Memoorrries: Childhoods are made of this {& 5 new Barbie DVDs up for grabs!}

This is a sponsored post for Barbie.Barbie1. Growing up in the ‘hood

I don’t know if we just got lucky where we lived, but we grew up in an awesome neighbourhood filled with kids. The lady who lived two houses up had grown up kids that had moved out and away, but she still kept a jar of lollies in her house for the neighbourhood kids. We’d go up, knock on the door and a lollipop would be given to us. She was particular though, you had to get your timing right. You couldn’t visit too often and you had to use your manners. She wouldn’t tolerate brats. {And of course I was never, ever one of those!}.

2. Best friends FOREVER
Next door in that very same neighbourhood lived my best friend Natalie. We spent as much time as humanly possible together. We’d swim in each others pools. She had a fancy above ground pool, where my dad had made a super fancy half in ground, half above ground pool. We’d go through phases with which toys we wanted to play with, but we’d always meet in the driveway with something cool to do that day.

3. Barbies for every one
Of all the toys we played with Barbies were the winner. With 3 girls in our family we had quite the collection. And no Barbie collection is complete without Ken. One day he’d fall in love with my Barbie, and they’d get married, buy a horse and Barbie would wear her most glamorous dress. Other days he’d marry Natalie’s Barbie and mine, well she was a little bit bitter. We donated all of our Barbies to my little cousins later on, and I’m quietly devastated that I didn’t keep them for Lacey.

4. The sleepover when you don’t actually sleepover
Remember that sleepover, your very first, when you assured your Mum that you were totally old enough to stay at a friend’s house, and you definitely would not cry? And then it got to night time and you got terribly homesick and had to ask your friend’s parents to call yours to come and get you. Or was that just me?

5. Your very first ever bike
I think when I was about 6 I got my first bike. I can remember it under the Christmas tree, with it’s little baby seat on the back for my doll. It was like magic. Years later, when I outgrew it, my Dad ‘made’ another bike for me. He got an old boys bike from somewhere and did a fancy spray paint job on it – splashes of white and pink. I rode it proudly around our streets, until some boys mocked me {well the bike and the paint job} and I didn’t quite feel like riding it anymore. Funny that.

6. That time your mum trod on your toy
She was mad, wasn’t she? It must have hurt. And now I know too, because those darn teeny pieces of toy are very ouchy, especially when you’re not expecting it, in the middle of the night.

Just as I grew up with Barbie as part of my childhood, we’ve kind of continued it on. Lacey has a few dolls, but is crazy about the Barbie movies. They watched The Three Musketeers are preschool and ever since she’s been telling me, “All for one, and one for all!” We’ve watched every Barbie movie, more than once. I like them for her because the storylines keep her interested, the messages behind the movies are often sweet and appropriate, and there isn’t a huge scare factor that keep her awake at night {like we’ve had in some other movies}.

This month Barbie are excited to be releasing a new movie, Barbie in the Pink Shoes. We were lucky enough to get an early sneak peak at the movie {which officially made me the best mum in the world, just quietly!}. It’s a sweet story about friendship, dreams, a little love, and a bit of ballet thrown in. It’s about following your dreams, whatever they may be. Here’s a little more about Barbie in the Pink Shoes:

“Dance your way to a magical adventure with Barbie as Kristyn, a ballerina with big dreams! When she tries on a pair of sparkling pink shoes, she and her best friend, Hailey, are whisked away to a fantastical ballet world. There, Kristyn discovers she must dance in her favorite ballets in order to defeat an evil Snow Queen. With performances to the legendary Giselle and Swan Lake ballets, it’s a wonderful journey where if you dance with your heart, dreams come true!”

I’ve got 5 copies of the DVD up for grabs for 5 lucky winners. All you have to do is leave a comment below answering the following question: What was your dream as a child?

For the full terms and conditions see here. The winners of this competition are: Callie, Falon, Karly, Jasmine and Sheree. I’ve sent an email to everyone, but Sheree Pallis I had to send a Facebook message to you. If you could check your inbox {it’s probably in the other box because we’re not friends} or just email me with your best postal details.

  1. My favourite film as a child was Breakdance, so this led to me having the dream of being a breakdancer!!!
Sadly, I have two left feet and no rhythm, so that dream never came to fruition!
I did practice for hours on end on a cardboard box under the carport though!!

  2. My dream was to live the life of barbie, she was so perfect and you couldn’t imagine there being a mean bone in her body. I was fortunate enough to have parents who liked to keep things so my 6 yr old daughter is lucky enough to have inherited my barbie collection which even includes the original 1980’s barbie bus/ camper van..

  3. I had a new dream everyday, mum, journalist, vet, shop owner… Mum, check! Business owner – almost there… launching my photography business in the coming weeks – super exciting!! I’ve got all my old barbies stored in our shed, hubby doesn’t understand me keeling them and grumbles at the space the bus and the horse trailer take up, but i know my little girl will love (laugh) at my old barbies and accessories.

  4. My dream as a child was to be a famous singer. Singing louder than the stereo, I thought I had the voice of an angel.. I still sing louder than the stereo.. Such a feel good thing to do!

  5. I think I just trundled through life happily. My dreams were fleeting, except the one of being astro boy, but it wasn’t going to happen.

I wanted a pool and when we moved house, the new house had one.

It’s strange to think of what I dreamed of being as a kid but I am now a wife, mother to three, home owner with an awesome vegie garden, I have one cat and 7 chooks, teacher when I am working, I can drive a car, still don’t want a horse even though my friends were horse crazy.

I think I am living many people’s dream and it fits me like a glove.

  6. My dream as a child was to have my own pony,i drove my parents crazy begging for one everyday. Now my 3 girls are doing the same to me….lucky Barbie has a lot of toy horses:)

  7. I wanted to be a vet on a huge farm where I could reduce every animals in the shelters.. Sadly I’m not & live on a small suburban block.. But I now rescue birds, heal them & release when well. It’s something my twin 4yo girls get into too.. Singing lullabies & ‘reading’ to the bird morning & night until well enough to go back to nature <3

  8. I loved Barbies as a child and thankfully I now have two daughters to continue the love with. As a young girl I loved singing in the choir but was really inspired by Barbie and the Rockers to one day release a really cool song. Unfortunately my siblings and I didn’t have any talents like the Jackson Five or other child groups, although I do remember one of the very pathetic lines from one of our made up songs. So here it is:

‘You’ve gotta turn around and touch the ground, boogie, boogie, boogie, ohhhhh yeah!!!!’

We dreamed of hitting the ‘big time’ with this one and being famous with lots of money$$$$.

Well at least now I can say one of our song lines has been published on a blog…AND not just any blog…Fatmumslim!! But I’ll stick to my day job now – raising three kids and running a travel agency – I may not have the $$$ or fame but still I think my dreams have come true anyway!

  9. My dream was to grow up and be a hostie (that’s what we used to call them). I went off that idea when a horrible in flight experience happened due to strong winds, the weirdest thing was I went on to meet and marry a man who worked in the industry and we used to fly all the time. Just hate take off and landings, therefore my dream sort of came true.

  10. My dream was to have a family just like the brady bunch. Coming from a family of 2 sisters, I longed for brothers and I just loved all of their adventures 🙂

  11. My dream was to be on stage singing. I’d get up on my uncles doghouse and pretend it was a stage and sing Donna Summer songs loud and proud. My dream came crashing down when I joined choir in middle school and realized I was TERRIFIED on a real stage!!

  12. I wanted to ride in the Olympics equestrian three-day-event. I was a horse nut, and completely fearless (and this is why my own kids will not, I repeat not, have horses. I should have seriously injured myself many times over), and then I saw sense!

  13. My dream was to live on 90210. My cousins and I used to pretend constantly that we lived in the Walsh house with Brandon and I was totally in love with Dylan! Part of it came true though because my closest friend’s name is Kelly. Ah living the dream!

  14. I’m a grown-up now but I still have dreams and aspirations. When I was very young I had an ambition to become either a kitten or puppy as they were cute and cuddly and back then I didn’t feel so cute and cuddly myself. I grew older and a little wiser and realised that was not to be so I would then dance and sing out the front of our house hoping a talent spotter would drive past and ‘spot’ me! That didn’t happen either, so, for a number of years I became a ballerina until I grew tired of that too. I do believe though that my biggest passion was swap cards. I loved them and had album upon album. I would sit and trade with friends all the time. Even now when I see them I get that little thrill of excitement looking at pictures and pairs and horses and dancers…..

  15. When I was young I wanted to work in a chocolate factory! (In fact I still do, lol!) 😀
I watched a TV show on the Cadbury Chocolate Factory when I was a kid and it showed the workers taking home huge boxes of broken Easter eggs, I thought it was the coolest thing ever! 🙂

  16. My dream as a child was to be a mother. I didn’t want a husband but wanted kids. Many people told it couldn’t be done. I have proved them wrong. I have 2 beautiful kids. And no husband!! We love the Barbie movies too!!

  17. My dream as a child was to go to Disneyworld with Mickey Mouse and his friends. I would ask Mum and Dad everyday if we could drive there. Mum use to reply it’s way too far to drive there. I always replied its ok I will be good on the long drive. I promise 🙂 Still havn’t lived my childhood dream. Maybe one day if I count on my lucky stars x

  18. I always dreamt I’d find the perfect husband for my Mum. He would be kind and rich ( so she didn’t have to work three jobs). He would be mates with my brother and I but not fatherly ( we already had a Dad). I have not given up this dream, thirty years on.

  19. My dream as a kid was to be a vet, have a couple of kids, marry a cream cable sweater wearing guy, in glasses and live in a cute house near the zoo, Taronga Zoo that is. Huh I didn’t half dream big residentially but as a kid I just wanted to live near those animals…the houses weren’t bad either!

  20. I wanted to get married to prince charming and have the same dress as my barbie has, to this day i still want that dress 🙂

  21. My dream from about age five was to be either a vet or, if I didn’t get into vet science at uni, to be a writer. I thought I’d write books like Enid Blyton, ensuring that there were at least some animals amongst my characters. When I got to uni, I got myself a boyfriend and so the straight As I needed to get into vet after first year eluded me. I actually ended up spending a lot of my career working in public relations at CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory – which was writing about animals – just not in the way I’d expected!

  22. I just assumed that I would frow up to be a very famous artist, alas that has not happened. But I have been even luckier and have a beautiful daughter that loves art too!!!

  23. Mine was a Barbie car – my kids laugh their heads off when I tell them my Barbie used to drive around in my shoe!

  24. I had a very clear idea of what I was going to do when I grew up, my dream was to get married at 23, have a yellow car and have three kids!!

Funny about that I didn’t get married till I was 29, I have owned a green, purple and silver car, never a yellow one, and I have two fabulous kids, who both love Barbie!! We have watched Barbie Mermaid Tale and The Princess and the Pop star more times than I can remember!! Thanks Chantelle x

  25. My friend next door and I would play under her house in our ‘cubby’ and we had a jar that we would put money into. This was our travel money for travelling the world. We were so excited and would talk about all the places we wanted to visit and the adventures we would have!

  26. When I was little I always wanted to be the first female PM of Australia – Damn you Julia!!! My family lived in Canberra and I thought the lodge looked like a nice place to live and parliament house would have been an awesome place to work, especially with those big green hills to roll down everyday 🙂

  27. To have a boyfriend! When I was little, this was the ultimate accessory, the ‘thing’ to take to the zoo & walk holding hands, the one to buy me popcorn at the movies (when I was old enough to go by myself), to bring me flowers like Dad did for Mum. Even at such a young age, I was a romantic at heart 😉

  28. Running away to join the circus sounds cliché, but I really did dream of performing on the high trapeze, or walking the tightrope to stunned gasps of admiration! I used to walk over the very top bar of the monkey bars(yes, the VERY top of the monkey bars, which was NOT for climbing on!), spinning and twirling… and I NEVER fell off! These days, I trip over my own feet constantly! Perhaps the reason my balance was so much better as a child, was the belief I had back then that I really could do ANYTHING… I wish I could find that same self-belief now!

  29. I dreamt of being a mum. Yeah, yeah, laugh all you want, but when I look back, it’s really the only thing that was constant. I was super smart at maths and science at a time that schools really encouraged girls to go into science/engineering at uni, so I did…and while I enjoyed it, it never felt fulfilling. Now that I have two little girls, I feel like I’m doing what I’ve always been born to do.
Well, that, and having a Ken doll. I don’t know why we never had one when I was a child!

  30. I was never terribly ambitious… but I always wanted to have six kids. I got halfway there and that’s probably it. I love spending girly time with my daughter and even manage to watch most of the movies she enjoys… thank goodness we gave up Dora a while ago, Barbie is much less grating on the ears. *lol* She’ll go nuts for this movie as she’s doing ballet twice a week and loving it.

  31. I wanted to be a cartoonist for Disney! I was always good at drawing and art and I started out drawing Disney characters.

  32. To climb the biggest tree in our area. Unfortunately I made it half way up the tree and slipped and hung with ankle stuck until the long ladder from my dad helped save me. I never tried again 🙁

  33. I wanted to be a lawyer when I was a kid, mum said I would be good at it because I liked to argue lol Though it was not to be theres not many arguments I lose, ask anyone…except my husband.

  34. I wanted to be in charge of the F1 cars and be a F1 team manager. The Power, speed and glamour. I wanted it all. Instead I am now in charge of a demanding three year old and his toy car!

  35. I’ve always wanted to be a professional wrestler. At the rate I’m going I’ll be a sumo wrestler soon :p

  36. My dream was to own my own house; the type of house that I would see when I went along with my mum to her house-cleaning jobs, and also to be able to afford to by the same for her too.

  37. From the age of 4, I decided I was going to be a Mummy. I was going to have 4 children, (2 girls and 2 boys of course!) and I was going to name them Emma, Claire, Luke and Daniel!

I then dreamed about my life. I would be married at 23, first baby at 25 and I would be a nurse until I was a stay at home Mummy.

That was my dream. That dreamed never changed. Even as a teen I would lay in bed at night dreaming of this grand wonderful life I had planned. My family laughed!

    I became a nurse.

I was married 2 days after I tured 24 (oh so close to 23!)

I had my first baby at 25

Her name is Emma Claire ( Ok so the dream never included a husband that cared about the baby’s names!!)

I then went onto have another daughter and then 2 sons. (again the names were not quite as planned, but I achieved my 2 of each)

I am a full time stay at home Mum.

I am certainly a believer that dreams do come true!

  38. In Grade Four, we had to do a speech on what our ‘dream job’ was – I talked about how I wanted to be a librarian. Thirty five years later, I have finally just graduated from Information and Library Studies at Curtin Uni…yay!

  39. I remember being little and seeing Rhonda Burchmore in Hot shoe shuffle the musical and saying to everyone i want to sing and dance like her and be a star!

  40. My dream was to be a mum and a flight attendant i am a mum to 4 beautiful babes but only got on a plane for the first time a couple of years ago it was fantastic!

  41. I wanted to be just like my mum and be a NURSE and help sick people, now I am an office worker so I didn’t follow my dreams. My daughter wants to be a ZOO KEEPER so I will support her dreams to till the end.

  42. I wanted to travel the world and live a life full of adventure! I’m half way there now 🙂

  43. To have a rich boyfriend and own a cafe, with no kids!
HAHA! Lets just say theres no rich boyfriend, no cafe and 3 kids!
where did I go wrong!? lol

  44. When I was little I always dreamt of being a flight attendant and travelling the world, I would always ask my mum and dad if they could take us for a ride on the plane….lol I had no idea back then, always thought you could buy the tickets as easy as train or bus tickets…lol Mum would take me out to the airport so I could see the plane take off, thats about as close I got, but that was ok. 🙂

  45. My cousins and I always dreamed of living together on a farm where we had separate houses but lots of time together to play. We always thought we’d have a pool, horses, motor bikes and a skateboard ramp. Funny how we never thought we would be apart. It was always us together.
