Little Explorers range is really beautiful though {sounds weird saying that about a nappy}, but really sweet designs and soft material.

  10. I’m throwing a “no nappy party” once the night time nappies are off! cannot wait. I too tried the cloth nappies, wanting to save the planet etc etc, then we had a drought! Nappy washing was a curse but also a luxury?!! haha! So I had to change of course 🙂

  11. I use aldi in the day and huggies at night but if I can’t get the gender specific huggies I just get the other and haven’t noticed a difference so I’m pretty sure they just colour code them to be annoying! I also work in a nicu and if the babies ever grow past newborn the only nappies available for all the babies are the boy huggies so who knows what the difference really is there!

    • Oh, maybe we’ve been fooled all this time! I am going to buy my sister some of the newborn nappies from the Little Explorers range. Do you guys fold the top down for the umbilical stump? I’m thinking that little cut out would be pretty cool.

  12. Love the new Coles nappies but I have been using the comfy bots one for ages….so much cheaper then buggies and the comfy not one come out of the same place at baby love anyway.

  13. I used MCN’s for the first 12 months until I went back to work (except for at night and on all day outings). Now I buy the HOMEBRAND (*Gasp*, I know) nappies, a pack of 50 for $11 and, in the (almost) 12 months I’ve been using then, I have NEVER had a leak. Won’t work for everyone, but they work for us, and if you’re looking to cut down on the cashola you spend on nappies, they are a viable option 🙂

    • Isn’t it funny that once you try a cheaper version that you realise that they’re reliable too. This experiment has been so interesting to me. I know it sounds like I need to get a life, but it’s been enlightening!

  14. Oh wow, I’m from the U.S and I’ve never heard of Diapers being called Nappies. Thats so weird to me, but neat at the same time. I’m expecting my first in January so we’ve already started a stock pile of diapers and already I wish we didnt have to buy diapers, id rather spend my money on other things like Books and clothes. 🙂

  15. Snugglers which are sold at BigW and discount chemists are cheaper than Huggies but feel better quality than supermarket brand ones, I ofen get them for $23
