Confessions Of A Cheapskate.

I

have a confession to make. My excessive magazine obsession has saved me hundreds in cosmetic costs. How? I haven’t purchased foundation in over 8 years. I haven’t needed to. You see, I’m a cheapskate. I have enough of these sachets found glued to pages of magazines* I pore over to last me a while. A long while.

It’s not something I’ve done with intention. I did buy foundation. A good Lancome one a long time ago. And then I worked my way to the bottom of it, and found myself in a bit of a predicament with nothing to use. I remembered a sachet I had in a magazine, and I used it. I never looked back.
Sometimes I score big {usually in the pricey international magazines} and get a brand like Sisley. Lucky my skin colour is pretty average and the colour match has been not too bad.
I know, I know… I can hear the girls at Primped tsking from here. Forgive me make-up gods, for I have sinned… but I sure have saved myself a pretty penny.
What’s your confession? What cheapskate act have you been guilty of lately? How do you save yourself a pretty penny?

*I promise you that I buy perfume {or at least have it gifted to me}, I don’t rub myself up and down magazines just to smell good.

  1. Hmm.. well, I'm too much of a cheapskate to actually buy magazines, butI do steal the perfume strips from beauty counter testers and put them in my undie drawer for free scented scanties!!
And junk mail, flyers etc. become my 3 yr olds 'mail' for her to practise cutting, tearing, drawing etc on.

  2. My husband travels regularly for work, so I haven't bought soap in years. We have a fab stash of little hotel soaps.

When I worked in mags I didn't buy any make up at all for about 10 years. We got so many freebies. I resent buying it now.

  3. hehe, you make me laugh re the perfume, they just don't give off a good enough dose do they?!

you know what i do, and have since my daughter was born, and that's reuse wrapping paper and postage packs. there, i said it! =P

  4. Cheapskate confession: one day when I ran out of expensive facial moisturiser (was a Dermalogica girl through and through) I used my body lotion – cheap Cetaphil $11.95 for a massive pump pack – instead. That day was four years ago and I have never bought facial moisturiser again. I love my Cetaphil. If you have dry skin, try it.

  5. That is so funny Chantelle! I've done the same thing in a pinch when I've run out of shampoo and conditioner, it was a free sample and didn't go very far but it saved me from looking like the Wreck of the Hesperus!

  6. I always live off the samples I get from the Easter Show showbags. I think at last count I have about 8 eye liners and 4 bars of soap from this years Easter Show in my bathroom vanity, and countless sachets of moisturisers and foundations.. I rarely use makeup so its good having them there in case I need it!

  7. I do the exact same thing with magazine foundation samples! And I was using a mascara that came free with a mag for ages, till Lady Smaggle told me off and advised I needed to buy a proper mascara! (It was actually because she was doing my make up for my wedding and she refused to use my sample mascara. fair enough!)

  8. I wonder if you might like to venture an opinion about what was the best?

None of those sachets ever work for me as I'm ridiculously pale. Perhaps I should save them and send them to you. 😉

  9. VIVID images of you & a Marie Claire come to mind….lol….I totally admit to doing the exact same thing……no, not with Marie Claire just the fondation! Anna x

  10. oh that is so funny! I'm a clinique girl myself and have never changed brands since I was in high school which is pretty sad

And while I spend money on my makeup and hair things I actually use dove cleanser and moisturiser, purchased at the supermarket for my skin. Works a treat and actually is the best moisturiser ever. Clinique just isn't enough moisture and expensive brands, are well, expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Corrie;)

  11. Thats great! lucky for you, you have a great skin tone to match the samples.. im quite the opposite
things glued into my mags annoy the hell out of me..the first thing i do when i get my mags is to go through them and i throw anything thats glued in away!
my mum however likes to try everything, so if shes here on holidays shes first in line to grab them before they reach the bin..

  12. i collect samples too – aesop give out great ones when you buy something, and i take them out of magazines too. the foundation ones are great for keeping in my handbag for emergencies, and all the body/wash moisturisers etc for the gym and travelling!
