Kitchen by Mike

There’s a new cafe in town. Well, not really in my town, but close enough. On Thursday I popped over for a green tea with a friend at Kitchen by Mike and loved it so much headed back again on Saturday. You know when something is so good you have to share it with someone else?

Kitchen by Mike is a huge space for a cafe. Huge. So much so that you’ll never have to tuck your chair in so people can get to their table. You won’t even be able to hear others munching on their {sourdough} toast next to you. It’s so big that it feels like it belongs somewhere in the country. But it’s not too big that it lacks warmth and character. It has those in bundles.

The space is shared between Mike and his kitchen and designer store Koskela (filled to the brim with all things Australian made including castle and things}. There are more spaces too that seem like they’ll evolve over time.

Having been there before, it was fun to watch people’s reactions over the weekend as they walked in and as they ate. Everyone has wandering eyes, and not on the beautiful people {although there were some of those too} but at the innovative space. It’s back to basics, soothing in it’s raw form.

The menu was simple when I went on Saturday. Just two things on the menu that change each day. I had baked beans with bacon on toast, Lacey had eggy bread with lemon curd. Ma had a bacon buddy, a breakfast staple. Sadly I’d promised Lacey pancakes but they were on Sunday’s menu. The eggy bread was delectable, my baked beans were more of a man’s meal but still scrumptious.

Head over for a sticky beak and a bite to eat: 85 Dunning St, Rosebery NSW

  1. I just wanted you to know I found your blog a couple weeks ago and put you on my side bar.. I love how fun and energetic it feels..keep up the great work.. and people who copy SUCK !!!!

  2. I love the look of this place, partly because it looks so raw and rustic but mainly because it's so spacious! I generally choose not to dine at cafés because they're so small and cramped!

  3. I love the rustic look of this place. And even though it is so big, they still have quaint little places for seating. It does have the “down home” feel, right up to their menu. GREAT PLACE. Wish I could visit there.

  4. I love the rustic look – my living room looks similar (not in a good way though, Ive got no plaster on the walls due to a leaking chimney) the joys of house renovating! Jules x

  5. Aaarrghhh… this is making me peckish… and giving me an urge to buy something lovely for the kitchen… but tragically it's almost 9pm and I'm 'helping' son with English assignment which is the EXACT OPPOSITE of being out at a groovy cafe!!

  6. We have an awesome place like this in Prahran (Vic) called Hobba. The food is amazing, the coffee the best and the space, the SPACE! My mothers group go every week and we can fit eight prams.

Love a well thought out cafe.
