Money Matters.

L

ast February I gave up shopping online for a month. There’s always that financial hangover after Christmas where we can’t bear to be at the shops any longer, but we’re lured by the sales. And now it’s even easier with post-Christmas sales online. There’s nothing stopping us with the ability to shop from the comfort of our own home, and in our PJ’s too.

Last February I gave up online shopping. My mailman didn’t visit for a whole month. Actually, if I remember correctly I did slip up on my no shopping ban. There was a Leona Edmiston dress that I had to have. It was on sale, and it was too good to miss. And you know what? That dress is still sitting in my cupboard, unworn. Tags still attached. There’s a message somewhere there, I think.

I was recently approached to be one of the Ambassadors for ANZ’s new incentive called Febusave. They’re encouraging all women to save money during February. I thought it was a brilliant idea, so I jumped on board. They’ve done all sorts of research, and gathered all sorts of statistics on how women don’t save enough money and don’t have enough for a rainy day. I won’t go into all the details {you can read them on their site if you like} because it will just make you feel bad, and you’ll just look at that gorgeous handbag of yours with disgust {and I can’t have cruelty towards handbags}.

You don’t really need to do anything, but save money. Pledge to stop spending money on something: lunches, beauty, travel, chocolate, coffee… etc. You can just say it on your blog, in my comment section, to yourself in the mirror, to the bus driver on your drive home or you can go over to ANZ and pledge there {and go in the draw to win $5000}. You don’t need an ANZ account, I don’t.

I am pledging to go without treats. As in any non-essentials. I won’t be getting any beauty treatments. I’ll be painting my own nails {and I’m hopeless, so this should be funny}. No lady lunches. No bottled water. Seriously, I’m tightening the purse strings. I’ll let you know how I’ve gone at the end of the month.

What do you pledge? Care to join me?

  2. I really should join you.
Maybe I will pledge to cook every single night in another effort to save money!
I make no promises but i am definately going to try and not spend on things I want rather than need!
    Enjoying your blogs!

  3. God, what a great idea! I was going to say chocolate. But that would just be silly.

I'm going to go down the same path as you, and pledge to give up non-essentials.

At the shops, I won't buy a coffee just for the sake of having something in my hand.

I won't buy takeaway pizza when there is a full fridge at home.

    I won't buy trashy magazines.

    This will be tough. xx

  4. i really like this idea. I already decided no new wool buying for several months but I think I can find somehting else to pledge. I need to pull the belt in a little. Good luck with your pledge!

  5. Good timing, just did the groceries & while i stocked up on ingredients for 4 x lunch boxes when school resumes in February, i didn't buy any treats. As a business woman, i tend to only shop for clothes once a month & the rest are groceries. I handmake all our gifts too, love Posie

  6. I've signed up on the website – what a great idea!

With a wedding to pay for and a MacBook Pro that I really want to buy, some savings are definitely required.

I won't be buying any lunches during February (why start then, no buying lunches from Monday).

Thanks for letting us know about this program!

  7. I pledge to spend no money of clothes until I get a job and have a decent income!

I just moved to Melbourne about a week ago and had my first real test when I was in the city yesterday – I reallllllllly wanted a dress I saw, but NO, NO SPENDING UNTIL I GET A JOB.

  8. I was actualy just thinking i need to stop buying crap and learn some self control
i pledge no more take out when i can cook a beter meal
    NO more clothes
and go through all my crap that i dont need
thanks for sharing this with us 🙂

  9. It's a great idea..I've been doing the 'Dottie Angel' handcrafted and thrifty challenge since September, my weakness is mags and books. So far I've managed to stop buying new clothes, and pretties for the house (lol).
    Good luck
    x

  10. I have been trying to simplify my life and spend less for a few months now, with little success. I think this is a fabulous idea and I am going to do my best to also not buy anything non-essential for the month of February. Good luck to you, too!

  11. I am very in on this challenge. I am not going to buy anything at all – new or otherwise – for the month that doesn't involve food.

  12. I've joined up too… just printed off my credit card statement to add up exactly how much I've spent in December/Jan – I think I need a wake up call (have “let myself go” a bit financially!)

I've joined up for Febusave.. I've pledged not to shop for all of Feb.. my DH will be DELIGHTED!

  13. What a fantastic idea…Hmmm…ok..Im going to think long and hard about this one..and make a “give up” list…thanks for the inspiration x

  14. Hmm. Okay, I promise that I will not buy any major appliances in February. I will not charter any jets. I will not buy any Christmas decorations. Oh, and I won't buy any coffees (I don't drink coffee). See, off to a great start! But seriously, I am doing the fiver challenge this month. I'm off to a flying start – February hasn't even started yet and I'm up to almost $100!

  15. I don't know how I missed this post. But I do pledge. Couldn't have come at a better time.

I pledge; no dining out lunches and no splurges on beauty care.
