A vanilla kind of life

If there’s something that brings the memories flooding back in from childhood, it’s stepping inside an ice cream store. I don’t remember going often, but there was one ice cream shop, an hour from where we lived that was worth the drive {and remember as a kid, an hour is forever!}.

At around 6 years old my flavour of choice was bubblegum, the brightest coloured ice cream in the cabinet.

From ten years and beyond I searched for the most decadent chocolate ice cream I could find. Death by chocolate, chocolate on chocolate, triple chocolate… one could never have enough chocolate in my eyes.

Every time we’d visit, each of us four kids would place our orders of brightly coloured, decadent flavours and my Ma would finish the order with a request for a single cone with a small scoop of vanilla.

“Vanilla?” we’d always pester her.

Of all those colours, and flavours we couldn’t believe that Ma would choose something so particularly boring. It was what she wanted though, and what she always ordered, despite our disappointment in her choice. It seemed like such a waste.

A few weeks back, on our way back to Sydney after visiting our home town, we stopped at our ice cream shop for a sneaky ice cream for the drive home. As always my Ma asked for her single serve of vanilla, and I browsed the varieties.

For once the chocolate on chocolate ice creams looked too decadent, and I started to set my eyes on a hokey pokey flavour, and put my order in.

I only noticed as we were driving home, with almost identical ice creams in our hands, that I’d matured into a hokey pokey life, and for once wasn’t holding a chocolate ice cream in my hands. I laughed as we drove along, and suggested to my Ma that perhaps I was turning into her. Unsure if my choice in ice cream was symbolic or not, I wondered if I was heading for a vanilla kind of life now that I was a Mum myself.

This ice cream site assures me that vanilla lovers are not boring, but actually colourful dramatic risk takers, while chocolate-lovers are dramatic and the life of the party.

What’s your favourite flavour ice cream? What do you think it says about you?

  1. Without looking at that site I am going to tell you that my fave has always been Mint Choc Chip….

My childrens greatest thrill is the gelati counter. They drool before a meal, during, and after…

    xx

  2. As a child I loved it when my Mum would let me have Rum & Raisin, then as a teenager, we discovered a small local ice cream maker that did the most fantastic toffee, with lovely chunks of toffee in it. Now as an grown up, I seem to have lost my love of ice-cream, but I truly adore lemon sorbet – the more tang the better!

  3. When I was a kid MY flavour was mint choc chip (especially from New Zealand Icecream on Manly corso). My parent didn't even need to ask.

Now that Ben & Jerrys have come to town I have turned into a choc-a-holic in my 20s, when it comes to ice cream. With caramel and marshmallow swirls, or peanut butter, or coffee chunks… Actually I think I need some right now.

  4. You know my favourite is mint and the description on that site actually matches me pretty well. Raya loves the bright coloured ice cream as well and I suspect she has worked out that if she points to crazy coloured ones she gets lots of little tastes first before she finally chooses vanilla – cheeky chop

  5. My favourite is actually a gelato flavour. I can never pass on a pistachio gelato, I adore that and vanilla bean….ohh major cravings now!! 🙂

  6. I'm terrible when it comes to ice cream!
I love Cold Rock and all the trimmings! I usually get chocolate brownie and cookie dough mixed in with mine.
When I was in the UK I was addicted to Ben and Jerry's Half Baked Cookie Dough (which you can't get here, GRRR!).
I highly doubt I will ever be a plain vanilla lover.

  7. For as long as I can remember I've loved to have a scoop of lemon sorbet and a scoop of chocolate. Oh so good. My other fav would be the baci/choc-hazelnut. yummo

  8. sorry but i'm a vanilla chooser! much to my partners disapointment, he always gets me to try what he has which is usually cookie dough or something naughty but a taste is usually enough for me and i go back to good old vanilla, although i could eat a bucket of rainbow icecream if no one was watching LOL

  9. Mint choc chip is my all time favourite… However in the past two years I've found myself choosing vanilla over richer flavours when we go out for icecream. I don't think vanilla is given enough credit – it's delicious!

  10. This post is SO freaky. I was only *just* thinking the other day, about how much my taste in icecream has changed over the years. And guess what?? I am a vanilla girl now too! I even said to myself as I selected the Bulla country cream vanilla from the freezer in the supermarket, “getting a little boring in your old age eh?!” hehe!
My fave as a kid was also bubblegum! Darrell Lea did a mean bubblegum flavour back in the day when they served icecream… I think it was like a bright green colour… ewww! I then moved on to mint choc chip, where I stayed for many years.
Now I love hokey pokey also and a divine flavour I tried recently… coconut.
The girl loves her icecream ;o)

  11. Ooooh, choc chip or cookies and cream! Although, there are those times when the chocolate is just all too sickly, so I opt for good ol' vanilla.
Think I might head for the freezer…

  12. I'm a “pick a different flavor everytime I go” kind of gal!

I had to laugh at this post though becuase hubby's a vanilla guy and although I do enjoy vanilla, (it IS still ice cream after all) I can't understand for the life of me why he picks it EVERY time. One of these days he's going to surprise me…I just know he is!

  13. My mom's favorite is vanilla. I think. It was the last time I checked!
I myself love chocolate! AND strawberry! I really love cookie dough too. I wish there was a chocolate cookie dough! That would be the best!
