All my friends are getting…

…fit.

Have you noticed?

Everyone, everywhere, is getting fit and healthy? It’s running rife on Facebook, and like a virus effecting all my friends. Just this weekend one mate climbed a mountain {for fun}, others jogged with friends and another announced how many calories she burned in a gym session. In the past 6 months there have been marathons run, body transformations taken place and healthier lives being led.

Facebook used to be all about wild nights out. And then babies. Lots and lots of babies. But now, it’s all about getting fit.

Last night I asked Hubby if his friends were doing the same, “Are they all writing about getting fit?”

Wrong person to ask. His mate won a gold medal at the London Olympics. Of course they are.

Do me a favour. Head over to your Facebook and check the news feed. Do you have fit friends too?

So this morning I decided if I can’t beat ’em, I’ll join them.

When’s the last time you exercised? Did you post about it on Facebook?

  1. Having lost 50kg over the past 18 months, I sort of inspired a lot of my friends to get fit too… so they post regular updates, as do I. LOL It think it comes and goes in waves though, particularly as the seasons change.

  2. For the past 10 years I have walked 2 hours a morning, 6 days a week..I’d sure hate to see what I’d look like if I hadn’t done this…in other words I’m not all that fit! But it is a very important part of my day especially when we travel. I find this a wonderful way to meet new cities!! I got RunKeeper on my iPhone recently and I created a goal August 27. I WILL walk 180 miles by Sept. 25!!!

  3. I have not been exercising like I used to just a few months ago. Stinks, because I can tell the difference in how I feel overall from a good workout. I did make the decision to change my eating habits and that is making a dent, but I know it is time to get the workout back on. I don’t post about it all that often on Facebook. I will usually share foods that are good and healthy.

  4. I plan to take a walk with bubs in the pram to the post box to post thank you cards and vaccum the house – count that as exercise :o)

  5. I’ve been training to run the Melbourne marathon for the last 9 months or so (5 weeks and counting until D day) and have fallen in love with weight training in the process of making my body strong enough to do it…so, I excercise most days, sometimes twice…I think that my friends would have unfriended me by now if I posted about it all the time. I do blog about it though 🙂 I know exactly what you mean, there are so many new pages and sites dedicated to healthy food and fitness xx

      • Wow 🙂 thankyou xx …I love hearing that something I have posted has been inspiring for someone else. When I do post about fitness that’s how I want to be seen, not like I’m jamming it down people’s throats or big noting myself iykwim? I’ve worked REALLY hard to be where I am at right now and I am super proud of myself but I also love love that it feels natural and it’s just my lifestyle now, not something out of the ordinary 🙂

  6. Hahahaha…. sorry mine are all talking about their kids firsts at college and football because the season has begun here which means fall is on it’s way!!!!! And, while I may be joining in on the football frenzy, thankfully I won’t be talking about college firsts for five more years yet.

  7. Oh dear, oh my… this had to be the post I woke up to, didn’t it? Haha… was all planned and ready last night to go jogging this morning… I slept in. I realized just how early 6am is and how snuggly my bed is… I’ve been trying to get back into my jogging habit, after life got in the way, and it’s been a bit tricky… am I lost cause? No… I’ll just get hubby to kick me out of bed tomorrow 😉 Do I post it on facebook? Nooo… I’ve got nothing to brag about! xx

    • That’s the hardest bit, isn’t it? Getting out of bed and out the door. Worth it though. That’s what I’m telling myself anyway.

  8. this post is funny because i totally did an exercise post on facebook yesterday. i thought i was running 10 miles yesterday and about 2 miles in, someone informed me we were going 15. i wanted to die. it was totally facebook worthy and instagrammable.

  9. it is a rare thing when I post about exercising on facebook. I mostly post about food and being out and about. I probably should balance my posts more….

  10. I still have plenty of friends doing the baby thing, and a couple who are getting fit. I’m getting fit too! I am so tired of making excuses of why I haven’t achieved my goal weight or increased my health and fitness. So, with no excuses left, I am participating in a 10 week challenge at my gym. It starts this Saturday and I couldn’t be more excited to see what I am capable of. And yes, I will be posting about it on Facebook 🙂

  11. I’ve just started to get back into getting fit so far I’ve done an hour a day for the last fortnight and I really am feeling much better and thankfully a bit lighter too… And yes I posted about it on Facebook to keep myself accountable!

  12. I’ve joined up Michelle Bridges’ 12 week body transformation program. Week 1 was splendid. And then middle of Week 2, I fell sick. But yeah, trying to get fitter, lose those last few kilos and get healthy. Once I get rid of my current fluey symptoms!

  13. yep, guilty, I did the get fit thing back in 2010 and love that so many of my FB buddies and or are doing the same.

And yes, I post about it all the time on FB, probably drive my friends list batty with it 😉

  14. All. The. Freakin. Time. Haha. I work out with the siblings {and cousin} 3-5 times a week. It’s all kinds of wonderful and has changed my whole outlook on life. Believe me, I used to laugh SO hard when people said that. Haha. Can’t beat them, join them for sure.

Love your shoes and your wee puppy. CUTE!

  15. I never exercise which is really bad I know, but hard to summon up the energy after chasing after two kids all day. I have however decided to go gluten free and sugar free for two weeks and it’s killing me!

  16. I signed up to Michelle Bridges 12WBT a couple of weeks ago. I figured I need to actually DO something – I’m 40kg overweight and this eating/fitness program takes all of the guess work out of weight loss. I don’t talk about it much on FB. It’s a very personal journey for me.

  17. I used to go to the gym all the time for the past year, but then I was in a car accident in June and have been having physio ever since because my muscles just dont want to work properly. I am just starting to get back into lifting some light weights now and I feel great. Exercising really helps to clear your mind and make you feel good about yourself not just making you fit. Listening to music at the same time makes it heaps more fun too, then it doesnt feel like a chore. I am guilty of posting on facebook about it at times, but I have heaps of friends who are way more obsessed and post every single time they do any form of exercise (that gets annoying).

  18. I try to keep it newsworthy – ie I don’t just check in at the gym. But I have lost about 33kg this year, am 1/2 way through the journey and the support of my FB community has helped to keep the motivation up, and helped me get back in contact with some old friends who now want to do hill walks and exercise with me.

  19. Yup, i’m guilty. But I’ve noticed that when I post about getting fit and posting about how much weight i’m losing or inches i’ve lost, my friends are encouraged and jump on the ban wagon. I think because I’m the last person in the world that would be exercising, so they think If she could do it then so can i 🙂

  20. Good for you! I’ve just spent two weeks at a wonderful health retreat and now I am inspired to get fitter too. What are you doing to get fit?

    • I’ve been walking of a morning on my own, and then going to the beach and walking in the sand there again.

Yoga is my next thing. It’s on my to-do list. Which health retreat did you go to? That’d be a dream come true!

      • Oh sand is walking is great for toning. Lucky you, living near the beach. I went to NuYu Total Health at Kingscliff. Wonderful place and wonderful people, I think they’re miracle workers!! 50 kgs lost so far, and counting 🙂 I think you’ve inspired me to walk my dog now…

        • Ah, I know NuYu. When I stayed at Mantra in March a group were using it as the NuYu retreat (or at least I think they were. I saw them eating and exercising there). I’m so proud of you. 50kg is kickass! Go you. x

  21. Heck yeah I post it on FB. I post everything on FB. I’m one of THOSE type of Facebook people and not ashamed of it. Facebook keeps me accountable. I lost 6o lbs about three years ago and have managed to keep it all off. I like to think that maybe all my posting can help someone else get motivated. I post about working out at the gym, in my own living room, going for a quick walk around the block, or doing a 5k. Just whatever to keep moving.

  22. whoops, i just posted an exercise related thing on fb yesterday! it was the #fmsphotoaday for “something i do most weekends” and yep, i posted a pic of my runners, as most sunday mornings i go for a run 🙂

  23. It is here and there on FB for me. I run and do the gym 6 days a week but don’t post it. I figure people would be annoyed by it. I have an app that posts my long runs on FB. My last one was 10 miles. Honestly I think no one cares to see my workouts. So I don’t really bother. When I started running and doing the gym a lot and hard it made my depression go away and made me feel so good. And that is what matters to me. I say give it a try Chantelle! Love all your posts and photos. Photo a day brings me so much joy! Thanks, Stacy

  24. I agree – my husband lost 60 pounds last fall and it’s contagious. All our friends seem to be getting fitter. I even started running and I never ran before. Weird but cool.

  25. Oh TOTALLY!! I love it! its very motivating for me as I have lots of weight to loose! I can only just start to move after problems in my pregnancy and it makes me move a bit more!!! GREAT POST Lovely lady! I off to take the kids for a walk to the beach!

  26. Love this, Chantelle!! Like a boss! The walking is great for both you & the dog. Do you have Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer on tv in Australia? He’s big into walking the dog for lowering all the extra energy dogs have in our non-agricultural lives. When done right, the dog will learn submission to YOU.
And there’s the health benefits, of course. 😉

  27. bahahaha *like a boss*
I think exercising is contagious. I ran my first half marathon last year because my friends were and they promised bubbles at the end of it! Then I did it again this year, because I didn’t want to get left out and even more friends and our kids joined in to do either the half marathon or the 10km or 5km options. It is so great how inspired our kids get to want to join in and be part of the achievement. We’ve got the city to bay in Adelaide this weekend and again there is a big group of my friends and their kids taking part.

  28. I’ve just launched a new online fitness program called CrashFit, because I HAVEN’T been doing any exercise and I wanted an easy way to start moving again. It’s all about doing easy exercises during the ad breaks of your favourite TV prog! And it’s live on FB on Monday nights, so yes, I and hopefully lots of others will be posting about getting fit on FB!!!!

However, I now want to get a dog so I can walk it like a boss too! So cute 🙂

  29. I ran today…after an embarrassing hiatus. I *do* post my runs on facebook… and I like to think I’ve inspired a few. Hopefully.

  30. This is sooo funny. Perfectly timed really. I had noticed a massive increased lately of ‘fit friends’ on facebook and it encouraged me to get my butt on the cross trainer this morning for the first time in months. Plus I parked further away at the shops this morning, loaded the kids in the pram and walked a couple of extra blocks, just because… Maybe its the weather??

  31. I’ve spent the last year getting fit. Lost 17.5kgs in 13 months and are 2.5kgs off my goal weight. Last time I exercised was this morning when went for an hours walk with a friend before going to work. No I dont usually post about it on FB 🙂

  32. I like team sports or ones like golf where you make a committment to others to turn up. I’m not so good at planning to go for a walk or run. But I do feel I want to be fitter!

  33. Yep, I am one of those annoying ones always posting my runs on facebook. I don’t post my 2x personal training sessions a week on there though. And I find it sort of helps keep me accountable. If I am telling people I’m doing all this stuff then by gosh I better get out and do it. It’s been 6 months and I’m down about 7kgs, so it’s been slow and steady. Some people comment/like my running activities, no one has ever commented anything negative, I figure they can just ignore it if they don’t want to see it. I’ve had people commenting on pictures telling me I look great and have inspired/motivated them, so I think that makes it worth posting (and now I’m off to eat my fried dim sims…oops, that won’t be going on facebook!!)

  34. Lol, I’ve noticed this too, but I was already doing it before the trend hit. I lost over 60kgs and have been working on my fitness since I began to drop the weight. I think it’s a great trend. Being fit just makes your life better. 😉

      • No, not really. I had a lot of problems with my gallbladder, had it removed and found a lot of foods still made me sick. I did reduce serving sizes, wrote everything down and did some kind of exercise. The weight fell off me. Even though I’ve weighed the same for the last 18 months I am still smaller than this time last year because of building muscle and losing fat. You can do it, too. 😉

  35. Oh yeah all my freinds are on the bandwagoon too… I keep trying to hop on but I keep failing…. ahhhh I’ll be fully qualified when the lazy craze hits…

  36. I am on a Ketogenic Diet, and I enjoy yoga and walks at the beach (this is clearly an ad for the ‘personals’ page), full on fitness I’m not really into, but being fitter and feeling healthier feels great!!

  37. Oh how I would love to have the ability to exercise as I used to. I love being fit and in good shape. Able to have control of something, if only my body, in this crazy world we live in.
And yes, on the days that I do make it out the door, that I do successfully walk 3-4 miles, I do post it with my gps pedometer iPhone app.

  38. Uuummm yes im one of the fit ones too:)

And yes i post them on FB and Instagram.

I go to Body Pump Classes with my hubby 2x a week, they are our *date nights*

I also run at least once a week for about 8km. Im slowly building up speed and we also do strength training.

I love having muscle definition and feeling fabulous! It allows me to eat that chocolate when i feel like it:) Im looking at starting more weight lifting for body shaping, hence all the body building links and likes i have on FB.

Ps I giggled out loud when you said that you took Bronte for a walk…..like a boss:)

  39. I wasn’t allowed to exercise for about a month because of a small surgery, but am now getting back into my weekly fit routine – gym twice a week and a long walk in the weekends when ever I can make the time for it. It’s not much, but it’s the balance where I still enjoy what I do.. I used to do pilates, and loved it, but as I prefer to exercise immediately after work (get the work stuff out of my head by working out), the evening classes are often a miss for me. I sometimes share on fb when I check in at my gym or other sporty places, but not very often.

      • I had something removed from my arm, and the cut had to be made a bit deeper than first thought necessary. So no weight lifting and no streching for a month, no sweating and so on.. The under-skin stiches are still quite tight and it hurts sometimes to lift something heavy, but otherwise I’m very well healed and allowed to do everything normal again. thank you 🙂

  40. It’s Spring and the fitness bug has bitten.. That and the post Olympics guilt trip:) so good to see though isn’t it? After a surgery a few weeks ago I have been itching to get back out there, I miss it so much and feel out of wack! X

  41. Last time I exercised was this morning – pilates. I have another workout scheduled for this evening as well. I’m a competitive ballroom dancer, so I have to stay in shape. Plus, I enjoy working out.

  42. yes..I have been running for years but now I have noticed that others are sharing there workout post so I do too. It is really nice to have your friends cheer you on when it comes to your mission to get healthy..Its also really cool to let all your friends know you are racing and having them all cheer you on..

  43. One of my friends just wrote that she walked 13 miles (Sunday morning) !3 MILES! Holy walking mama….If she wasn’t a very good friend I would have been doubted. This morning when I slowly trudged my around 1 mile walk..I had to keep reminding myself not to think about her 13 miles and do my very lame best.

  44. Oh completely. In fact, I am a member of a FB group that has been set up to encourage/motivate with the exercising. It’s the weather… it’s nicer being outside in the sunshine!

  45. YES! I have noticed! Must be Spring. I’m getting fit, too, but in thought only. Now just have to make it reality. Groan.

  46. My friends and I have a group on Facebook to motivate each others. The name is “You go girl!” 🙂 Greetings from the other side of the world… Puerto Rico.
PD: When you are going to have lunch, I’m going to sleep. Good night. LOL

  47. Great post. But honestly, I am not that exercise junkie on a regular basis. I do exercise as and when – yeah! not very good, I know. But if you consider running up and down the stairs of my house more than four times daily as a form of exercise, then yes, I do. And I don’t announce my weight loss on FB either. I just shout it out to hubby and daughter. Right now they are keeping track of my progress.
